Diary of a WIMPy Particle! Are we about to write page 1 in a new chapter of Scientific Discovery? Daniel Akerib, a physicist on the LZ experiment, talks it through with Sean Carroll on Mindscape: open.spotify.com/episode/4k7M... And my follow up after listening:

Calling all TEACHERS & EDUCATORS - I've just added a new tool to the website. I know it’s working fine for my needs at the now, but I would really appreciate some feedback from any teachers out there who have a moment to check it out. Please suggest ANY ways you think I might improve it.. 🙏🙏🙏

Super busy week with work and site updates, but always worth it! The live archive now has 102 feeds from almost every slight curve of the globe..🌍 The one Below is the world's longest running experiment. Wouldn't it be a bummer if it dripped before you clicked..😂 Have an awesome weekend everyone!

Bill Nye The Science Guy - Energy⚡⚡⚡ I've completely revised my remastering techniques for all my episodes from now on, so I hope I'm doing these shows even more justice now. Thanks for all the feedback folks, it only helps me get better.

seriouslyscientific.comBill Nye Energy: Full Episode, Questions and LessonThe science of energy: how stored (potential) energy turns into motion (kinetic) energy, why energy is never destroyed, and how the world converts wind, water, coal and sunlight into electricity.

For anyone curious, this is the timeline. Each episode now gets three separate upscales with different settings. I isolate the different types of footage, use the version that suits each one, blend them within shots where needed, so spend a lot more time in post production before the final output.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Noooo It's the Sun, the Space Station AND a plane! ☀️🛰️✈️ What began as an ordinary afternoon chasing sunspots over Czechia turned into a one in 30 million capture, all lined up in a single split-second frame. Awesome! 📷 Petr Horálek / NASA APOD

Colony of Leopard Lacewing caterpillars (Cethosia cyane) feeding on a passionflower vine. Watch how they freeze the moment I tap the stem.. This is so predators focus on the warning colours instead of movement. Classic aposematism, backed up by toxins the caterpillars pull from the host plant.

Pupation happens away from the feeding group. The pupa mimics a curled dead leaf, but with metallic gold patches on the cuticle. These are not pigment or secretion, they are structural: stacked layers of chitin acting as a thin-film reflector, the same physics that makes peacock feathers iridescent.

There's a sundial on Mars and Bill Nye helped design it. His father spent nearly four years in a Japanese prison camp with no watches, so he learned to read time off shadows. New biography: the sundial, the engineering career and the Disney lawsuit he unfortunately lost. 🪐🕰️

I’m not sure anyone could get away with so many song parodies on network TV today 📺 But Bill Nye's Soundtracks of Science absolutely nailed it 🎯.. In December 1995, Bill turned his studio into the NTV Music Awards! Can you name all the original songs and artists? 🎶

Curiousity climbed the Mountain! This HiRISE pan and zoom finds the 'family car sized' Curiosity Rover climbing Mount Mercou in Gale Crater on Mars. From 269 km up, HiRISE resolves objects down to about a meter, enough to catch a whole rover as one bright dot. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/UArizona

Do you remember where you were on 11 August 1999 for the last total solar eclipse over Europe? 🌘 I do and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my entite life.. Even the scientist in me couldn't help but feel a little druidy as day turned to night and the troposphere froze. Yay Totality!

After some research the circumstantial evidence seems strong. Found in potted plants next to a coconut palm I'm growing here in Vietnam and the grub size fits. I hypothesise they're Oryctes rhinoceros, aka the coconut palm beetle - but with 39 species of Oryctes, there's only one way to find out.

I observed a pretty interesting survival tactic while I was preparing their new home. For the 20 minutes I was busy, they lay motionless on a ceramic plate in a defensive state known as thanatosis, aka playing dead. As soon as they sensed the soil, they were gone. Update in about 4 weeks I guess..

The Voyager probes have always had a special place in my heart 🛰️✨ They've been falling away from the Sun for almost as many years as I've been travelling around it.. 😉 And now Voyager 1 is about to reach one light day from Earth🌍 .. A place no machine has ever been, so I started the countdown⏱️👇👇
