Instagram’s “Friend Map” sounds like a fun way for friends to share their location. Unfortunately, Meta thinks your friends include Meta's own employees, advertisers, and cops. Here’s why & how to turn it off 🧵 1/5

🤭 I was waiting a long time for this! @watermapper.app is going global! Now you can search for #waterfountains anywhere in the #world. Super easy for when you are on a hike, holiday, or simply in unknown territories, and it is even all #free to download! #iOSDev #iOSapp #iOS #sideproject

Water Mapper is going global! 🌍

Right at the moment I also wanted to share ;) @dennissimeau.bsky.social and I built a new widget with train departure times for the #NSapp @ns.nl Check it out! apps.apple.com/nl/app/id370...

apps.apple.com‎Departures: from every Dutch station, always within reach.‎from every Dutch station, always within reach.

Start your 📱 app updates, because the brand new 🚆 Departures Widget is now live in the NS-app! Select your favorite Dutch station, and see all the departure times. You can at any time refresh the times by tapping the 🔄 in the top right corner! apps.apple.com/nl/app/ns/id...

Small milestone 🚀: OpenStreetMap access for the Netherlands. Yes, we removed PRO - no more purchases - full app for #free #WaterMapper #iOS #iOSDev

I don’t mind when #Apple #iOS will be named of based on the year. With that many versions it may become clear when it came out.

Yesterday I had a little sideproject with my #homeLab. I managed to get #Ollama working with #Google #Gemma3. All together with Open WebUI, and on my @unraid.net server!

Even though it is not that quick with a first gen #Intel #XeonScalable Here is what #Gemma thinks why it is cool:

I’m so surprised that not much native #iOS apps implement the ‘additionalSafeAreaInsets’ for major components. #iOSDev

The main issue I encounter is for example with navigationbars. Where any picture-in-picture element will simply overlaps the component.

It has been a while since I shared the last update of #WaterMapper, but here it is! 😁

Water Mapper@watermapper.app

Today we launched our greatest update yet! #WaterMapper went 2.0 with the long awaited location-validation!

Today I learned you never need to disconnect your iPhone from your Mac when the #Console.app is still running.

The reason behind: why make these elements native? Instead of representing the above as an image or so. Well my reason is quite straightforward: theming and configuration. Not only light vs dark mode, but think of animations and sizing.

A while ago I shared some of my findings with #MapKit when developing #WaterMapper. Gather I shared them on Twitter, so I want to port them to here.

But, if you need clustering, like I did, you’ll find out that you need to migrate (again). Even ‘back to’ #UIKit - it feels off.

Conclusion of the story, know what you are working with, and know what went before you. #SwiftUI is great, but not the best always.

The next step is the optimization of the interoperability between #UIKit and #SwiftUI’s state.

It still feels strange. First I build the Map using #SwiftUI’s #MapKit starting from iOS 16, then migrate to the new Map for iOS 17 users and up. This migration already opened up a lot of neat features and modifiers.

I came to the conclusion that #SwiftUI’s MapKit is not yet ready. When building out my app with the Clustering of annotations the limitations became clear. I switched to #UIKit’s MKMapView using a UIViewRepresentable and clustering is working amazing.

A work in progress. Validation statuses within the #WaterMapper app. Now you will have even more certainty that the water fountain is there!

For all the #Swift and #iOSDeveloper here. I did use Apple’s #TipKit here, which is available starting from #iOS17. It does most of the heavy lifting for you.

To take note, also to self, I did not use it as intended: to show the same ‘tip’ a limited amount of instances. I did want to use it as a dialog, activated by user input. With some fiddling around with UUIDs and ‘.id()’ in #SwiftUI I managed to get it working.

After what came to light with the browser extension called #Honey from #Paypal I immediately uninstalled it from all my devices.
