Our adoption center renovation reflects our commitment to creating a brighter future for animals. From catios for cats to sound-dampened spaces for dogs, every detail was thoughtfully designed to increase comfort and reduce stress while animals are in our care. 🥹💙

A community member found Sam tied up next to a sign that read free. They called Carlsbad PD, whose officers stayed by his side until our Humane Law team arrived. Sam is safe with us & looking for a home! Thank you to Carlsbad PD for looking out for our community, including the four-legged members!

Its #NationalVeterinaryTechnicianWeek & we want to share our appreciation for these extraordinary professionals & the compassionate care they provide to shelter pets. Our veterinary technicians play a crucial role in our ability to provide lifesaving medical care for thousands of animals each year!

After surviving the Pipeline Fire with burns to all 4 paws and life-threatening injuries this resilient bobcat is back in the wild! He arrived at our Ramona Wildlife Center with severe burns, a kidney injury & emaciation. For two months, our Project Wildlife team worked tirelessly to help him heal.

3-month-old Derry is recovering after being found with a zip tie around his mouth and neck causing injuries to his mouth and neck. Despite the cruelty he endured Derry has been nothing but sweet and loving with his caregivers. Best of all he was adopted by a member of our Humane Law Enforcement team

Masked, mischievous and MARVELOUS — raccoons have got us seeing hearts around here! So friends, please take a moment — just a quick pause — to revel in the glory of these adorable critters!

When this little guy arrived at our Ramona Wildlife Center, he was furless and covered in painful scabs caused by severe mange. But thanks to two months of care from our Project Wildlife team, he’s gone from barely looking like a coyote to looking like the fluffy little canid he was meant to be!

Watch out Beyonce, Sugar and her vocals are coming for your career 👀 We wouldn't be surprised if Universal Music Group comes knocking on our doors to sign her — that vocal range is quite impeccable.

We’re thrilled to share that 323 animals found loving homes during our #ClearTheShelters event! Congratulations to all the people and pets beginning their new lives together. Thank you to everyone who welcomed a new family member!

You won’t want to miss this… adoption fees will be waived for every adoptable pet this Saturday, Aug. 29 and we’re calling on YOU to help us Clear the Shelters! With more than 750 pets available for adoption (like Miami here), we’re ready to help you find your perfect match!

It’s Black Cat Appreciation Day, so naturally, we have a few things to say about these fabulous felines.   (Also known as mini voids, little shadows and tiny household panthers, these fabulous felines are basically impossible not to love.)

Sol is proof that our fosters are remarkably multi-faceted! Take Sol’s foster, for example, who clearly moonlights as a photographer in their spare time! They recently snapped a few too-cute-not-to-share photos & we’re not exaggerating when we say these might be the cutest photos we’ve seen all year

A year ago, Haze arrived at our shelter under heartbreaking circumstances. Her owner Ana was in a car accident and fell into a coma, separating them. But a year, Ana was browsing our website when a familiar face stopped her in her tracks. It was Haze! She reached out they were reunited!

SDHS alum Levi celebrated his first Gotcha Day! His adopter shares: "We celebrated Levi's Gotcha Day. Bringing him home has been one of the greatest blessings & one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. He’s filled my life with so much love, laughter & happiness and I can’t imagine life without him"

Congratulations to the Class of 2026... the raccoon class, that is! These three orphaned raccoons are the very first graduates of the new raccoon nursery at our Ramona Wildlife Center! They were released together where they can continue life as wild raccoons, just as they were meant to.

When you find five young lodgepole chipmunks in your camper van, it comes as quite the surprise! After discovering these tiny passengers and not finding a parent nearby, a community member brought them to us for care.

Opossums are one of the most beneficial yet misunderstood animals in our communities. Despite a common misconception, it's extremely rare for them to carry rabies due to their naturally low body temperature. They also act as nature's cleanup crew feeding on insects, carrion and ticks!

When a snowy plover was found with a wound on their leg they were brought to us for care. Our wildlife vets performed radiographs to assess the injury. Luckily there were no signs of infection so we began pain medication & gave them a safe place to recover. After 17 days they were released back home

Open your home to a shelter pet & they'll change your life. Before you know it they've worked their way into your heart & become a beloved family member. Bentleys adopters share: "He's doing amazing & is the best dog. We’re very grateful to have him.We continually ask how he was ever in the shelter"

We're thrilled to share that more than 338 animals found loving homes during Saturday's California Adopt-a-Pet Day event! Congratulations to all the people and pets beginning their new chapters together.

After adopting from us, Dempsey & her sister, Scotland, decided their love for shelter animals wasn’t stopping with their new pet! These compassionate kids created posters & passed out flyers at Crown Point Junior Music Academy encouraging fellow students to donate and give back to animals in need!

This calls for a very big celebration: After more than 500 days, our beloved Mullet has officially been adopted! Her new mom shares: “I was honored to adopt Baby Girl aka Mullet. She’s a wonderful girl — so loving, smart and curious. Thank you to everyone who took care of her until I could.”

AB 2010 (the SNIP Act) has passed out of the Assembly Business & Professions Committee — bringing us closer to expanding access to high-quality spay and neuter services statewide. By removing barriers while maintaining standards, this legislation helps address pet overpopulation at its source.

This National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week, we’re proud to recognize the dedication, compassion and courage of our incredible Humane Law Enforcement team. Because of them, 40 dogs living in a 500-square-foot apartment in unsanitary conditions got a second chance at life!

Our team completed several successful renestings of great horned owlets, giving these babies a second chance to grow up wild with their families! Thank you to our Renest & Reunite team for coordinating and West Coast Arborists for helping us place these babies back into the wild!

Our team has had their hands full with great horned owl babies — 16 in just 10 days! Our team suspects the recent heat may have caused some of these babies to fall from their nests prematurely. They’re now receiving specialized treatment and rehabilitation until they’re ready to return to the wild!

Right now, a pair of male black bear cubs is safe and receiving care at our Ramona Wildlife Center! Our skilled team of wildlife veterinarians performed a comprehensive exam and found the brothers to be in good health. Because they’re so young, they’ll need months of extensive care.

It’s always heartbreaking to see an animal arrive in this condition, but nothing compares to witnessing their transformation once they receive the care they deserve! This was certainly the case for Peluca. Thanks to the swift work of our medical staff, her physical recovery began almost immediately.
