This is considerably more computationally intensive. Instead of downloading, processing, and mapping one channel, my system must do that for three channels and then combine them into a finished image.

A new data-preparation process under the hood makes the improved imagery practical and allows me to make this image in a reasonable time. I'll include it in my graphics going forward!

The GOES-19 satellite's imager observes the Earth using 16 spectral bands. My true-color imagery combines Band 1, the blue visible channel; Band 2, the red visible channel; and Band 3, a near-infrared vegetation channel.

This allows clouds, land, and water to appear more naturally than they do in a single-channel image. Note how high-level clouds (white and gray in the image) stand out from the now colorized and darker surface of Earth.
