Unemployment has run out, and we have yet to get another TV job (though we've come close!). We have savings, but if my work means anything to you, I would really, really, really appreciate you becoming a subscriber. And now you can make me watch your favorite crap!
Not an Episodes subscriber yet? No time like the present — especially since new subscribers, from now until November 1, can force our editor-in-chief @emilystjams.bsky.social to watch, quote, "some bullshit." Details here!

The most boring answer for a Gen-X dude: Star Wars in 1976, near Neenah, WI. My memory is no longer vivid, but I do remember that my uncle had seen it and told me that people fought with laser swords and I didn't believe that was even possible. So I was very hyped and loud when it happened.
First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

“This is a mysterious object that keeps growing in meaning.” Lance Oppenheim is talking about his own movie, You Can See Everything, but that's a perfect encapsulation of how I feel about any great movie, or great work of art. (And YCSE is indeed great.)
Three months on and I haven't replaced the Gabfest with any one podcast. I'm listening more regularly to Blank Check and Screen Drafts but dipping in and out of other stuff as well. Not hard to fill the hour up, but I miss it as kind of an anchor to my podcast week.
I still miss the Slate Culture Gabfest a little every week, but You Can See Everything is the first movie where I've been genuinely bereft at not getting to hear Dana, Julia, and Steve hash it out. (Digger is up there, though Dana is on the Critical Darlings episode.)
Good thread. Really good thread.
🧵My son called from the road. That’s not unusual; he travels for his work in an entertainment industry. We chatted for a minute before he told me he was wearing a hospital gown. My mind went to terrible places, but he sounded cheerful and was, right then, in good enough shape to drive. So I asked:

Glad to see Camas High School following state law and letting a trans girl compete on the cross country team. Disappointed that 12 teammates decided this was something they needed to "protest." Trans women are women. Protect trans kids.
We live in a world where Jamie Tartt is a beloved fictional character, your kid will be fine.
Fascinated by this guy on the James subreddit who likes the name "James" but is worried that the nickname "Jamie" plus their "feminine-sounding surname" will lead to a lifetime of teasing for the kid. So much gendering! Extra funny because "James" itself remains very male-coded.

I am looking forward to the Holmes documentary. But four hours reminding me how awful Musk is is like taking a deep, four-hour sniff of that carton of milk to confirm that yep, it's reeeeeeeally sour.
the elizabeth holmes movie is 3 hours. the musk movie is 4 hours. i actually don't care how good they are as films, i am simply not giving 7 more hours of my brain space to these awful humans. they've already taken enough.

On this week's episode of Blank Check @jamellebouie.net mentioned that he's been listening to a ton of Duke Ellington, so that's been my music the past few days. I already knew and loved Ellington but tend to favor Mingus and hard bop or cool jazz. But Ellington? Fucking rules.
New to me, and outstanding: "Such Sweet Thunder."
