Wow. This article claiming journalists ‘voted through the sale of the Observer’ is completely inaccurate. Simply untrue. The journalists voted for a mitigation package giving better terms. The deal was signed before Christmas against the wishes of G&O journalists.🧵 www.thetimes.com/article/0108...

@fletcherr.bsky.social Times biz desk report on recent developments in Guardian dispute with its NUJ chapel is completely inaccurate. Could you look into it please?

@lukebailey.bsky.social @eleanormia.bsky.social please can you raise with your comment ed.. you are the only two I paper journos easy to find on bsky. Thanks!

Save the Observer@savetheobs.bsky.social

While we’re at it, the I paper is also leaving standards at the door. The writer of this comment piece fails to declare that (a) James Harding gave her job as editor of the Today programme and (b) her husband is partner at Brunswick PR - a biz partner of Tortoise Media. 🙄 inews.co.uk/opinion/obse...

Further to last post… what was actually voted on this week

UPDATE: NUJ achieves concessions for Guardian & Observer journalists The union has been engaged in negotiations with the Guardian Media Group making significant progress over necessary mitigations for journalists www.nuj.org.uk/resource/nuj... @nujofficial.bsky.social

I am amazed the Times would publish something like this. Have they dispensed with fact checkers/subs? Did the reporter miss the bit on the training course where you learn to invite comment from / check the story out with people on both sides? Is it ok to just paste in a quote from a PR and be done?

Just when you thought it couldn’t possibly get any worse… 😔

The Guardian is pushing ahead with its 'sale' of the Observer. But the journalism continues... If you value the Guardian or Observer, I urge you to read this. It's my attempt to investigate 'the money behind the money'. Who is 'buying' us? And why? open.substack.com/pub/broligar...

Wow! Obs friend just told me that they are getting reports of furious readers not just cancelling subscriptions but also demanding a refund for their supporter donations - and at least one has received a near-full refund! This is the letter one sent 🤯🔥 🧵

3/ I would like to cancel my subscription and I also request the money I’ve handed over to date be refunded. I’m outraged by the behaviour of GNM’s management and feel I have been persuaded to donate funds by false promises.

4/ I’m a lifelong Guardian and Observer reader and I think a full refund is the least you can do having seemingly abandoned CP Scott’s mission to uphold UK liberal journalism and behave with integrity.

2/ I have been reading and watching reports of the Guardian’s sale of the historic Observer to a loss making digital startup - despite having £1.3bn in the bank that the Scott Trust chooses not to invest in the title - with dismay.

URGENT: the strikes have made a breakthrough: "..as MPs table early day motion." Politicians express “serious concerns” about Observer sale This could and should be a significant turning point, and they should be cheering down on the picket line. Gov petition next? www.nuj.org.uk/resource/day...

"The sale, which I believe is a thoroughly bad thing for the Observer, was carried out largely in secret, excluding staff who might have made a crucial contribution to the discussions" - Paul Webster, Observer editor, 2018-24 www.theguardian.com/media/2024/d...

"The seeds of its own impending implosion." Journalist @carolecadwalla.bsky.social of The Observer describes the "crisis" caused by the sale of the publication to Tortoise Media, calling it a blow to her defence of mainstream media.

Proud to sign this letter with so many Guardian and Observer colleagues, from reporters to production editors to some of the UK’s most popular columnists. Will the Scott Trust stop and reflect on the fact it’s lost the confidence of its journalists?

*heavy sarcasm

Just catching up on yesterday’s news about the Tortoise takeover of the Obs being signed. Pravda here has got a very balanced report packed with strike action background and views of journalists… www.theguardian.com/media/2024/d...

Sounds like a fun meeting… absolutely incredible that Guardian management signed a deal that 93% of their staff were striking against WHILE they were on strike Proper totalitarian behaviour their from our favourite liberal news org 😂

Press Gazette@pressgazette.co.uk

Scott Trust and Guardian management face staff fury over Observer sale. One speaker said today the process was “damaging for the reputation of The Guardian, you should all be thoroughly ashamed of yourselves” – to which there was applause and cheering. pressgazette.co.uk/news/scott-t...

Everyone who has stood on that picket line today and yesterday has stood for more than just The Observer. They have stood for a free and fair press: something which is being diminished all over the world. I acknowledge, admire and honour each and every person who has been there. Thank you.

On strike today with Guardian @gonuj.org colleagues opposed to the Observer sale. Not on the picket line in tho because I’m in Liverpool to take my mother to watch Everton The message on my Guardian football shirt applies to the Observer, not #EFC, who are very much for sale Just to be clear
