Posters from the motherland - what a wealth of visual inspiration! Highly recommend viewing in chronological order (oldest first), it's a delightful romp through graphic arts history. Also, I dare you to try pronouncing the phonetic transcriptions digital-collections.princeton.edu/collections/...

Many struggle with writing alt text for charts and other other data visualizations. Amy Cesal's "Writing Alt Text for Data Visualization" hammers home the importance of explaining the chart type, the type of data, and the reason for the chart. medium.com/nightingale/...

medium.comWriting Alt Text for Data VisualizationHow do you write text that conveys the whole meaning of a visualization? You probably can’t. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try

This is why in UX we don’t generally ask users what they might like or prefer, and if we do, we still pay more attention to what we observe them do while using websites

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

When people complain about chronological (Following) versus algorithmic (For You) feeds, it pays to remember that revealed preferences are different from people’s stated preferences. We have overwhelming evidence that actual users prefer For You feeds not feeds limited to people they follow.

The answer to “how do we find out X about our website audience/our donors/our community members” is never “ask AI”. They are humans and you can talk to humans. Talk to humans!!

Learned a new term today « synthetic discrimination ». Because regular ol’ discrimination isn’t enough

Tech Policy Press@techpolicypress.bsky.social

In the latest entry in the Hype Studies series on Tech Policy Press, philosopher of technology and media scholar Eugenia Stamboliev writes that AI hype operates as "a gendered regime of visibility," normalizing synthetic images of women while erasing real women from view.

Imagine rearranging an apartment when you’re the kind of person who can tell when something is off by just a few pixels on a screen… I am that person. Things have been nudged by just a few inches more times than I can count. But it might finally be perfect 🥹

Accessibility Awareness@a11yawareness.bsky.social

Hyperlink text should make sense when read out of context. Screen reader users can navigate from link to link, and can listen to links in a list. When navigating this way, only the link is read. So "click here" or "read more" won't make sense.

Hugo nominees! My TBR overfloweth 😍📚 (and The Everlasting is a masterpiece)

honored, bewildered, and slightly weepy to tell you that The Everlasting is nominated for a hugo, alongside all these incredible novels 🥹

For anyone following my broken ankle saga — very happy to report that I’m officially cleared to start physio next week 🎉🎉🎉 just about 2 months post-break and about 5.5 weeks post-op. It almost doesn’t feel real.

WTF are “girly jobs”?! The ones that pay less?? It’s 2026, gendering any job is a wild take. A whole article based on the premise?! Do better, @npr.org

NPR@npr.org

Over the past year, the vast majority of new jobs have gone to women. One economist says to help men find work, we need to embrace ways to "make girly jobs appeal to manly men."

A testament to why sans-serif fonts aren’t great for accessibility. Without the terminal on the lowercase “l” in Al Navarre’s name, one might wonder “what is this artificial intelligent calls Navarre?” when, in fact, Al is a human native of Toledo, Ohio

I might be missing something here but what’s stopping an EmDash plugin from getting hacked and doing the things it was cleared to do before (let’s say accessing the database) but now doing some nefarious with that?

Had a dream last night where I was in a self-driving car with a bunch of people and somehow this car also spat out a bunch of suggestion for healthcare websites. At this point, a friend turned to me and said: " take note of these and spin them up with Claude" and my visceral "no" reaction woke me up

Please celebrate with me: today I’m finally able to put some weight on the ankle that became the victim of Montreal’s thaw/freeze cycle on Wednesday evening. My appreciation for simply walking has skyrocketed. The day when I can take more than a few steps can’t come soon enough!

Every time I see that a band I love is coming to Montreal I hope and pray that they won’t be playing at Place Bell 🫣 yea, the location is convenient enough by metro but the sound there is just terrible… is it me or would y’all also rather see bands at Mtelus or Club Soda?

Ah yes, much like saying “we will give more training to the executioners”

alec karakatsanis@equalityalec.bsky.social

One of many problems with "training" propaganda is that it portrays violence by government as unintentional and accidental. E.g., as something not central to what those in power *want* ICE to be doing. In other words, Democrats pushing "training" are lying to people about the goals:

The last thing I dreamed of this morning was the word « candle-ism » and immediately decided it was a candle-specific kind of vandalism then woke up but… there are many -isms out there. So I bring this v important question to you all: how would you define « candle-ism »? (wrong answers encouraged)

What an absolute waste of time and money just to be extra cruel. There are bigger fish to fry, right? RIGHT?!

The State Department is swapping out Calibri for Times New Roman in all its official documents, reversing a Biden-era change that aimed to increase accessibility for readers with disabilities. n.pr/4oSF4cx

Y’all know I love an npr book recommendation and, my gods, The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow is an absolute triumph. Wouldn’t imagine a book about courtly knights and queen’s quests to be poignantly apropos to our political moment. But it’s this and more. Heartbreaking, defiant, and healing.

May i submit my candidates for 2026’s, Fuck White Supremacy, We Are Not Serene, We Got Stuff To Do ?

is there anything more 2025-coded than “white” being the pantone color of the year

It's simple and effective, just like a lot of accessibility best practices. Accessibility can sound daunting and complex, better left for developers and designers (and there are complex aspects to it) but there's so much good that all of us working on the web can do with the skills we already have!

Because this has certainly changed a lot over years and I feel like the answer is "you can limit/lock down anything you want, anywhere you want" but l'm also sure that there are some nuances, as there always tend to be.

You can read @lukelebrun.ca’s thread for all the details but here’s the gist: if you want journalists in Canada to be able to report on documents leaked by whistleblowers, you want @pressprogress.ca to win this lawsuit. The best way to help is to support this fundraising campaign 👇🏻
