Set out the watch The Apple (1980), and in the process of looking for a place to stream it I somehow ended up watching Apple Pie (1976), a 73-minute fever dream made up of an hour of bizarre nonsense and then a 15-minute dance sequence. This may actually be the strangest movie I have ever seen.

The lead, Tony Azito, was one of the first students admitted to Julliard's drama department. He was in the 1976 Threepenny Opera revival, and the 1980 revival/1983 film of Pirates of Penzance with Kevin Kline. His last film role was Necronomicon with Jeffrey Combs, before dying of AIDS in 1995.

The music for the 15-minute dance sequence was by "The Daryl Hall/John Oates Band." Irene Cara is credited on the poster, despite only being in the dance ensemble. The lady on the poster (who's only in one scene) played Jack's mom on Lost.

Ok, the more I dig into this movie the weirder shit I find. The dad was played by Brother Theodore, a bona fide outsider artist who escaped Nazi Germany only to be deported from Switzerland for "chess hustling." One year after Apple Pie came out, he was the voice of Gollum in the Rankin/Bass Hobbit!

Cool Thing About Following Eurovision Fan Media #73: You're more likely to hear about international news, plus you get way more stoked about it just imagining how happy Konstrakta must be 🎉✊🇷🇸

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

The one that took me most by surprise was Wil Wheaton, to be honest. I was in line just like "Yeah, he's a neat guy, it'd be fun to meet him," and then we made eye contact... suddenly I was six years old again, looking up at the TV screen when he appeared on TNG like

Regardless of their level of mainstream fame, who's someone you were actually starstruck to meet? (This question brought to you by a starstruck-resistant dude I know who didn't bat an eye meeting Jack Black, but lost his ability to form sentences upon meeting Gordon from Sesame Street.)

Tbh I'm just glad it happened in a signing line at a con, not being introduced by one of the friends we would later have in common 😆

ALERT: The Seattle Costco got a new stock of cauldrons today! This is not a drill!! Join me in spooky soup-making glee this season 🥘🥣🎃🥔🫘✨🎉

Not to brag, but I just got the results from my first mammogram and they said my tits are perfect (from a medical imaging perspective).

Me, apropos of nothing for the next week: "Oh, my breast cancer risk? Yeah, it's lower than average. No biggie."

ATTN Libby users! Make sure to set all the filters to the highest level, and UNcheck "deep search only" so it will actually apply to your library's collection. No more disgusting Ai narrators!

My own uncle just emailed me, a professional editor, to ask if I'd be a beta reader on his new book of family history (for free, of course), and was very clear that he didn't need me to edit it, because he'd already done that with Claude. Amazing how rude some people can be, without even trying.

I had a temp job for one week at an edibles company, putting labels on bottles of CBD soda. I wasn't allowed to sit, so I had terrible neck pain the whole time. They offered me a position afterward, surprisingly – I was like "no one who doesn't want the employee discount would say yes to this."

The great thing about sharing a joke on Tumblr that didn't land on Bluesky is that it frequently does way better numbers. The bad thing is that you get a lot of fanfic writers arguing with you about the sexual identities you assigned to puns.

You gotta go for the titles where it changes the structure a little. I almost didn't participate in this one because someone already did Peggy Sue Got Married for Tax Purposes, which like come ON, that's the one.

What's the most cliche "this is just confirming what the haters think" country song title of all time, and why is it Mark Chesnutt's "Bubba Shot the Jukebox"?

This looks like a scene in a movie where someone realizes they're dreaming because all the ads on the subway are word salad.

I missed my tube stop today because I was so busy trying to figure out what Post Hog actually is

Two years ago, I emailed Dropout with some errors I'd found in an old episode of Game Changer. There were dozens, but I just sent the worst ones. I got a mildly snarky reply letting me know they were already working on re-captioning old episodes. That episode's captions remain exactly the same.

Dropout@dropout.tv

Our captioners always go the extra mile to ensure hyper-accuracy 💫

Captions are not a luxury, they're a necessity. Dropout fans with hearing loss deserve to know what's going on just as much as anyone! Dropout has built up a reputation as one of the Good Guys, and that is generally deserved – but it means that when they fall down on the job, it really stands out.

I'm 44 years old and just realized that the music in the "they're taking the hobbits to Isengard" meme is "Concerning Hobbits," AMA

I've been blessed to work with both @elizarickman.bsky.social and @unwoman.com in the past, and the fact that I learned about this incredible serendipity after no fewer than five pieces of bad news this morning feels like a fucking blessing. Please go listen to their cover, it's gorgeous. 💜

All I want is to see Ross Bryant, Grant O'Brien, Jacob Wysocki, and Ify Nwadiwe all in the same room. Just to get a sense of scale. I thought Last Talent Standing would be my chance, but no. 😞

Anyone in Seattle with a Costco card: If you buy me one of the cast iron cauldrons I will absolutely reimburse you, I legit need a 6 quart stockpot and had been toying with the idea of shelling out for a decent one. Please, I need this 😭

I'm listening to a podcast where Jacob Wysocki watched Fight Club on a loop for 72 hours. I'm on the episode where he's 35 hours in, and he just said "the only reason to have time is to lose it when you're sleeping."

The craziest thing? He did this in 2020. I know, you're thinking "Well that makes sense," but no. He did it in *JANUARY 2020*.

Fuck, I must be more tired than I realized because for a minute I felt like this was my new religion.

Someday the Gen Z Steven Spielberg will be making a movie about this woman. People know how to be on the right side of history!

This 33-year-old nurse told the FBI she knew she was “going to set him free” after border patrol agents brought in a man whose face was bloodied and seriously injured. She treated him and helped him escape, and she faces charges now. He got away, and they never relocated him.
