If nothing else, just read the opening paragraphs of the new @vevalenz.bsky.social piece. This sort of casual cruelty, and worse, is so common in U.S. jails/prisons that to most it barely registers as scandalous—but it is, and this reporting really matters: boltsmag.org/california-p...

ICE is engaged in a very large escalation nationwide, with the agency claiming to be hitting record arrest numbers amid the return of quotas. This has gotten very little attention from the media because ICE learned lessons from the chaotic disasters of Kristi Noem’s tenure. Keep a watch.
ICE is surging in the Seattle area. (Map shows activity in the last week) Do you have your whistle with you?

I deeply regret reading this piece--but also feel compelled to point out that it contains this absolutely spectacular example of Both Sides-ing it. An NYT all-timer "influencers who are accused of human trafficking and rape" are "functionally equivalent" to feminists

Holy wow, this lineup. I've attended a couple other one-day conferences organized by @roxanegay.bsky.social at Rutgers, and they have been excellent Hot tip: If you're heading to New Brunswick from NYC, a NJ Transit train will leave you a short walk from the building where this is held

I am not being hyperbolic. Our insistence on segregating our histories, in encapsulating the struggle for voting/civil rights as a Black struggle and not an American one, has helped bring us to this moment. We did not have representative democracy until 1965. W/o the VRA, it is unlikely to survive.

The trope that associates violent profiteering by elites and their henchmen with being “tough on crime” was pushed by both right wing and liberal media organizations for decades. It is one of the great achievements of modern propaganda to associate cruelty and domination and violence with “safety.”

Contrary to public perception a huge % of pregnant teenagers in the 1990s were impregnated by adult men. The younger they were, the larger the average age gap between mother and father was. Fixing teen pregnancy was in part a clampdown on statutory rape. That's what conservatives want to reverse.
Fox News doc on lower fertility rate: "The problem is teens and young adults, from ages 15-19 the fertility rate is down 7%, and it's down 70% over the last two decades, meaning we're telling people that are young not have babies, to wait until they're in a more stable life situation"

Donald Trump packages up & brands his insane propaganda to serve several functions. It turns BOTH opponents & supporters into data mules, & does so on his terms, AND by doing so reinforces polarization. If you must screen cap repackage it to disrupt branding. Or just quote the most insane bits.
A reminder that when you screencap and disseminate Trump's insane posts, rather than either filtering them or even just -- golly gee!! -- quoting them, you are serving as willful data mules for his propaganda system.

Everyone who works for the NYT — including my many friends — should be incredibly embarrassed by this statement. The depths to which the NYT will go to back its agenda of challenging trans people's right to exist is horrifying, ongoing, and has caused very real and specific harms to trans people.

It's budget season in NYC, and despite promises to commit .5% to NYC libraries, Mamdani has instead proposed cuts. The budget is now with the City Council, which will counter-propose--so it's time to contact your council member. @nycplan.org has all the info you need: nycplan.org Takes ~2 mins
While a candidate, @mayor.nyc.gov pledged to commit 0.5% of the city’s budget to public libraries. Unfortunately, Mayor Mamdani has broken this promise in his preliminary FY27 budget, released yesterday, where he allocated 0.39% to libraries. This amount is well below the promised 0.5%
