For Indian readers: preorders are open for The Pictures of Darpan Ray! Here's the publisher's post: Set in a Bollywood transitioning between the multiplex and AI eras, this is a layered, dark, and wickedly funny story about friendship, ambition, and the monstrous machinery of modern stardom.

For readers outside India - there’s another announcement I hope to be making soon, about a different book with a different title in a different genre and a different pub date, because obviously a Bollywood Dorian Gray retelling can’t be expected to take just a single form. Do stick around!

The Pictures of Darpan Ray is my first contemporary novel. It’s a reimagining of The Picture of Dorian Gray, set mostly in Mumbai/Bollywood between the ‘00s and the ‘20s: a twenty-first-century vortex obsessed with youth, beauty, power, art, spirituality and conformity.

Congratulations!!

Woke up this morning and this beautiful trophy was in the house and it was not a dream. Utterly stunned, extraordinarily grateful, deliriously happy. Such a privilege to be part of this year's shortlist, huge thanks to the Clarke Award judges and congrats again to all the brilliant nominees 💫🤍🐺

MAKE ME BETTER is my forthcoming novel about the horrors of community. It is about cults, wellness, control, and the things we will do to escape grief. Sometimes it hurts to grow -- but your community believes that you can be made pure. It comes out in May. us.macmillan.com/books/978125...

One day I'll remember how to post a newsletter at a time when people read their email but in my defence I am on a ship in the Pacific ocean & time is, among other things, a social construct from which I have been abstracted for the foreseeable future ANYWAY MY NEW BOOK IS OUT TODAY

I found the ep in PLURIBUS where Carol--white, American--meets 5 non-white, non-American survivors of the hivemind off-putting, but in a way that made me curious to see where Gilligan was going. Now that I have, I wrote about how empire, privilege, genAI, & resistance converge in the show's subtext:

reactormag.comResisting the Hivemind: Pluribus, Generative AI, and Empire - ReactorWhile its creator tell us that Pluribus is not about advent of generative AI, it's difficult not to spot the many places where the fledgling tech and extraterrestrial hivemind overlap.
