It has taken nearly 18 months and a number of false starts but I've finally got the tractor running again. Luckily, or not, depending on your perspective, the weather over the last year and a half has meant very little growth so no need for the tractor.

Part of the problem is that the model doesn't really exist anywhere outside of China, so parts supply is tricky. And the engine is not common, but the model number is shared with a number of configurations so even parts that are supposedly for it don't necessarily fit.

As an example the main crankshaft oil seal, after trying two separate suppliers, was still 1mm too wide in the centre and 2mm too big overall. Ended up measuring it up and getting a generic seal from an engineering supplier.

Next week I take over as Captain of the local CFA. What a time to be in the hot seat! The ESVF is causing so much heartache, and the morale of the volunteers is plummeting. We already had problems fielding crews, and I'm trying to work out how to encourage people to turn out. Wish me luck.

What's more is that this levy doesn't even guarantee extra funding for the emergency services. It doesn't even fully meet current budgets, let alone have provisions for expanding that. It just shifts it from General Revenue to cover for the holes in the state budget.

And I realise I'm shouting into the void, but this bill should be renamed "The Budget Blackhole Top Up Fund Act". Let's have some truth in politics. Oh, did I mention that the creation of this bill contravenes the CFA Act 1958 Clause 6G?

A word on the woman in the foreground. Probably less than half my age, yet a Lieutenant, so highly regarded in her brigade. I know I can count on her on a fireground as she knows she can on me - not because of the helmet sticker. Because we both wear the CFA yellow. We look after our own.

Why should we turnout to car accidents on public highways, often to stand there doing traffic direction, when that is the job of the paid Police? Washaways on VicRoads highways? That is their job. Rescue? That is SES. But CFA is expected to turn out every time.

The ESVF is a cynical use of the goodwill of the CFA volunteers to blind people to the fact that there is a budget shortfall and rather than fix that, they have carved out services that they think people won't complain about paying for into a levy (read TAX).

It is galling that this government would use that against us. Farmers are being asked to pay more than 4 times what the general public does and still show up without pay, and often foregoing paid work, to fight fires. Fires that often start on government land.

The CFA membership is the old, the young, men and women, and is often a family affair. It is both the core and a representation of rural communities. We are part of the community and put our lives on the line to protect community. It seemed to be a surprise to Melbournians that we don't get paid

As a CFA operational volunteer and Lieutenant I fully support the action being taken by brigades statewide today. The action by the state government will result in deaths. People are already doing it tough and something is going to break. Too many single car accidents already.

This one is interesting - 9 vehicles in total responded, it took over 2 hours. I might need to keep track of the interim updates so that information isn't lost. 3 vehicles involved in the crash, car on fire. All occupants safe with some injuries. ...

A couple of passers-by were first on scene and got the occupants of the car out before it burst into flame, and it happens that I know one of those who helped out. Proud to know that while others were videoing the scene, our friend and another tradie pushed them aside to save a life. ...

You have to wonder what we've done to society that means you'd rather stand there with a phone recording a potential death than get in there and help. Sure, you may not be able to physically assist - but getting in the way of those that can just to get a snippet for your socials? Pathetic.

This was marked as Safe 2 days ago, so why is it coming up again? Typically this will be that the local crew asked for the job to be kept open so they could monitor it, so ESTA only marks it as closed once they get the go-ahead from them.

The Responding status should only show once, but it does get updated when new units are turned out, so if that is of interest I can enable that. I figured it would be confusing seeing the same alert with only the number of resources changing.

This one is interesting - it was at Responding a few minutes ago, so it may be that the unit responding couldn't muster a crew or was diverted elsewhere.

The error message in the "From" line is actually in the source data, not, as I thought, a bug in my code. Now detected and elided.

Sizes are only really reported for bushfires and grass and scrub fires. Another thing to clean up.

The SES feed is problematic. Often seem to get the same job with just enough differences to confuse the de-dup logic. Also the tags come from the 2 category fields which seem to always be the same for SES. Will try and clean that up tomorrow.

A Safe status doesn't mean the fire is out. Only that the resources on scene are enough to finish the job so others assigned can be released. Often the local crew will babysit a Safe fire overnight if conditions could result in a reignition.

Only the first update per status is posted. For Responding Resources often shows as 0. This will get updated as trucks are added - that just gets noisy. When it goes to "Not Yet Under Control" or "Controlled" the number is closer. "Safe" numbers can be lower as trucks are released before this.

Resources depend on the service, and get updated as the situation evolves. For CFA they are vehicles or strike teams. For FFMV they include people, tankers, dozers and slip-ons. A strike team usually consists of 4 or 5 trucks and a FCV (Field Command Vehicle). Trucks have up to 5 people.
