Congratulations to President Lula and the people of Brazil! Brazilians have chosen democracy, social justice and a future that rejects the far right. This is a powerful reminder that progressives can win when we fight for working people, stand up for our values and never give up hope.

Steve makes a good point and I 100% agree. I suppose it's useful to some others to allow Alberta to be the sin-eater for the rest of the country 🤷‍♂️

Steve Smith@edmlawyersteve.bsky.social

Anyway, I am not at all convinced that the immigration questions wouldn’t have passed by a comparable margin in any other province (given comparable surrounding circumstances—i.e. public discussion on them overshadowed, pushed by a comparably unpopular government, etc.).

I’m hearing from friends in Alberta that today is actually hitting folks pretty hard. Not the vote to remain, which was a relief, but the other 9 questions.

what's particularly galling about the calls to coddle and take the infantile demands of separatists seriously with "dialogue," there will be no such calls to listen to the people who voted in much larger numbers against racist policies in the other questions

Awful results in Alberta, where voters had the literacy to vote overwhelmingly against separation but not to toss out the 5 racist immigration red herrings, which now get weaponized by provinces, police, & the feds to crack down even harder. www.jurist.org/commentary/2...

Over 2.1 million votes currently being counted (and the number is increasing). Out of 2.9 million eligible voters. That is over 72% voter turnout and increasing.

Early results coming in. Albertans should be incandescent with rage at Smith for putting the province and the country through this at huge cost. The cost is far more than 130 M dollars when you include the investment driven away and the damage to the fabric of the country and province. F*ck her.

I guess the separatists can celebrate one important victory: total capture of the CBC

Jimmy Thomson@jameswsthomson.com

Same panelist (who the fuck is this) just said Alberta is a province "whose votes fundamentally don't matter" because it doesn't get to unilaterally choose the federal government. Two of the last three PMs have been from Alberta.

This is what I tell people from outside of Alberta: you notice how these people have failed after all this time to produce a single presentable standard-bearer? It’s because they have nobody presentable—this is not a broad-based movement. It is a congregation of our most egregious kooks.

Alberta separatist leader Mitch Sylvestre starts railing against the “new world order and globalism” on CBC News Network’s live broadcast just now

I understand that they need to talk to supporters on both sides of the separatist issue because otherwise Pierre Poilievre and his five supporters will January 6th the CBC building, but the lack of pushback on separatists' arguments as to why poor lil Alberta deserves righteous justice is maddening

Ryan Pollard reposted

...But sure, CBC will interview three separatists at length while we wait forever for hand-counts and the Premier hides, because no harm will come of amplifying their rhetoric beyond the usual maple-MAGA echo chambers, right? This is the stupidest damned day.

Separatism "is a threat because it normalizes and scales up organizing for white supremacist, anti-immigrant policies, laundering them through western alienation. This referendum is a tool for demonstrating and building the far-right’s power and organizational capacity in Canada." #abpoli #cdnpoli

Most of the coverage tonight has been a relitigation of Alberta’s grievances. Talking to separatists whining about Trudeau, panelists whining about Trudeau…and nobody ever really trying to introduce facts to their feelings. Pathetic.

You don't have to do this, @cbcradiocanada.bsky.social. It's a choice. They want to defund you. They think you're a propaganda arm of an evil government. You will never win them over by showing them grace when they show absolutely none towards you.

thinking about how there used to be a lot of places I could go and just expect to see people I knew and could just visit/hangout with them. I actually do have a place like that now again (the courthouse cafeteria)

I hate texting so much. I hate the fact that phones are the only way to maintain a social life. I want to live in a place where people are just chilling in standard places you can find them. Neighbours popping in to chat. I want to throw my phone in the ocean

Oyster fishing is a way of life on PEI, but disease is threatening to wipe out the sector that has sustained communities here for generations. In an unstable world, we need to protect Canada's industries. I spoke with fishers in Charlottetown to learn what the federal government can do to help.

It was a pleasure to speak at ABmunis today and connect with municipal leaders from across Alberta. Over the last seven years, the UCP government has placed an unsustainable burden on our local governments.

One of two signs spotted today in Leduc, Alberta at the side of major roadways in this city and placed by the group, Let Alberta Decide. Are you really doing that (letting Albertans decide that is) when your sign promotes a particular choice to the separation referendum question 🤔?

I don't post a lot on here and furthermore don't do a lot of personal stuff but my friend of 40+ years and I did the Rockwall Trail in Kootenay this week and it was a very good experience.
