If anyone tells you the job market isn't a mess, poke them in the eye and call them names cuz they are either insane or lying to you. I say this after spending 159 days without a full-time job (not counting freelance and contract work). Here are a few fun stats:

Final stat: I approached looking for a job like, well, a job. Some rejections stung, but I didn't take it personally... except for TWO companies. I won't name them, but the process was so long, intense, the people were dismissive, and required free work. I still wonder if it was a scam.

I'm posting these reflection just for fun, and because I kept a LOT of notes. Plus, I know looking for a job these days can be a discouraging process. Maybe this will help to at least offer some perspective.

Most of my rejections were timely, but some came after MONTHS of dead air... like ridiculously long stretches. Here are the tops: 5) A consulting company - 92 days 4) An AI company - 92 days (rejected today!) 3) A non-profit activist group - 105 days 2) A "Magnificent 7" tech company - 127 days

I had 37 total interviews with 22 companies, including six companies that I had three or more rounds of interviews with -- the record was six interviews over the course of five weeks... which ended with a generic form rejection letter two weeks later. I was also ghosted 3 times after an interview.

Four companies assigned me homework/assignments. A few were simply "how would you pitch this company," while a few were more extensive and asked for complete campagin strategies. They all ended in rejection. Of the four, two left very bad tastes in my mouth. Here's my favorite stat:

I started with three basic resumes (tailored different industries), then started tailoring them to the specific job. I also threw out the older ones and started over five times with new styles and templates. In total, I have 36 unique resumes on my computer, each notably different.

So the full picture: 374 applications, 215 that went into the void, 123 formal rejections, ~11 soft rejections, 3 recruiter dead-ends, and interviews with 22 companies. It all led to one contract offer, and eventually one full time hire. Here's the fun stuff:

I applied to 374 jobs, averaging 16.5 apps per week. Several of those didn't allow for cover letters or used questions on a website rather than take a cover. I also reused a generic cover (with tweaks) probably 50-ish times. I still wrote around 119 original cover letters from scratch (mostly).

I have to say, after hearing some of Justice Thomas' 14th arguments, he seems like an interesting guy. Interesting in the same way that ebola or a gas station egg sandwich is interesting, but still.

Can we stop acting like David Ellison pulled off some genius business maneuver? He bitched for months, then badly overpaid for a company that's been hemorrhaging money.

It kind of sucks looking for a job in PR and comms right now. On the one hand, I don't want to lose a job because of something dumb I said on social media, but on the other, if that type of company cared I would never want to work for them anyway.

BREAKING: The ICE agent who fatally shot Renee Good last week in Minneapolis, Jonathan Ross, suffered internal bleeding to the torso following the incident, according to two U.S. officials briefed on his medical condition.

Oh man, I bet the Democrats are working on a STRONGLY worded letter right now. Just blistering. Feelings may even be slightly hurt.

If Trump launches an illegal war against Venezuela without congressional authorization Congress must impeach him immediately. He has no legal authority to start a war. It’s insane, unconstitutional, and criminal.

If Google is going to act like we're BFFs and wish me a happy birthday when I log onto gmail, it's only right they should send me a present of some kind too. Cuz you know what, faceless software? I aint your buddy, guy.

Just discovered that my Reddit account -- which I've had for 10+ years -- was connected to my email and so I can't access it anymore. Countless posts and comments, just gone. The weirdest part is that I'm not sure I care. It's like leaving a piece of myself behind. But maybe that's a good thing.

I don't know why people think Trump will be satiated with this. He doesn't do "gratitude." He's been bribed and flattered many times in the past, and he then promptly turned and screwed over the people that "honored" him. He's done it a million times and will do it again.

this shit is just beyond parody, man

Show of hands, does anyone believe Trump's bullshit about Portland? As someone that live in Portland, I feel like I'm having an aneurysm every time he comes up with some new lie about us.

Did even ONE member of the press try a follow-up? Just one? I get that doing that might get them booted, but why bother staying if you're just covering bullshit anyway?

He doesn’t remember nominating Jerome Powell.

The Petrova story is messing with me more than most. It's not (just) ICE trying to deport her off to jail and possible death for a misdemeanor, it's the "I'm not MAGA, but..." people that are rationalizing ignoring the Constitution because she had lab samples on her. It ends with a whimper.

Just looked at Twitter for the first time in a while and it's mind blowing how many Russian bots are all over the comments. Sure, could just be a lot of horrible, vapid, weird people, but they stink of bots and fake profiles.

Dems in Congress should be organizing mass protests in and out of Chambers every day, while screaming bloody murder. "Deeply concerned" tweets/posts and strongly worded panels aint gonna cut it.
