Recently I have on two occasions experienced smaller record artists who release a new album, I buy it on the date of release, and then shortly after they announce a limited edition or even an alternative variant of the record with a couple additional songs on it, and I think it is such a dick move.

I consider adopting the principle that any service which when accessing it by a direct link to a resource, if it sends me on a detour, e.g. to log in or anything else, and afterwards it fails to proceed to the resource I was initially navigating to, I will completly abandon using this service.

Opening Spotify to control Spotify already running on another device. When selecting the other device, it will immediately start playing. Just from selecting where to play. The digital products we hail as best of breed, look up to and emulate are so fucking bad, and we need to call that out more.

So tired of AI advocates from the basis that a dev works by picking a feature request, then builds it, and AI is good b/c it largely decreases the cost of that activity. That is not how to build software products, and if you do follow this workflow, coding is certainly not "the most expensive part".

Because that is a topic for conversation explicitly disallowed in the preamble of any management initiated AI competency workshops. It distracts from learning how emplyees can use AI to benefit their employers.

With streaming services you can do stuff like play, pause, skip, and queue up stuff. Basic stuff that Winamp managed to get right in the late 90s. Functionality a CD-player managed to handle before that. Which makes it very adorable that @youtubesupport.bsky.social is a paid service.

With tokens getting more expensive, there are efforts put into automating use of different models for different tasks to optimize costs. More moving parts, more things to fail. Our profession has potential to contribute to good, but as engineers we keep solving problems created by engineers instead.

I just searched one half of a now defunct duo, wondering what he's currently doing. The summary given by Google informs he works as a music producer, and also currently serving a 2 year jail sentence. Had to do a second search to specifically “ask” if this is the same person. It is not. I hate AI.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but the solution to product teams enjoying "enablement" from any "enablement" teams, but still not able to deliver value at a desired pace, is _not_ to scale up any "enablement" teams.

Omg, slutt å bring inn YtRiNgSfRiHeT hver eneste gang noen kritiserer utsagnene dine!

I think we are now at the point where we don’t need to qualify AI with “slop” anymore, this can safely be assumed to be the case when referring only to “AI". I propose instead to further qualify the cases of AI actually providing positive effects, shouldn’t wear down your keyboard too much.

So with AI we managed to shift the focus from "how can we ensure our output creates most value, and if our output actually solves problems in the best possible way" securely back into "we must measure how much output we produce".

I get the praise for Excel. It's a remarkably useful software. But we don't talk enough about it being 2026, Excel still associates itself with the *.csv extension, even though it never manages to properly read CSV without any user intervention, which it doesn't offer on double-clicking such a file.

It really should exist some hacker activist group or something which one could report online harassment to, and they would then track down the harasser and make their life miserable.

I thought I "got" product development, and it being the next evolution of iterative development/exploring/learning, always work on the right problem. Then I learned it can be simplified to agile development, and _include_ corporate interests, and suddenly it makes sense why all software become shit.

The reason you need to measure and collect feedback on the most trivial things, and be ready to improve the UI, is that even though you prominently display a button on your landing page, without need for scrolling, which says “Do X”, users will still complain they are not able to find where to do X.

Would be refreshing if instead of answering questions by _not_ actually answering, politicians instead said something in the line of “you are now touching on a dark and unfortunate consequence of our politics and values, so I am not comfortable to give an honest answer on this matter”.

The ideal with flat, “clean”, no texture, no illusion of depth, “Material Design” UIs emerged because of corporate need to be spend less money on building visuals. Not from any wish to build better and more intuitive UX for end-users.

If anything referring to existing or potential software appears in your OKR, you are probably not doing OKR, but instead upfront enumerating tasks you plan to do over the coarse of few next months. I.e. old-style planning you have probably acknowledged to be sub-effective since you attempt at OKR.

Your irregular reminder that, even in languages where nullability is not captured by the type system, using an empty String as the absence of a String is worse than using null.

So a colleague ordered some stuff, and discovered that the carrier was UPS. Instead of struggling with UPS failing their core business (a.k.a. delivering) she just immediately opted for the return fee for the store. Imagine delivering a service in such a manner people would pay to avoid it.

The main problem with Jira is not that it is bad software, although it is enshittified beyond belief. The issue is focusing on tasks _in a development and innovation context_ and using tools that enforce and/or make it hard to leave this mindset, and Jira excels at this.

It is equally possible to use arguably “better” tooling that may be more aligned with modern and effective software/product dev practices, and still be task-oriented. The difference is in to what degree a tool “drives” status quo of obsolete practice. No tool is neutral in affecting human behavior.

nrk.noMener Øyafestivalen burde stoppet Israel-kritikkArtisten Musti brukte slagordet «Død, død over IDF» på Øya lørdag kveld.

So many SoMe apps I wouldn’t care if were regulated into oblivion by consumer rights laws. But it also fascinates me how many people are genuinely surprised and outraged when the apps they use for free use dark UX patterns to try making their income source (typically ads) more effective.

The smartass who came up with the brilliant idea to make localized versions of Visual Basic and spreadsheet formulas, is today working in the company who makes the search input field in emoji selectors 💀

So I (re-)signed up on Instagram. Exploring viable alternatives to Facebook to follow artists and bands to reliably catch when they are playing and other updates. Almost instantly regretting. You can tell IG is owned by FB, as their app is on a similar level of shittyness.

Legitimate users got a crippled version of the program, and those chosing to pirate it (I do not condone that at all) got a way better version than the people who paid for it. It was also some who paid for the software, as you should, and used the crack to unlock the full performance.

I was actually looking forward to exploring what various artists and bands I take interest in are posting on IG, but seems I have to not be too eager, or I might upset the shitty algorithms that supposedly detect shady activity. What a joke.

Now got a popup saying that they restrict how often one can do “certain actions” (such as following someone, as I was trying to do). I am newly registered on the platform, want to get up to speed, but it doesn’t allow me to. Fine, but don’t offer functionality if it is not allowed to be used, geez.

Sort of brings memories to how some music software implemented copy protection. They essentially made a hardware key. It held up for a while, but eventually cracked. Then it was discovered that people using the crack got way more performance, because of shitty coding of the checks against the key.

My IG account actually got temporarily suspended because “activity”. Which in my case was following some friends, following a bunch of bands, creating one boring post of a meal (that’s a first for social media), commenting on one post hoping for a band to play in Oslo. This is so fucking tiresome.

Had a @cinemassacre.bsky.social “Just walk over it” moment. Revisited a 3yo hack I used PowerMock for some weird test conditions. Want to get rid of PwrMock, tried to adjust my approach, other reflection hacks, no avail. Then it dawned how I could just used regular language facilities all the time 🤬

One of my Java pet peeves is the method names for _empty_ Lists and Sets are just “of” with no args. “Oh, if not applicable, just pass a list of.” “Of? OF WHAT??” Would prefer either List.empty() or even List.emptyList(). I tend to statically import Collections.emptyList(), because it reads better.

If devs were given the tools and facilities to model their data with the exact shape required for each context the data is used, instead of encouraging one single model to rule them (the often misunderstood "core domain"), LazyLoadingExceptions would not even be a thing.

In an act of desperation, today I reached for JDK dynamic proxies to solve a "frameworky” problem. Last time I did this was 2013. Got the proxy to work as intended, but luckily it was still not quite applicable for the problem, so had to abandon it. Eventually solved with regular static facilities 😮‍💨

It may just be that my first muting frenzy on @bsky.app will be people using X screenshots to seed their posting here like "oh, look at this stupid thing they say on X". I know X is stupid. I know the X owner is a fucking numbnut. I am not interested in X content. That's why I stopped using X.
