names express parents' hopes and dreams for their children. that's why all the children of biologists are named Luca

very sweet note from a former student saying they admired my intellectual voracity, which they didn't find in many other professors

it is a very distinctive quality if mine, and is responsible for both my greatest academic strengths and my deepest scholarly weaknesses. so i was quite touched

not really something i get much choice in, i'm rather fatalist about The Basic Ways I Am, i strive only to be good versions of those ways

spam email offered me a service that will let me "generate 300% more from [my] alzheimer's research", and i think that's a big win for truth in advertising. i do believe their product can do that

"so what they are just going to vote republican" no, they are going to pack their shit and move to somewhere else where their child will be safe. this shit isn't a game, its life and death for years now we have been witnessing an internal trans refugee crisis in the states for this reason

liberalcurrents.comThe American Transgender Refugee CrisisIf this were occurring abroad, to an ethnic minority, we would call it ethnic cleansing.

do you really expect the loving parents of a trans kid to vote for a politician who promises to take their child's healthcare away? you'd be absurd to say yes we have friends, family spouses. when you come for us they aren't going to throw us away, that's what they'll do to you

thinking about the trans woman in england murdered by the government rules designed to murder trans women thinking as well about the ballot measure i voted on today that, if it passes, would legally require that every girl who wants to play interschool sports be sexually assaulted

mostly it's to endeavor to persevere in my own being, and to pass from a lesser to a greater perfection, i think

when reading a philosophy of science paper, it's often important to help out the author by crossing out otiose footnotes

applying the principle of charity when i read by assigning responsibility for all "[view] ≠ anything goes" statements to reviewer 2 rather than to the author

Who is on the Olympic podium of early work / late work transformation? In my opinion Heidegger and Wittgenstein are getting medals but who else?

who called it "eliminative materialism" and not "'sike!' of somatic"

i think this every time i see someone arguing that we can Phrase our way out of Bad Thing and into Good Thing

Nvidie@dervine7.bsky.social

this really is a discourse designed to annoy me specifically, since it also involves the tendency to attribute more power to certain linguistic phenomena than I think they actually have

One narcissistic quibble: Ludo lumps me in with "reflective" accounts, but on his taxonomy I'd call myself an eliminationist; I think debates over "adaptationism" as such are pseudo-disputes, though, as with many pseudo-disputes, they can harbor many genuine disputes within them

But, in fairness, the argumentative portions of One Kind of Adaptationism are reflective in Ludo's sense, while the eliminative import is left as a promissory note at the end. (I spell it out in somewhat more detail at the end of Structure and Function).

as a reminder, if you put "no pun intended" in a journal article, you are lying

Berna Devezer@devezer.bsky.social

lol i'm generally more irritated by out-of-place puns than you might be so they're all so immensely resistable to me. but yeah the preemptive cushioning makes it much worse.

i am extremely not anti puns and jokes in academic papers but i hate the twee faux-shame we show about them. just make the pun!

i tried to prep a very messy dissertation chapter for journal publication by cutting all the bad stuff and it ended up 3000 words longers
