Starting therapy can bring up lots of questions. Here are the ones we hear most: WILL A THERAPIST GIVE ME ADVICE? Advice isn't psychotherapy. You can get advice from friends/ the internet. Your therapist will help you see yourself & your situation more clearly so you can make informed choices. 1/6

WHAT IF I'M UNHAPPY W/ MY THERAPIST? You should feel you can talk to your therapist & that they're interested in & understand you. If you don't connect in the beginning, it's wise to choose someone else. As therapy continues, you may feel upset or disappointed. This is normal. Talk about it. 5/6

IS THERAPY LIKE TALKING TO A FRIEND? With friends, you pick & choose what you talk about. In therapy, you try to say whatever comes to mind, without knowing where your thoughts may lead. Friends take turns sharing information. In therapy, you will do most of the talking. 4/6

HOW WILL TALKING HELP ME? Talking is the heart of psychotherapy. As you talk, you come to know yourself better. You start to recognize patterns. New options and possibilities emerge. Research shows that most people benefit from therapy, even those with the most serious problems. 3/6

WHAT DO I DO IN THERAPY? Talk as openly as you can about whatever is on your mind. Some thoughts will seem unimportant. Others may feel unpleasant, embarrassing, or inappropriate, including thoughts about your therapist. Say them anyway. 2/6

The feelings will come whether you want them or not. The key is to acknowledge them without judgement, and take care of yourself as they work their way through your body. Self-regulation is not something most of us are taught, but it can certainly be learned. 📽️ @the_outdoor_therapist
