Green capitalism won't fix the climate crisis, Ulrich Brand and Markus Wissen argue. It speeds up the fight over resources and feeds the far right. Brand talks through his book Capitalism at the Limit with Suzanne Schneider from @brooklyninstitute.bsky.social on Oct 15, 5 pm ET, online.

October 5, 1988: Chile votes No on eight more years of Pinochet, 55.99 to 44.01, with 97.6% turnout. One of the people campaigning for Yes that fall was José Antonio Kast. He's been Chile's president since March. Photo: the day after, by Felipe Antonio Valdés

Our call for case stories on Non-Economic Loss and Damage is extended to October 7. Climate loss and damage gets argued over in dollars, and whatever can't be priced (health, culture, heritage, the right to stay in a place) drops out. We want to tell these stories.

Wolfgang Kaleck has no illusions about how strong the law is. He uses it anyway, for Patrice Lumumba's family and for survivors of Assad's prisons. On Sept 30 he discussed his new book, The Power of Law, with Sakiko Fukuda-Parr and Philip Alston at The New School.

Our office has been a true believer in reforming the UN Charter to make it actually represent today's world from day one. Last night we sponsored the Article 109 reception pushing that case forward, alongside Helen Clark and dozens of others. The work has only just begun!

40 years since the UN recognized development as a human right. It has never been implemented. Debt and IMF/World Bank conditions still strip developing countries of the sovereignty to exercise it. International Covenant on the Right to Development, now!

@dielinkeberlin.bsky.social just became the strongest party in Berlin for the first time in its history: 25.7 percent, more than double their 2023 result. Part of that came from New York, where our office has spent the past year building ties between German and American politicians on the left.

Through the lens of the herbarium, Claudia Horn illuminates the connections between the study of flora, the naturalist movement, and the plantation economy, showing that the decolonization of botany and global environmental justice are both possible and necessary.

Better known for her revolutionary politics, Rosa Luxemburg was also an avid botanist. Between 1913 and 1918, even while incarcerated in Poland and Germany for her anti-war organizing, she collected plants sent to her by friends or found in the prison grounds.

This lavishly illustrated study, the first of its kind, brings together pages from Luxemburg’s herbarium, personal letters that richly detail her fascination with nature, and a discussion of her ecological critique of colonial capitalism.

When 34-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won NYC’s mayoral race last year, his election was described as a “political earthquake.” If the metaphor is apt, then the city’s Dem primaries were a series of powerful aftershocks. @nickfrenchnyc.bsky.social has analyzed the results for us.
