Went to see Wildwood tonight. What a beautiful film. I realize there’s always the danger of recency bias, but I think it’s my favourite Laika film. The sets and animation are just staggering. (Also - packed theatre and applause at the end; hopefully a good sign for its box office!)

Inktober Day Twenty-Three: Dapper It is so much faster and easier to write these when it's not midnight and I'm not completely exhausted.

Inktober Day Twenty-Two: Beacon Man, the rendering on this one really got away from me, but I went to a life drawing class tonight and didn't have time to try again. (Super fun to go to life drawing again, though!)

Reading this this morning I don’t love that I used ‘those’ twice in back to back sentences. But it was late and I was tired. 😔

Took a high stick to the face last night. It wasn’t bad, didn’t even bleed, but it did make me reconsider my assumptions about my own invulnerability. Maybe it’s time to switch from a half visor to a full cage?

Inktober Day Nineteen: Confused 'Muzzy' was apparently Victorian-era slang for confused or dazed, but it occurs to me as I post this it's entirely possible it has come to mean something entirely different in the interim and I'm just going to gamble that it's not a weird sex thing.

Inktober Day Eighteen: Flightless Originally this was the idea for yesterday's prompt, but then I read about Victorian-era cane guns and decided to change things around.

Inktober Day Sixteen: Gangly I'm not sure I made the fingers quite long enough to properly connect to the prompt but there's no time for redos, I'm afraid.

Inktober Day Fifteen: Hooray I don't drink, so had to look a bunch of stuff up to write this (and still probably got it wrong).

Inktober Day Eleven: Rescue When I was doing the art, I'd intended the Roman numeral IV to represent the number of active tokens associated with the bell, but I couldn't find a way to squeeze that bit in there. Writing these has been a real exercise in figuring out what I can and can't include.

Inktober Day Ten: Mystical Made it just under the wire, by which I mean actually over the wire, but frankly I spent the day at Ikea and it's a miracle this got done at all.

Inktober Day Seven: Panic We made it a week! It might seem like after a few of these you'd stop over-thinking and second-guessing every word you've written, but nope!

Inktober Day Six: Ogre Would have liked to tweak the wording a bit more, but I have a 10:30 hockey start and I'm out of time.

Inktober Day Three: Miniature This was meant to be a quick exercise every day but I'm finding it surprisingly time-consuming? Hopefully I can stick it out for the duration.

Inktober Day One: Apple I knew I'd never have time to do a full illustration every day, but wanted to do something this year, so I'm just going to do a little drawing and an accompanying blurb - like they were inventory items in a game that doesn't exist. Very rusty with brush and ink!

It seems weird to complain about given that prior to this year I hadn’t played hockey in about twenty years…but now summer hockey is done and I have to wait more than a month to play again and that seems cruel.

The PWHL Sceptres beat the Victoire, the Flames beat the Oilers, and Canada won their game at the World Juniors (although kudos to Latvia, they played HARD). A great day of hockey and all of my teams won!

In the Banff townsite yesterday we found this crow who had perched himself on the roof of the public latrine and was yelling at everyone who walked by. I feel like if we’d stuck around a little longer maybe he would have given us a side quest.

Finally had a bit of free time (work is busy!) and I thought I'd poke at the Rune stuff I was working on a little bit. Mainly I wanted to try mocking up a couple of cards with actual text and stats to see how badly things fell apart. (Card text is blurred out since the copy doesn't belong to me.)

So this is where I've kind of landed for now. These are rough paintovers, so I'll have to actually make it look good, but I think having some toggleable elements that can fill space when needed (or disappear otherwise) will help with all of the empty space.

I think the more subdued move/attack/block icons feel a lot better as well. It was just a little much. If I have one regret it's that I'd have loved to get the health counter off of the portrait art altogether so I could give that some space, but I can't find a place for it that works better.

Pretty badly, it turns out! This is by no means my area of expertise, but my first year in the video games industry I was a UI artist and this feels familiar in a lot of ways. I guess ultimately in both cases you're trying to organize ways to clearly present information to the player.

Anyway, that experience prepared me for the fact that usually when you've designed to accommodate for a worst-case scenario things kind of fall apart as soon as you actually start plugging in actual data. All that is just to say it wasn't a surprise that it didn't look great.

If you’re thinking of watching K-Pop Demon Hunters you just need to ask yourself two questions: 1. Do I enjoy heartfelt storytelling paired with boundary-pushing animation? 2. Do I want the songs of a fictional k-pop band stuck in my head for the rest of my natural life?

Apparently I follow exactly enough ttrpg people to have a vague sense that discourse is happening without following enough ttrpg people to ever know exactly what the discourse is about.

Just finished my third week at a new job. It’s going to involve a lot more organization and management and a lot less hands-on animation - which I know I’ll miss - but it’s a fun project and an amazing team, and given the state of the industry super grateful not to be job-hunting still.

As usual I'm at the very forefront of new releases, but I finally got around to playing Gris, and man, what a lovely game. Beautiful art and animation, very polished controls, and you can finish it in an evening or two. Loved it so much I immediately played Neva, which is arguably even better.

I've been quiet on here because I have my head down job-hunting and also because the world is on fire, but I've been tweaking some of my animations and did a more extensive overhaul on this one. I think it's a big improvement!

I don't really care about football - hockey is my one true love - but it's very watchable, and I actually kind of miss going to superbowl parties. Unfortunately, since moving to Ontario all of the friends we've made also don't care about football, so it doesn't seem likely to happen.
