Disability benefits are back in the news, so it’s a good time clarify what Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is, and why it's so important to blind and partially sighted people. First things first, PIP isn't a luxury:

The UK Government is currently running the Timms Review of PIP. Reforms to disability benefits must recognise the reality of a person's extra costs and the vital role PIP plays.

We’re working hard to shape the review, so that PIP delivers accurate decisions on claims first time, reduces unnecessary reassessments, and understands the impact of being blind or partially sighted, treating people with dignity and respect.

Then there can be a need for support at home, extra lighting, specialist equipment and technology, and additional eye care expenses for complex glasses.

These are some of the additional expenses many people never have to think about, but for blind and partially sighted people they can be essential for maintaining independence, finding and staying in work and participating in everyday life.

PIP helps blind and partially sighted people meet unavoidable extra costs resulting from their disability. For example, costs might include use of public transport and taxis which can be of fundamental importance for someone's independence, health, education and work, and for social connections.

📢 Breaking! Prime Minister Andy Burnham has committed to fixing social care in England. As Government starts the conversation on how this happens, we must make sure lesser-known but vital types of social care for blind and partially sighted adults are part of it.

The independent Casey Commission on adult social care launched ‘The Big Conversation on Care’ on 29 July. This is an important chance to make our voice heard, and we'll update you on how we can contribute.

Andy Burnham talked about making “difficult decisions” about funding social care reforms. Vision rehabilitation makes financial as well as social sense.

Every £1 spent on early vision rehabilitation support can save the government up to £9.33, and it helps it meet its ambition of keeping more disabled people in work and economically active.

Vision rehabilitation, the focus of our Out of Sight campaign, is a hidden service, flying under the radar and plagued by ongoing delays, underfunding and staffing gaps.

But effective vision rehabilitation is life-changing – it supports blind and partially sighted people to thrive by developing the skills we need to keep ourselves safe, to find or stay in work, and live independently.
