this is probably the wrong place to ask, but with these extremely long AI proofs what’s to say that it isn’t easier for some hack to be found in the proof verification software than it is to solve these very hard math problems?

generating extremely long and hard to understand proofs is an interesting failure mode, when not worried about doom it is interesting to question what other things could go in. One of the ones that comes to mind for me again and again is that we just end up burying our ourselves..

Its interesting how often I go by an empty public pool in the GTHA. In Vancouver the pools are usually packed from morning to night and there are always activities going on. Big miss for Ontario on this one.

great when both sides of the political aisle can agree that fast, frequent rail is a universal good and there should be more of it where justified by ridership. plugging @fernkhahn.com's columbia rebuild concept that would allow full expo line service into surrey, making a newton branch feasible:

Finally being settled in a place where I'm probably not going to move for at least 10 years, really need to start getting those neighborhood friends going

That Vancouver transit being as good as it is has so much to do with right leaning politicians is a big part of why I find the left-right dynamic in much of transit discourse so exhausting.

Its funny, many decry politicians getting involved in planning, but in Metro Van the pols have saved Translink etc from themselves before. If not for ambitious politicians Vancouver would probably have light rail like Portland and Seattle (where 1/4 as many take the train each day)

Nobody ever thought that when Surrey dropped its big light rail plan that was only going to be marginally faster than the bus that they'd basically end up getting the same thing built a decade or two later - BUT AS METRO. Truly an amazing outcome on the horizon.

Worth noting that its the Conservatives pushing this forward, which follows the old pattern. Torontos light rail projects were largely advanced by the NDP. Its such an interesting dynamic because SkyTrain is clearly much better.

Its very sad to see activism on an issue I care about take the form of cheap pulling one over on the public that will probably not last, will generate a terrible backlash, and isn't even a reasonable path forwards.

Right, but I think the point he's making is that it's politically much easier to do this before the rollout of Waymo. A big waste of an opportunity if the city doesn't act. Certainly doesn't preclude wider congestion pricing down the line, if anything I'd say it lays the groundwork.

This is exactly why congestion pricing for them makes so much sense. Very low stakes up front but in the likely chance they become popular and more operators eventually come in you actually already have the policy lined up... It's like putting the lower deck on the bloor viaduct

Spencer Heckwolf@spencerheckwolf.bsky.social

Waymo’s will not have any type of meaningful share of total VMT anytime soon, if ever. It’s still below 5% in San Francisco. Waymo has little to no proof of concept in bad weather cities.

Anyone who thinks that Doug Ford would out of hand say no to congestion pricing should consider that waymos are going to be very visibly taking up road space from people driving in from the burbs.

With Waymo coming to Toronto now is the moment to talk congestion pricing. With a digital service like this you can do it without any cameras and charge a nominal fee for people entering the downtown core at certain times of day.

As automated vehicles become more and more prevalent this might eventually mean that you never have to apply a charge to private vehicles and yet most cars still have a congestion price on them. This should be combined with lots of new Transit priority and speed up measures.

Calling on Olivia Chow and Brad Bradford to seriously look at doing this and working with waymo and the province. I see no good reason for anyone to oppose this as it would leave us with funding for faster Transit, waymo, and reduce congestion pressure.

So many tech people seem to be moving to Japan or at least living their temporarily. Probably good for more people to be exposed to excellent trains.
