The Government™ has made an ad about all these protests happening around the world, and it’s surprisingly honest and informative.

At COP17 in Durban, the then Obama administration negotiator Todd Stern famously remarked "If equity’s in, we're out." It's a belief that underlies mitigation words said by rich country coalitions at climate talks. Because in practice, equitable action means the wealthiest emitters are in trouble

Dr. Aaron Thierry@thierryaaron.bsky.social

"The report, led by @kevinclimate.bsky.social from the @tyndallcentre.bsky.social, found that wealthy countries such as the #UK, #US and #Australia had until 2034 *to stop all oil and gas production* to give the world a 50% chance of preventing devastating climate breakdown"

If mitigation-related utterances at COPs by rich country coalitions actually meant equitable action, they would be on the hook first. But equity is a concept held in disdain, allowing wealthiest emitters the platform to speak about mitigation without facing the consequences of what equity means

Side-note: when I say "equitable action" I mean drastic and immediate action by *all* countries with the wealthiest doing the most the fastest. Contrary to other interpretations of equity as slow/delayed action

"The fossil fuel companies in which Swiss financial institutions are most heavily invested include oil majors such as Exxon ($8 billion), Shell ($5 billion) and Chevron ($4 billion)..."

Peter Bosshard@peterbosshard.bsky.social

Which country is holding the largest investments in fossil fuels per capita: the US? China? Saudi Arabia? None of the above – it’s in fact a small country with a large financial center. Details on my latest #SwissClimateRambles post swissclimaterambles.substack.com/p/the-worlds...

Just weeks before Türkiye hosts the world's countries for COP31, Carney goes to the country to pitch LNG. The PM is looking for buyers to support a growing gas market in Canada — clearly using the weight of government to boost a sector that must be phased out for climate commitments.

Kudos to NBC New York for saying it without equivocation: "The US is to blame for the world falling behind in the fight against climate change."

Another day, another step backward by a rich, historical emitter (the UK, in this case) framed in media as a blow to 'climate leadership' credentials. What climate leadership, exactly? These are the same countries that have long overshot their fair share of the carbon budget

Sometimes struggle to explain to international colleagues just how absurd Norwegian oil culture is. Well, Norway's energy minister recently encouraged petroleum companies to be more "horny for exploration" (letekåte) for more oil/gas. And this is treated as a completely normal thing to say.

Net-zero is a bad metric to track warming and climate action. Cumulative emissions determine global temperature rise, and not a target year when emissions = sink. Wish people, including those in government and at intergovernmental organisations like UNEP stopped using net-zero to measure progress

"Net-zero" is all the more problematic considering how messy sink calculations. Another grip: countries use various baseline years to track annual emissions increase/decline. It's fine at the country-level but when we're comparing at a global-scale, having a commonly-agreed baseline year would help

"To deliver the Paris commitment to keep warming well below 2°C requires global CO₂ emissions to fall by around 8% annually, starting immediately. The rate would be higher for the UK and other developed countries if the equity dimension of the Paris Agreement were taken seriously."

Jackdaw: a decision for last century. climateuncensored.com/jackdaw-a-de... A hastily drafted post following the UK Govt’s decision to approve further drilling & production at the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea. Please excuse typos, non-sequiturs, etc - I wanted to get the post online today.

Read this book to understand strategies of successful anti-colonial movements & the 'controversial' role of violence. Sharing because systemic violence (like violence by colonial powers and state violence, more generally) is often overlooked when portraying protestors or resistance forces as violent

It wasn’t just the apartheid government in South Africa that considered Mandela and the ANC terrorist organisations; countries like the United States and the United Kingdom did too.

This is a ridiculous and offensive thing to claim. They were crushed by a much more powerful force. That much more powerful force was not going to accept democracy in HK and it had nothing to do with protest tactics.

Sandy Hendry@sandyhendry.bsky.social

Hong Kong's democracy protests only started to fail when protesters started throwing bricks.

Now student protests in Indonesia. We are currently living through a unique moment in global affairs. "Students and activists protested across Indonesia over rising living costs, economic concerns and forest fires linked to land clearing for palm oil plantations." www.aljazeera.com/video/newsfe...

In Hungary, it was corruption. In India, it's the failure of job creation. These weren't the only reasons, but they were so big and so irrefutable, that they have collapsed trust in both the government and its media control mechanisms.

This works, until it doesn't. At some point reality pokes a hole through the gauze. In the US, UK, and EU, that reality has been Gaza. It has not just collapsed the credibility of the government but also the media that facilitated the lies. The control, the message discipline, evaporates

Will write a longer piece on this, but one of the deep facilitators of anti-democratic politics has been the consolidation of media ownership, and the bombardment of shocking and salacious "news" in the place of grounded journalism which shows how the powerful are acting.

Odd headline. Hi @newyorker.com, the cockroach protests are a glimmer of hope for the survival of democracy in India. Millions in the country are suffering under the weight of 12 years of gross incompetence and authoritarian tendencies of the Modi government. Peoples' power and protest = democracy

The New Yorker@newyorker.com

The Modi government has removed more than a hundred million people from voter rolls and is cracking down on a vigorous protest movement. www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a...
