I am sad, embarrassed, & apoplectic that — as we celebrate our nation’s 250th year since its founding — this ignorant, sloppy, abusive, egomaniacal, racist, misogynistic, criminal & fraud, is the person representing the country for which Washington was willing to risk everything. #Trump #america

“…some Massanello may hereafter arise, who laying hold of popular disquietudes, may collect together the desperate and the discontented, and by assuming themselves the power of government, may sweep away the liberties of the continent like a deluge.” -Thomas Paine, Common Sense

"The question of whether or not Congress should impeach and remove the president isn't a question for polling. It's not a question for political consultants. ... This is a battle for the soul of the country, a battle for its democracy, a battle for its constitution and a battle for the rule of law."

And here we are: the results of an election have been overturned. The vote — the voice of the American people — is now obsolete. What can we do, @marcelias.bsky.social? #virginia #VA #election #SCOTUS #gerrymander @democracydocket.com

Democracy Docket@democracydocket.com

NEW: In a 4-3 ruling, the Virginia Supreme Court overturned the results of a special election in which voters approved a new Democratic-led congressional map. It found the legislature violated procedural rules in passing a constitutional amendment to redistrict and placing it on the ballot.

“For America to be great, we must always remain one nation under God.” America didn’t begin as a nation under God and it is not under God currently. There’s nothing to remain adhered to. That’s why America’s great, because it exists without a metaphysical mandate. @ffrf.org #reason #secular

Prayer didn’t abolish slavery, secure women’s rights, defeat segregation, or expand civil liberties. People did that — through activism, reason, democracy, and constitutional protections. Progress comes from courageous action, not politicians staging prayer circles for cameras.

We have the RIGHT to pray, but not the right to claim prayer as a national identity. Our Deist founders would take serious issue with such claims that God gives rights to the American people. I suppose they’re not teaching such things in Louisiana public schools. #secular #firstamendment @ffrf.org

Today during the National 'Day of Prayer' observance at the U.S. Capitol, House Speaker Mike Johnson falsely claimed the rights of Americans come from “God Himself” and insisted that “we are a praying nation.” Read more ➡️ ffrf.us/4db59jc

The Confederacy didn’t end just because the Civil War did. The South relinquished their ambitions to secede, but never their anti-abolitionist, racist motivations. @atrupar.com #civilwar #civilrights #votingrights #votingrightsact #VRA #SCOTUS

"Looking back now, it’s clear that the desire to undo the Civil Rights Era — and even restore the Confederacy to a place of honor — never disappeared. It was sometimes set to the side and reshaped, but they kept the fire burning with unwavering attention."

Just imagine if an African American-majority state gerrymandered a map to dilute “non-Black” voters. @marcelias.bsky.social @democracydocket.com

Guns don’t kill people. But a White House without a ballroom and a subterranean bunker can. 🙄 @juliettekayyem.bsky.social @pbsnews.org

"I think the White House might make all of us take security more seriously if they did not politicize it within hours of an assassination attempt against the president," said Juliette Kayyem, homeland security expert and former assistant DHS secretary. https://to.pbs.org/4ehWH45

Allow me to translate: I’m going to back out soon, and by delivering the message early that it’s better to not make a deal, my sheep and Fox News will have a script to follow when, in the near future, they inevitably have to defend me and call the war a success, sans deal. @thebulwark.com

Trump on Iran: "Maybe we're better off not making a deal at all because we can't let this thing go on — been going on too long."

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com “One of the saddest and most disturbing realities of the second Trump administration is the gap between the administration’s Christian rhetoric and its corrupt and lawless actions,” our columnist David French writes.

Another abysmal decision by Hegseth. If he only knew a shred of military history (e.g., during the American Revolution, smallpox ravaged the Continental Army), he’d know that a healthy soldiery meant the difference between winning and losing. (Washington knew…) From @theatlantic.com’s March issue:

I’m glad importers and consumers have a process to request refunds, and I hope they receive them. But I want to know what the total cost will be for the taxpayers in cleaning up yet another Trump mess. What waste coming from an administration that claims a monopoly on government efficiency…
