You're shitting me. The "Rays" play in a stadium with a roof so low you get an automatic homer when you hit beyond the "C Ring"? What is this, whiffle ball in their mommy's backyard? (Go Crew.)

From my pen pal in Gaza: "For the past eight days, no vegetables or flour have entered Gaza. Today, I stood in a long queue for three hours, hoping to get a kilo of bread—but to no avail. We haven’t eaten bread for three days. Famine is slowly returning, my friend."

I'm watching the 2006 film "300" for research, because "conservative intellectuals" like Jonah Goldberg fetishized it as the cure for what aailed the American adventures in Iraq. And, holy shit, it's the gayest thing since Judy Garland.

(Don't sleep on the racism. The WHOLE TIME, they repeat how they're "fighting for freedom," which "isn't free," against an enemy depict as black enemy. Sparta was a literal slave society. It is endorsement of the Confederate definition of "freedom" as "whites gets their way with the blacks.")

The way they read it as propaganda to EXPAND the war into (to "defend against," people like Bill Kristol put it) Iran. A slogan back then: "Real men go to Tehran." Many, yes, took this movie seriously. That guy Goldberg most of all. But most of all, the thing that really grabs me:

Also, of course, fashy as fuck. The way the Persians are played by Black actors. The way it lets them fantasize that we're the UNDERDOGS in Iraq. (A sea of Asiatics could come at us any day...)

Under conditions of fascism, "polarization" is not bad. It is, in fact, imperative, lest government of the people, for the people, and by the people, not perish from this earth.

Collective deliberation leads to large, reductons in affective polarization Deliberation requires that people use good information to “weigh” competing arguments through civil and diverse discussion The impact was strongest among the most extreme www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

In 2026, I slag TNR for taking money from a union to publicly sponsor a special section about the midterm elections. Unions interested political parties. (@inthesetimes.com gets little labor money because their coverage of individual unions is unflinching, the better to serve the labor movement.)

Is it really possible to translate 2,000 year old poetry like this? Like: how can this not just be considered an original poem, inspired by, and shaped like, another in Latin?

After the crap that David Brooks wrote on the cusp of the Iraq War, no one should have published him anywhere again. Instead, it earned him a New York Times column.

Josh Marshall@joshtpm.bsky.social

I don’t care about brooks or what cush sinecure he has. He’s wrong. It’s a dumb point. And Collins campaign is literally stocked with Nazis. To any of this gate keeping tut tutting just stfu.

As a historian, I learn with my fingers, typing the most important words in what I read into notes as a way to literally embody the information. To tell an "AI" to answer a question, then proceed according to what it outputs, is the opposite: the lobotomization of thought.

The "SI" thing is was intended to provoke this exact sort of sniveling response from the courtiers, to train the oligarchs to humiliate themselves for Trump so they'll do it again later when it really matters.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

BAIER: The president says 'SI.' Are you into SI or AI? BEZOS: I do like SI, because 'artificial' is not a very flattering thing. Like, nobody wants an artificial sweetener, artificial flavoring.

A Hasidic Jew, with the sidecurls, hat, and everything, is being deported. For the alleged crime of antisemitism. For peacefully protesting Israel. Where he is a citizen; and to which he is being deported.

University of Michigan today. The most tipping-point image I've seen to exemplify our fascist descent. And the surrender was won with the weapon of false antisemitism charges against people protesting genocide--making administrations complicit in genocide. A moral nadir. This is how republics die.

Very important observations here. Important stuff to mentally assimilate if you think that Democrats getting many more votes than Republicans in November is the whole ballgame.

🧵One important thing about right-wing culture that people who have never been a part of it don't get is that to most Republican loyalists, their religion is America. They truly believe that the country's creators were directly inspired by God. To write critically of the founders is blasphemy.

Tommy Tuberville: Many airline pilots, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers are part of the furry community. It's terrifying.

May do.

On Friday, 9/26/2025, I went out to the ICE Detention Facility in Broadview for the first time. I was hit by a car, shot with baton rounds, tear gassed, and prosecuted for speaking out. On Friday, 9/25/2026, I will be back out at the ICE Detention Facility. I hope you will join me.

Spending these days fact-checking and endnoting, I've been Googling at industrial scale, which has given my a brain-melting lesson in how fucked we are as a civilization. In today's installment, a quote from Geo W. Bush's 2nd inaugural in 2005 is depicted—why not?—as one from Obama's in 2013.

A financial death star was assembled by the "rules based international order" to pin outlaw states, with the U.S. at the controls. Now it is being deployed by the outlaw running the U.S., against the "rules based international order." Aimé Césaire's imperial boomerang. www.wsj.com/politics/pol...
