The Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Houston seek a Assistant Professor in Neuroimmunology. We’re a large and highly collaborative department, close to the Texas Medical Center. Please join us! Apply here (#496899): careers.uh.edu/jobs/assista...

We generated chromosome scale assemblies of house flies with different Y chromosomes. You won't believe what happened next!

X-Y divergence of house fly (Musca domestica) proto-sex chromosomes follows distinct evolutionary trajectories despite residing in the same genome https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2026.09.26.754726v1

If only I were a marine biologist ... Colon in the tidal: the lower digestive tract of coastal aquatic mammals

How do people feel about "colon titles" for science articles? I find them increasingly gimmicky and often vacuous. I recommend against them to students and mentees but maybe I am too old-school?

We have an old thermal cycler in my lab that we won't use for PCR (because oil), but it makes a great insect heat torture device

Mike Feigin 🥯@mikefeigin.bsky.social

It’s hard to relate to people who never used mineral oil for PCR.

The US President's new proposal to tax international students has been approved by the White House for release this week. It's an unprecedented $100,000 tax on int'l grads who stay to work after graduation on Optional Practical Training (most grads do), a crucial bridge to remaining by any channel.

The university of Houston -victoria became texas a&m-victoria. Texas a&m then fired the faculty who live in Houston and didn't want to drive to Victoria. Where is Victoria? 2 hrs from Houston, about the same distance from San Antonio, and closer to corpus Christi.

Making university faculty sit in their offices from 8 am to 5 pm every day, 5 days a week, is insane and serves no conceivable academic purpose. The fact that admins and even *staff* are exempt from this absurd requirement shows the real goal is to make tenured faculty quit.

Officially recruiting postdocs at GW. If you are interested in genetic novelty, structural variation, or evo genetics please get in touch! We have data sets on mulitple organisms with large population sizes (Drosophila, Megalonaias nervosa) and species in decline (fireflies, mussels, elephants).

Very excited about this special issue! Our goal is to bring together empirical and theoretical work across a wide range of “unusual” systems of aging. Sounds like a good fit? Consider submitting to our SI 🤩 Unsure? Feel free to contact us. And please spread the word!

Working on ageing in unusual taxa? Consider submitting to our Special Issue on the Journal of Evolutionary Biology: "Ageing outside of the box: insights from unusual and non-model species". Reptiles with longer Wikipedia pages tend to be bigger. The relationship is a power law with exponent = 0.85. I guess humans really like writing about big lizards? The longest article is the Komodo Dragon.

Many of us were taught experiments are for testing hypotheses. In Ch 1 of Experimentology, our free, open methods textbook, my coauthors and I argue differently: experiments are for estimating the magnitude of causal effects. This reframing has important consequences. 🧵 experimentology.io
