A quick first step to impose a personal tariff on US companies: Switch away from using Google as your phone’s search engine. Boycott US products where possible and let’s show them what isolation will be like. Settings > Apps > Safari > Search engine > Ecosia

Be awesome, just like Margaret Hamilton. Rest in Peace.

ah damn, RIP Margaret Hamilton. she took safety-critical software engineering seriously, and got people to the moon and back. news.mit.edu/2026/margare...

Cars have killed somewhere in the region of 80 million people since invention, but somehow people still manage to get more annoyed with cyclists.

So apparently another internet company can tell your provider that you’re leaving when you’re not. And when you phone your provider and they stop this, the first company can overwrite this and get you cut off anyway. And then you’re on hold endlessly and waiting for your internet to be restored.

Never before has a politician announced their intention to run for re-election on an explicitly pro-sleaze, anti-transparency ticket. Never before has a politician gloried in having enriched themselves by breaking the rules, and then demanded a mandate to continue doing so indefinitely

bylinetimes.comNigel Farage’s 'Pro-Sleaze' By-Election Is A Sign Of Terminal WeaknessThe Reform leader's desperate decision to call a back-me-or-sack-me by-election is a sign of a politician who knows he is finally being exposed for the man he really is, argues Adam Bienkov

This is an absolute scandal. Student loans should be replaced by something far closer to what was believed to be sold, with reductions in the loan based on a fair view of the repayments made.

Rachel Cunliffe@rmcunliffe.bsky.social

So it turns out the "contract" teenagers signed for their student loans wasn't actually a contract at all, the government always had the right to retrospectively change the terms, and at no point was this explained to those taking out the loans... www.newstatesman.com/politics/edu...

Who the fuck rounds up nuns for imprisonment, exile or exportation? Oh yeah, that's right, fucking nazi's.

And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife And you may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here?"

Disagree with lots of this, including the central argument, but it's very thoughtful. The best single idea in it is this: "Any platform that uses an algorithm more complex than ‘people you follow in chronological order’ to be treated as a publisher, and held to account for content."

The social media ban doesn’t have to stop every under 16 from using social media - if it stops most of them using it, and causes those who still do to use it less, that's a big win. 10 responses to common objections to the ban. www.edrith.co.uk/p/social-med...

If Muslims or members of the Asian and Black community had set fire to white people’s homes with children running for their lives, do you think we would be discussing legitimate concerns or focussing on who radicalised them and ideological and contributing cultural factors?

I do wish the University of Derby would stop advertising at Loughborough station. It’s extremely panicking for people travelling in a lovely beer stupor from London.

So there are crazy headlines, and then there are "I'm sorry WTAF now?" headlines...😳 Yes, the Telegraph have deduced that Ed Miliband hates mothers because of some new legislation making tumble dryers more efficient and cheaper to run! 🧵 1/24

Yes @helenrumbelow.bsky.social, that’s the point. If you want to drive fast and risk death (ideally your own, not pedestrians’) then go to a track day. 20 zones are there because drivers continue to ignore the impact of their selfish behaviour on others. Maybe switch to cycling for a while, Helen.

And that is why it’s called Good Friday. I’ve felt ropey all day, Saints were three scores down and get four tries in the last 10 minutes against the pies. Woohoo!

Now this does seem steep for building a bike path. But the reporting is hilarious. Stress from a 10 minute driving detour. Counting to 11 on one hand. It is, of course, not being funded by the council despite the misleading headline.

I guess if I ran the transport for one of the few EU countries without a rail link to the airport from the capital; without decent cycle or walking infrastructure, in a car clogged pollution nightmare, this is the kind of badly researched ill-informed nonsense I’d be expected to produce.

15 minute cities. No conspiracy, just nice to have things nearby.

Emma Monk@monkemma.bsky.social

What is a 15-min City? A term coined by urban planner Carlos Moreno, a professor at Sorbonne University, in 2016 It is how towns and cities evolved before cars were invented. People lived, worked, and socialized in their local vicinity. Everything they needed day to day was easily accessible 2/

These so-called "patriotic" 🇬🇧newspapers who brought you Brexit were never really patriotic at all. They are driven by a disdain for Britain's European neighbours, and a fawning obsession with America. They do not really want 🇬🇧 to be sovereign. They're content being a 🇺🇸vassal.

Got up from the UK to watch the Seahawks. What is it with this need for a national anthem and worship of the military before a match? Not a great look after an illegal invasion. Just kick the game off, FFS.

What an incredible shame.

Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

I’m old enough to remember when the US published a security doctrine that claimed the EU didn’t have freedom of expression.

An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Once again, bike lanes are good for business

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

It’s really important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of ACTUAL EVIDENCE that they’re better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced. Safe bike-lanes mean business.
