Maya's death is activating legislators in New Jersey, a state with zero homeschool oversight. Anti-regulation groups are saying Maya was not truly homeschooled - but in a state like New Jersey, where there's no notification to homeschool, the only measurement we have is policy that left her behind.

We'd like to introduce homeschooling to the conversation, @propublica.org- it's really easy over here, too. Only 4 states require a high school diploma, and in 11 states, you never need to notify anyone about your intention to homeschool. We need to #makehomeschoolsafe, and private schools too.
From classroom to homeschool - and back again. We're seeking classroom educators to share their experiences with students transitioning between homeschooling and traditional school settings; please click below to participate. georgetown.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_...
Our virtual alumni groups, led by @healingkind.bsky.social, are a critical part of our mission. Beau wrote about those groups here ⬇️
It's back to school season, but more children than ever aren't headed back to the classroom. Read our team's research brief about the changing demographics of homeschoolers in the United States: shorturl.at/xLLjs
The powerhouse behind CRHE's research, Dr. Jonah Stewart, shared his background and why his work now is so critical with our friend @thejacobgooden.bsky.social over at the Ex Homeschooler's Club podcast. Take a listen! ⬇️
"...most protections against child maltreatment developed in partnership with public education. Removing a child from a traditional school setting means removing them from those protections as well." @nbc4i.com talked to CRHE about Ohio's homeschool laws - superintendentsare concerned as well.
Ryan was a fierce advocate for children’s safety. Like many in our field, we are saddened to hear of Ryan Stollar’s passing, and are sitting with the complexities this news brings. More here -> crhe.org/statement-on...

Great op-ed from Jo Anderson, homeschool alum ⬇️
"...difficult to measure is the degree to which children may be isolated and vulnerable to mistreatment at home. That is a focus of advocates for more home-schooling regulation, like the Coalition for Responsible Home Education, an American outfit where many staff were home-schooled themselves." ⬇️
In the wake of the pandemic, more parents are home-schooling their children
Grateful to @ameliaschonbek.bsky.social for giving Raylee's Law a national platform- these stories matter 💙
A high-profile bill known as Raylee’s Law, which West Virginia lawmakers have struggled with for years, has inspired legislation passed by the Nebraska Legislature, reports @amelianews.bsky.social.

As a progressive homeschooling parent, the "parental rights" framing drives me nuts. I don't homeschool my kids because it is my right against the government. It's a way to help them learn about themselves and grow in a cooperative community. Safeguards do not impede that goal at all
“What is lost in the endless outrage cycle of parents versus government is the rights of children themselves and where responsibility lies for protecting them. It is entirely possible—and historically consistent—to support both robust parental freedom and reasonable public safeguards.”
@nebpublicmedia.bsky.social talked to us about LB1224, @meganhunt.bsky.social's massive step forward in responsible homeschooling ->

We recently sat down with Josh Newman to discuss the complexities of homeschooling. Listen here:
Stefan Merrill Block was pulled from school to be homeschooled in the fourth grade, but his parents didn't provide him any formal education. His new memoir, Homeschooled, details his mother's warped idea of home education.

No education modality is free of abuse and neglect; children are impacted in public school and in the homeschool setting. It’s not an either/or question, it’s a both/and answer. Support our critical work at crhe.org/support-crhe/

Why do you think homeschooling is on the rise? We talked to Newsweek about the challenges of collecting data within the realm of homeschooling and capturing the whole picture, but there’s no denying more and more families are choosing to homeschool. Let us know what you think!

Homeschooling is on the rise in VA, and the need for oversight in that state (and across the US) is rising too. The VCU Capital News Service published this piece in the Virginia Mercury. We were grateful to contribute context, experiences, and recommendations for homeschooled kids.
In North Carolina, we’re confronted with another horrific case of child abuse, neglect and fatality where homeschooling was used to isolate and disappear children from a community network. We mourn Leah, Zoe, Wellington, and Sean: www.newsobserver.com/news/local/e...
