This campus is home to a university, but also to the little ones at the preschool, the girls at Julia Morgan, & the faculty and workers who keep it all running. That is why I was proud to secure over $1 million in Federal Community Project funding for Mills College at Northeastern University.

This funding will invest in the simple things that make a place safe: light, open paths, and updated equipment like call booths. Safety is a public good, and that is exactly the kind of investment Oakland deserves.

This week, I stood with the workers of SEIU 1000 as they fought for better contract terms. In Congress, I am committed to protecting the right to organize and will continue to fight to advance labor protections and collective bargaining rights at the federal level.

This week, I hosted my first Annual Mayors Luncheon with mayors from all seven cities in CA-12 to hear directly from them about the needs of each city. I also shared the work I am doing in Congress to protect our immigrant neighbors, fight for healthcare, advance disability justice, & more.

I am proud to work with incredible local elected partners who represent our communities so well, and we will continue to work hand in hand to ensure that the East Bay has the federal and local resources that our neighbors deserve and need to thrive.

As the first congenitally blind member of Congress, advocating for disability justice and racial justice are at the forefront of everything I do. At a time when our civil rights are under attack, these conversations could not be more important.

I am thankful to work alongside such powerful fighters in Mayor Ishii and Supervisor Fortunato Bas who understand the value of drawing on lived experience to advocate and work for our communities in the East Bay.

Over the past few months, the Trump Administration has been working behind the scenes to reinterpret portions of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and the Olmstead v. L.C. decision - all of which protect the rights and dignity of people with disabilities.

I have been closely monitoring their actions, demanding answers, holding Republicans accountable, & working to advance legislation to protect people with disabilities. As the first congenitally blind member of Congress, this fight is personal to me. I will always fight for the disability community.

It was powerful to be in community in Oakland to honor the enduring legacy of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. The Panthers started a movement that laid a blueprint for collective liberation that we're still following today - the fight for housing, food security, education, & justice.

This week near Bethlehem, Israeli forces declared a Palestinian olive grove a closed military zone and detained roughly ninety volunteers, among them dozens of American citizens and rabbis, who had come to help farmers harvest trees they had been kept from for three years.

npr.orgIsrael detains then frees dozens of Americans, including Congress nominee, in West BankDemocratic congressional candidate Brad Lander along with dozens of American and Israeli rabbis and activists were helping Palestinian olive harvesters when they were detained by Israeli forces.

Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. Yet Palestinians citizens continually face displacement, detention, and death in the West Bank. Our country’s and international law holds for every government or they hold for none.

As we see increased ICE activity and arrests across California, I - along with our local elected officials and community groups - remain steadfast in our commitment to protect our neighbors, our civil rights, and the dignity of all people who contribute to our communities.

This administration is spreading fear & trying to deter people from leaving their homes, including to vote. But our community in the East Bay is strong, we support one another, we protect one another. For more information about your rights and how to protect yourself and others visit my website.

This resolution recognizes the persistent pay disparity between disabled women and both disabled and nondisabled men, and reaffirms the need to reduce systemic, economic barriers and advance economic equity for disabled women.

As the first congenitally blind member of Congress, I know the pay inequities that Black and brown disabled women face. This fight is personal for me, and I am using every tool available to me to fight for the pay, dignity, and support that the disability community deserves.

Our public schools are one of the most important investments we can make in our communities and in Oakland's future. That is why I was honored to meet with educators and leaders from Oakland Unified School District recently.

As the Trump Administration dismantles the Department of Education - I am working in Congress to bring federal resources back to our communities and to ensure that federal policy reflects what Oakland families are actually experiencing.

Because I know that when we support Oakland public schools, students, and teachers, we are investing in young people who will become Oakland’s next teachers, artists, small-business owners, innovators and community leaders.

As a member of the House Small Business Committee, I am proud to be a partner to Mayor Ashcraft and local officials to deliver federal resources for Alameda's families, small businesses, and innovators who make Alameda a prosperous community and home to so many.

Spring 2027 internship applications for my district and D.C. offices are now open. If you are a college student, graduate student, or recent grad with a passion for public service, we would love to have you on Team Simon! Head to our website for full position descriptions and application info.

I'm proud to have secured $1 MILLION in federal funding for the East Bay Regional Park District to update the MLK Jr. Regional Shoreline and advance environmental equity, build new green spaces, and improve our shorelines. Last week, I joined Park District staff to break ground on the project.

The project will provide new recreational spaces along the Oakland Estuary with picnic spaces, a multi-use lawn, restroom facilities, & a play area for children. I cannot wait to see how this federal funding helps create space for community and improve the health and wellbeing of East Bay residents.

60 years ago this week, Bobby Seale & Huey Newton sat down at Merritt College in Oakland & penned the Ten Point Program, establishing the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. They birthed a movement for liberation & self determination that started in Oakland & spread to every corner of this nation.

Today, 60 years later, we carry the legacy of the Panthers and continue to work to ensure that everyone has food, housing, and education, to resist oppression, and to spread education and opportunity. Today, tomorrow, always, all power to the people.

Latino Heritage Month ends today. The fight does not. This is Ohlone land. Luis María Peralta spent forty years as a soldier for the Spanish Crown, leading expeditions against the Native people of this bay and returning those who fled the missions.

Latino physicians, builders, teachers, business owners, organizers and artists are central to the tapestry that built this land. To our Latino neighbors this fall: you do not have to open the door without a signed judicial warrant. You do not have to answer questions.

If agents come to your block, call the Alameda County ACILEP rapid response line at 510-241-4011 and trained observers will come. Keep your children in school, keep your businesses open, and know your voice is always needed.

In 1820, Spain rewarded him with 44,800 acres of land, everything from San Leandro to Albany. Over the next 60 years, American squatters took that land & named it Oakland. This city was founded on land stolen twice. The Mexican families who were here before the border moved never left.

In 1970, the Chicano Moratorium marched down Fruitvale Avenue, and out of that movement and the civil rights movement came La Clínica de la Raza, Centro Legal, the Unity Council, and the institutions that still hold this district up.

I was honored to sit down with leaders in the disability space at the Disability & Philanthropy Forum at the Ed Roberts Center in Berkeley for a discussion on the intersection of disability justice and philanthropy.

We must work together utlizing legislative, organizing, & advocacy to increase funding for disability-related programs, policies, & projects. Everyone deserves reources, dignity, & care - & I am doing everything in my power as a Member of Congress to support and protect the people with disabilities.

With community health centers already facing devastating cuts under Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill, depleting this critical funding reserve without a plan to replenish it is reckless and puts access to care at further risk.
