It’s time for a change. Right now I’m legally altering my gender to non-binary. I'm already blessed with an unusual and androgynous first name – Redfern – but my middle name is masculine. So from now on I’ll be known as “Redfern Barrett” – or “Red” to friends. My new website is redfernbarrett.com

My article on non-binary gaming just came out in Mothership! "The child version of Redfern could never have imagined a Street Fighter game where they got to build their own character from scratch, let alone one who was neither a man nor a woman" Read it here: www.mothership.blog/all-the-choi...

This is a really personal piece, detailing my childhood as a weird enby kid, my queer teen years, and my adulthood, all through the lens of the games I played 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

Had a haircut, ate a healthy lunch, and started a new flash story – enjoying a silvery start to my week! And no, I’m not talking about the greys in my beard…

Just as a heads up: if your political comments include "haha this man I don't like is gay!" or "this woman I don't like is trans!" you're not actually the cool progressive you think you are.

Instead of the scenarios seen in 2001, Terminator, and Blade Runner, we actually needed to be warned about a world where true AI hasn’t been invented, but millions of people believe that it has and start projecting all sort of weird feelings onto chatbots.

It’s finally happening! Today I’m legally changing my gender to non-binary. I feel the strangest mix of nervous, satisfied, grateful, and excited. I still can’t quite believe it. Wish me luck! 💞 #nonbinary #berlin

How was this only two months ago? I need another vacation already…

On a much needed birthday vacation to the Canary Islands! Usually my partner Ismar and I go on a city break, exploring cafes and museums – so a lazy stay by the pool is something completely different! 🌈

Future students will study the early-21st century “Marvelization” of writing and how it’s infected media. Entire books, movies, and games filled with glib millennial characters whose inner depth extends to pithy one-liners and one-dimensional motives. It has to end at some point. It has to.

Of course “generative AI” gains ground when so much highly-visible writing reads like it was written by robots anyway. How are those outside the arts supposed to tell the difference?

So many "complete" and "anniversary" editions of games are terrible for anyone trying it for the first time. 1. You're given overpowered weapons, ruining the pace of the early game 2. You're bombarded with DLC missions, overwhelming you from the start Why not include a "classic" mode for newbies?!

Why did I arrange to go to a flea market at 9:30am? It’s far too early to be awake on a Sunday! Sometimes I think Past Me makes plans specifically to punish Future Me…

Enjoying an unexpectedly gorgeous autumn day here in Berlin! Sweaters, sunshine, and a gentle breeze. It’s this enby’s favourite time of year. 🍂

"The ferocity of Barrett’s imagination gives the middle finger to regressive authors like JK Rowling with colourful characters and impressive world-building." – Andrea Birmingham on my novel PROUD PINK SKY, for Siegessäule

This is how I got my short-story hit today. I found both authors’ works cathartically heartbreaking, honestly earned.

It’s weird to me that slopsters don’t get the fact that if everyone is an “artist” then no one is. Nor do they understand that if something is ubiquitous, it holds no value. People appreciate artists because of the effort and skill it takes. They like artworks precisely *because* they’re special.
