Thank you to everyone involved in bringing the campaign together and to the organisations across Salford and Greater Manchester working every day to support our young people.

... helping to tackle the root causes of violence. It was inspiring to hear directly from young people about the importance of youth spaces, community organisations and the opportunities they provide.

Salford City Council is asking residents to help shape the future of supported and specialist housing across our city. The consultation covers housing for older people, disabled residents, people recovering from homelessness, survivors of domestic abuse and others who need extra support.

Really good to meet with Salford Students’ Union officers and University of Salford leadership today to discuss the cost of living, student healthcare, retaining graduates in Greater Manchester, and the future of tuition fees. Thanks to everyone for such a constructive conversation.

Great to be at the launch of the Thunder Netball Foundation at Buile Hill Academy today. I saw some of the amazingly talented pupils in action who will benefit from the Foundation's work. Their enthusiasm and determination were inspiring.

That's why it's so encouraging to see a new charity dedicated to creating funded and affordable opportunities for children and young people, while helping to tackle health inequalities and improve wellbeing across our communities.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in making the Foundation a reality. I look forward to seeing the positive difference it will make for young people across Salford and beyond.

He was a true Salford legend and he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Bill. My love and prayers are with his wife Margaret, his daughters and grandchildren (who he loved so much and was so very proud of) his family and friends and at this difficult time.

That’s what he did, he lifted people up so many people, those from working class back grounds with the fire in their bellies for a better world but who weren’t part of the political machine with friends in high places.

A life long campaigner he was instrumental in both the Labour party and Unite the Union in the north west: from actively supporting the miners strike in Salford to standing up for pensioners and fighting cuts to the winter fuel allowance.

A true Salford giant, he will be remembered not only for his public service to our city, but for his lifelong commitment to the Labour Party, the trade union movement and the support he gave to generations of Labour members, Unite activists and shop stewards.

Huge thanks to all of our officers re-elected at the APPG for State Pension Inequality for Women at yesterday's AGM and special thanks to all members of the group who have been working hard all year to secure justice for 1950s born women.

These figures are shocking. 72% of ground staff and 71% of cabin crew report verbal abuse at least every month. Even more alarming, 31% of ground staff and 42% of cabin crew say they have experienced physical assault. No worker should face abuse simply for doing their job. 1/2

Salford has another award winner! A huge congratulations to the brilliant team at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, who've been crowned Best Medium Museum at the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Awards! 1/3

From exploring the Victorian street to dressing up, getting creative and enjoying hands-on activities, it's wonderful to see our much loved museum recognised for making history, art and culture fun and accessible for the whole family. 2/3

Government partnerships with the hospitality sector to get young people into work is hugely welcome. And whilst most employers in the sector have brilliant records on keeping staff safe and treating them with respect reports of bullying and harassment in a select few should not go overlooked. 1/2

No young worker should have to face bullying, sexual harassment or discrimination at work. I raised this in Parliament and asked the Government to make sure proper safeguards are in place for young people taking up these new opportunities. 2/2

Salford's greatest strength has always been its people. As part of our centenary celebrations, community groups, charities and organisations making a real difference to local lives have been recognised through the Centenary Awards. 1/2

From supporting young people to strengthening communities and boosting civic pride, these organisations represent the very best of Salford. Congratulations to everyone recognised for their contribution to our city! Read more from @SalfordNow www.salfordnow.co.uk/2026/10/16/c... 2/2

Economic growth means little if working people don't see the benefits. That's why I welcome Greater Manchester's decision to link support from the Good Growth Fund to higher employment standards, helping promote fair pay, secure work and opportunities for progression. 1/2

Too often, investment is measured in pounds spent and buildings built. What matters is whether it improves life for local people. Growth should mean better jobs, better wages and better opportunities for communities across Salford.

On my way into work I dropped by to support @nujofficial.bsky.social members at The Lancet taking strike action. The staff behind one of the world's most respected medical journals deserve fair pay for their vital work. Despite huge profits staff have seen their pay fall in real terms. Solidarity ✊

Our members at The Lancet, one of the world’s leading medical journals, will go on strike again from Monday to Wednesday to demand fair pay for their work. Messages of support can be sent to: campaigns@nuj.org.uk #SolidarityForScience

While The Lancet's owner, Elsevier, made over £1 billion in adjusted operating profit last year, its workers have seen their pay fall in real terms. As Chair of the NUJ Parliamentary Group, I stand shoulder to shoulder with members demanding a fair deal. 2/3

Brilliant to see Salford’s historic Cheering Fusilier restored to its former glory. A huge thank you to Salford Council and everyone involved in getting the plinth repaired so quickly, with a special thanks to Michelle Lindsey for helping make it happen.

As it's British Beauty Week, I popped down the road to Vintage Nails where I had an amazing job done on my nails done by the lovely Connie. Beauty and personal care businesses contribute £28.3bn to our economy, lots of them independent, and bring a little bit of joy into our lives.

Really sad to hear about the death of Councillor Pat Karney. Pat was a true Manchester giant. A legendary institution in his own right who deeply loved his city and community. He will be sorely missed. Sending deepest condolences and prayers to his family and friends.

Every eligible state secondary school in Salford will receive new Government funding for books, ebooks, audiobooks and other reading materials, with extra weighting towards schools serving more disadvantaged communities. 1/2

Schools will receive between £450 and £1,400 automatically, without having to apply. Reading opens doors, builds confidence and gives young people access to new ideas and opportunities. A child’s access to books should never depend on what their family can afford. 2/2
