My standing search on the phrase "stochastic parrots" regularly turns up people labeling it a "thought-terminating cliché". I think maybe they're right, but not the way the think they are: >>

*This must be the boldest public statement that I've ever read in my life. Your scheme is bigger than the Industrial Revolution plus the Internet, and it's happening right now, and you need 2 trillion!? *It's like Victor Frankenstein crowns himself as Napoleon

It must be terrifying to be the Finance Minister to this particular PM, who is the former head of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.

I think it is strange that we did not have a huge media retrospective in 2022 on the Turing Test. It is normal now to have machines which cause people to fall into delusions because they are so believable, but we never took a moment collectively to reflect on that barrier being passed.

At long last, we have created the largely inert and harmless AI that doesn't really want anything from the classic sci-fi novel If You Happen To Create A Largely Inert And Harmless AI Without Wants Or Autonomy, Stop! Take A Victory Lap! Don't Give It Wants Or Autonomy! Our work has only just begun.

All those men in their bulletproof vests to attack a sacred tree??! Even if the tree was not sacred. What!!? You're suiting up to attack a tree, what is it going to do to you??

The Trump administration’s actions resulted in the destruction of the largest ancient Cottonwood tree on Indigenous territory in Arizona. This tree, known as the “Grandmother Tree,” was 250 years old.

(Setting aside the fact that next-token prediction will remain a completely ridiculous way to do arthimetic: inefficient and unreliable, where we've had mini-solar-cell powered calculators for literal decades.) >>

It is all just autocomplete and the market will crash. I've noticed that anyone who claims this has been "refuted" also happens to use it regularly, and I have never seen anyone formulate a coherent, rational argument proving it was not autocomplete that was not just gesturing to the usage.

i think that like 95-99% of the "it's just autocomplete and all the reports of ai capabilities are actually psychosis" people will preference cascade to a state of panic over the next 9 months. similar to early covid dynamics.

The point is not that the machine is not capable. Structurally it is capable of all kinds of things. The point is that an informed mathematical and linguistic opinion is that this is *how it works* Those are two very different things

I unfortunately can think of no other way to read a graph of Glass Beads, or any use for a graph of Glass Beads, than to use the glyphs to isolate positions where a single statement, or set of statements, will have significant meanings in multiple languages and/or contexts.

I for one would really like it to be once in a lifetime, but it's been twice already, and hopefully no more

Thoughts, on a syntax of Beads which are an entity-relationship graph structure. The edges could be typed, forming triples of Beads, where each Bead is a URI which creates an SVG and records provenance metadata, timestamp. This means you can write knowledge graphs in RDF with the Glass Beads

Furthermore, the "phonology" of a Bead language are the letters used to compose a bead. The "morphology" are the semantics (usually Boolean) which compose a (potentially recursive) Glass Bead. The "syntax" is a knowledge graph written in RDF

Can now make volvelles with an infinite number of sections, but they do not yet parse the vector space with fuzzy logic semantics. Hence only retrieving the top level entity. I did not make this Wikipedia2Vec dataset, but the USA is top level

Could there be a better example connecting the multiple strands of my research over the past fifteen years? Zuckerberg, you've done it again.

Rememver: the British Empire did not exist. It manifested through a whole complicated heap of officials and settlers and colonies and colonised and dominions and ideas, but at root there was no Imperial Government or military or civil service, just whole lot of competing, contradictory, entities.

Doctor Charlton Cussans PhD@charltoncussans.bsky.social

As I explained to my students recently up until 1946 you had the incredibly ideologically and practically loose and flexible concept of "British Subject" and it was the Canadians who switched things up by creating the concept of Canadian Citizen.
