Hey everyone - Fark’s running an October subscription drive. We’re a bit short of our goal and could use a boost. fark.com/subscribe If you sign up for TotalFark this week you’ll get a special SOON badge. When “It Happens” the “SOON” badge will change to “It Happened!” Here are the two badges:

It turns out that Canada's federal privacy law, PIPEDA, generally doesn't cover nonprofits when they're conducting noncommercial activities. Now, some provinces, including BC, have their own privacy laws that DO cover nonprofits. But protections vary across Canada. 3/7

The Government™ has made an ad about all these protests happening around the world, and it’s surprisingly honest and informative.

Well crap. I just happened to glance at a headline and apparently I now owe all my future income to a media outlet in Georgia.

Well this is eleventy-million kinds of Fucked Up. @latimes.com (who once contracted with me as a freelance reviewer and whom I struggled to get paid by) asserts that *merely reading its website* constitutes a permanent waiver of your right to sue it under *any circumstances*.

Today's lesson Stop using outdated guidance on setting up M365 admin breakglass accounts. Do not exclude them from MFA. Do use dual enrolled FIDO2 keys stored in a safe.

We're aware of a phishing attack that has compromised more than 4,500 accounts. The attack spread through posts promoting a fake offer of a government payment. We have temporarily suspended the compromised accounts and are working with their owners to secure them and restore access.

Well said.

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

The only way to make sense of what Bezo said, in light of reality, is to understand that he does not see reverse centaurs as human. Humans, to him, are other ultra wealthy beings. No one else qualifies. The rest of us? Part of his machine.

This thread has some great feels, as do the comments. Take a few minutes and cleanse your doomscrolling?

I’ve been paying more attention to sunrises and sunsets lately. That has been intentional. I just find something about first and last light of day to be tranquil and calming. It isn’t so much the sunrise or sunset itself. It’s the act of being present in the observation of the world as it is. 1/

I've held this account for nearly as long as Sirius existed as a service, from before the merger with XM. But I cannot tolerate what they are doing now.

This is one of the most articulate and clear musings on ethics, law and responsibility for high tech I've seen this year. Thread 🧵

Some morning musings on AI. We need to stop talking about this as technology issue. It's an ethics & law enforcement issue. Thread:

It never ceases to amaze me that the sort of men who claim women are too impulsive and emotional to be leaders are the same ones who swear sober men become completely incapacitated in reason and empathy in the presence of a drunk woman.

Bit of a milestone reached this last weekend. Sitting at 140 ish books completed during the streak, not quite a book per week.

I had planned to see Ed Sheeran in Philadelphia this weekend, but given the current issues, I cancelled my hotel and travel. I don't understand how he hasn't cancelled the appearance given the obvious physical safety concerns, no openers, and no backing band. What a chump. He's lost a fan.
