As a mathematician who refuses to use AI, I get asked "but what if AI cures cancer?" Answers 1) AI has so far murdered and harmed an incredible nu,ber of people in a variety of ways 2) cancer isn't one disease, progress is incremental 3) if my gran had wheels she would have been a tram

"But the preferred option comes with a price tag of more than half a billion." Oh no! We couldn't possibly run hourly trains between two of the North Island's three biggest cities for a price tag as steep as *checks notes* 1/7th the cost of a motorway to save a few minutes on the drive to Northland

I have a silly election question: how many seats do they physically have in parliament? Assuming it's not literally the same as the amount of "seats" ie MPs? Like, they must have some spares, right? Could a sufficiently large overhang mean they'd have to refit the chamber?

traaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiinnnnns 🚆 Also new stations in "Ngāruawāhia, Te Kauwhata, Pōkeno and Tūākau" would be mint As much as I like Frankton, pleased to see them recognise that the current station location limits demand.

None of us should forget this. Meta should be subjected to corporate death penalty and permanently broken up into small pieces.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Effective Altruism is at its core a hyperindividualist fantasy, one that presupposes knowing better than the rest of us. Systemic causes of suffering — capitalism especially — are ignored in favour of becoming the optimal utilitarian Batman; joining the very bourgeoisie who created this mess.

Tbh even if there were so many people in prison that allowing prisoners the right to vote *would* significantly change the election outcome... Wouldn't we want it to? A prison population that high would mean the state had deeply failed. Change would be necessary.

Exhausting that sexual violence is only ever an election issue for the purposes of cheap, performative dunks. Why can't we talk about properly funding ACC and access to shelters and wraparound support for victims? Treating so many people's pain like disposable political prop is really abhorrent.

When political scientists first raised concerns about this new restriction last year we were told we were being ‘alarmist’ to suggest tilting the playing field unfairly like this by one party can undermine the legitimacy of the election out come for all Kiwis in a tight race I’m still ‘alarmed’…

Last day! NZ National restricted general roll voting regulations for the first time in 40 yrs To reporters please don’t repeat spin- the change won’t speed up counting - And let’s not shrug & say just 2% fewer voters enrolled It’s 300,000 NZers prevented from voting That’s an entire NZ town

Lots of "politicians and gangs" in the election news. For completeness, I'd like to see "politicians and people who believe great replacement theory", "politicians and extremely conservative religions", "politicians and pedophiles who were the head of the party and had that fact suppressed" too.

Have to agree. Honestly ME2 had very little going on plot-wise. The characters were great! But in terms of story, there wasn't much "there" there. It suffers from being the middle child, the plot primarily serves to build tension to be resolved in a sequel, so it can only move in one direction.

With all the political doom and gloom circulating at the moment, I think it pays to remind ourselves: The goal of this FUD from the right wing and media oligarchs is for us to believe that we have no say, that neoliberal capitalism is a foregone conclusion. It's up to us to demonstrate otherwise.

Your Kiwisaver is not a superannuation, it's a neolib gift to the finance industry with zero (0) guarantees that it will have any value by the time you want to retire. If retirement is more than, say, 15 years away, how confident are you that your siphoned $ will be there.

Enough with telling women in politics to be resilient or “how to be safer”. Hold the men threatening them accountable. Political leaders - call it out, even when it’s your own supporters. Police - take threats seriously. Platforms - remove abuse you billionaire fucks. Protect women. Not abusers.

Greens promise R&D at 3% of GDP. NZ spends 1.54%. Last year the government scrapped the 2% target and cut the Marsden Fund by about 29%. Why it matters: in 1970 an hour of Kiwi work produced about what a Danish or Finnish hour did. By 2022 it was 40% less. Denmark and Finland spend 3%. #nzpol
