If Elizabeth Bacon inspired you to do some teaching after #pybeach today, she's got suggestions for action items to follow up with! There's a GSTA meetup coming up at Expo Park on December 6 if you're local!

Another way I think about this is in reference to surveillance capitalism. If I go about my life without any defenses (even a simple ad blocker on my browser or using a big tech social media site), the chances are high that my data is being used for some nefarious purpose. Let's say the data […]

2 years into this mess and I still haven't figured out a reasonable way to talk about the intersection of the AI "ethics" and "utility" arguments without getting completely derailed. the degree to which it "works"[1] does actually matter to the ethics; if it does "cure cancer" all over the globe […]

Local models or "ethically sourced" models as the solution is merely apologetics for the current "AI" landscape. They are mere drops in the bucket compared to what we're dealing with today. For example, Apertus, the open, GDPR compliant LLM developed in Switzerland boasts 70 billion parameters […]

When my daughter was younger, I read her the book "Antiracist Baby" (which is a great book, by the way). It talks about how babies are not born being racist OR antiracist. They are taught. "Babies are taught to be racist or antiracist—there is no neutrality." 7/n
