When salmon return home to spawn, they sustain life far beyond the river. Their journey nourishes forests, supports wildlife, and connects ecosystems from the ocean to the mountains. 🌲🐟

PSF leadership recently met with Mamalilikulla First Nation Chief Winidi (John Powell) and his team to tour the Mamalilikulla Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA), northeast of Port McNeill. Learn more about the IPCA: vist.ly/5gcz2 📸: Taylor Roades, Jim Shinkewski

Earlier this summer, PSF funded $6,000 for the BC Conservation Foundation and the Snuneymuxw First Nation to salvage juvenile salmon in Nanaimo. So far, crews have rescued more than 5,000 fish and are working toward a plan that will allow more timed "pulse" water releases.

Ever seen 30,000 steelhead enter the ocean? Earlier this summer, Steelhead Lager joined PSF to participate in a steelhead release from the Seymour River Hatchery. Now they'll spend several years at sea before coming home to spawn in local streams.

PSF joined partners this week to celebrate the re-opening of qapoje Park in Comox. qapoje (kah-poh’-jeh) means “spring salmon in a creek flowing south” and the reimagined greenspace will support previously lost salmon habitat in the Comox estuary. The park is now open to the public.

To combat the spread of whirling disease, Clean, Drain and Dry all boats and equipment when moving between water bodies. With PSF support, local stewards at Central Kootenay Invasive Species Society will lead community outreach among water users this summer.

As of June 15, 2026, the provincial mountain snowpack is at 48% of normal, down from 64% of normal on June 1. PSF is working with partners to drive proactive drought planning, stream monitoring, and faster interventions for salmon. Learn more at PSF.CA

Wild Salmon Day reached 7.1 million people, and it’s all thanks to YOU 🐟 From the whole team here at PSF, we are thankful to everyone who raised the flag for salmon across B.C. and the Yukon, and around the world. #WildSalmonDay

Happy #WorldOceansDay! PSF scientists are using innovative tagging and sampling techniques in the ocean to pull back the curtain on salmon health, diet, and environmental stressors in real time. Together, we can act to help salmon survive at sea. 📸: Tavish Campbell

Happy Wild Salmon Day! 🎉 Join us today to celebrate salmon and raise awareness of the threats they face! It will take all of us to ensure healthy salmon for future generations. Share the flag and use the #WildSalmonDay.

On western Vancouver Island, the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and Redd Fish Restoration have spent a decade reviving the Tranquil Creek watershed. Restoration success stories like this show us what’s possible. But we need to do more, and fast. Learn more at vist.ly/54wh3

As part of the United Nations global restoration movement, this Wild Salmon Day will celebrate salmon habitat restoration efforts. We invite you to share the great work happening in your community on June 1. Use the hashtag #WildSalmonDay so we can reshare!

Save the date! Wild Salmon Day is June 1. This international movement will celebrate wild salmon, raise awareness of the threats they face, and spotlight important work. In partnership with Atlantic Salmon Trust, Atlantic Salmon Federation, First Nations Fisheries Council of BC.

To future-proof salmon management, PSF experts are working with partners across B.C. and the Yukon to track the status of salmon and their habitats, quantify their exposure to climate change and identify resilience pathways. Learn more about salmon resilience: vist.ly/42hua

This week is National Volunteer Week! From the entire PSF team, thank you to the hundreds of volunteer groups across B.C. and the Yukon who are hard at work to lead salmon conservation efforts in their communities. 📸: Mossom Creek Hatchery & Education Centre

Happy Earth Day from everyone at the Pacific Salmon Foundation. 🌎🐟 An individual salmon’s journey is a reminder of this planet’s many natural wonders. #EarthDay #EarthDay2026 #PacificSalmon #WildSalmon

PSF research has found that decades of coastal development have altered approximately 35% of the shoreline, including nearshore habitats critical for juvenile salmon and other coastal wildlife, on a large portion of the east coast of Vancouver Island. Learn more: marinedata.psf.ca/atlases/resi...

They found the following levels of modification (e.g. structures such as seawalls, which have demonstrable negative impacts on the habitat) in coastal cities: Victoria & Esquimalt urban waterfront area –  46% Regional District of Nanaimo – 30%

Between 2021 and 2025, PSF’s Resilient Coasts for Salmon team mapped the coastline from Victoria to Port McNeill in a small boat called Wilbur, capturing high-resolution imagery and then digitizing the structures they saw into an interactive map. Learn more: marinedata.psf.ca/atlases/resi...

Today is #WorldWaterDay💧 PSF has launched the Pacific Freshwater Monitoring Database with stream temperature data from 1,300+ monitoring sites to help inform salmon management across B.C. and the Yukon. Learn more and contribute your own data: vist.ly/4vr8q
