Last winter, we funded a visit to MIT for @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social researcher Joshua Brown, through our Residency Scheme. Joshua spent the time working on OpenSoftHaptics: a DIY-friendly haptic interface that changes its softness on demand using mechanical constrictive particle jamming.

It's almost time for the 2026 Summer School at @lancasteruni.bsky.social! We're excited to welcome a diverse group of delegates from all over the world and an incredible line-up of speakers. We also can't wait to welcome back our favourite band, The Usuals. Don't forget your dancing shoes! 💃

Closing soon - don't miss out on our open funding call! We're seeking project proposals relating to more sustainable digital device prototyping, iterative innovation and low-volume production. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟯𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲: lnkd.in/erDE_Vhm

Missed the webinar for our Sustainability for Device Production funding call? You can now view the recording on our website, including essential info and a Q&A. Learn more, watch the webinar, and apply by the 30th of June: lnkd.in/erDE_Vhm

This call seeks proposals relating to more sustainable device prototyping, iterative innovation and low-volume production. This includes modular design, repairability, responsible material selection, energy-efficient production processes, ethical supply chains, and circular economy strategies.

We were proud to once again sponsor this year's Open Hardware Summit! Representing us were two Device Prototyping Summer School alumni, Manuel Heredia Ortiz and Emma Hansen who brought along their own prototypes to showcase. A massive thank you to Manuel and Emma!! @oshwassociation.bsky.social

Topics covered by experts in the field include: ⚙️ Electronic printed circuit board (PCB) design and manufacture ⚙️ Design for manufacture (DfM) and for test (DfT) ⚙️ Surface mount (SMT) assembly ⚙️ Moving from a first prototype to tens, hundreds and thousands ⚙️ And much more!

Have you applied yet for our 3.5 day summer school at Lancaster University? 30 places available with accommodation, meals & all course content included for just £100, plus thousands in prizes to develop the most compelling and impactful prototypes into products. Apply by 13 May: lnkd.in/etb-b6jC

We were excited to host a well-attended workshop on Tuesday at CHI 2026 in Barcelona. The workshop explored how design and manufacturing expertise is shared in open-source hardware communities, including discussion of common challenges and solutions. Learn more: lnkd.in/e_3yPiFk #CHI2026 #HCI

Dr Ben Oldfrey at @ucl.ac.uk leads our funded project which is seeking to integrate soft stress-tracking mechanisms at the device level to improve user comfort in assistive technology like prosthetics, orthotics, and braces. Learn more: lnkd.in/eKTyCPqz #AssistiveTech #Prosthetics

Joshua says: 'Having an amazing time at MIT's Cutaneous Sensory Lab working on the OpenSoftHaptics project! We are developing affordable, 3D-printable haptic devices that can change softness in the palm of your hand, helping to make advanced tactile displays accessible to the wider community.'

⏰ Deadline approaching! Apply by 11th March to our Development Specialist position to take the lead on shaping ‘BOMNADO’, a Python/Django-based bill of materials management software on an open-source platform. 🔗Access the full details and apply here: lnkd.in/garURpRU

Making a digital device prototype is getting easier thanks to the availability of off-the-shelf parts, and traditional manufacturing makes it easy to produce in the thousands. But organisations like Air Giants who are producing in low volumes get stuck in between, facing replication challenges.

Have you heard about the funding available through our pro² Residency Scheme? ⚡Visitors will conduct world-leading, curiosity-driven research and build lasting partnerships. 🌐 U.K. Industry Residency, U.K.-Overseas Residency, and International-U.K. Residencies. Learn more➡️ tinyurl.com/pro2-rs

The MakeDevice app empowers users to create robust, replicable copies of Jacdac-enhanced micro:bit prototypes. It does this by generating production files suitable for manufacturing a more integrated version of the prototype based on a custom printed circuit board. Learn more: lnkd.in/eaC_aqMH
