Devs who have done the legwork of getting their games translated (by humans, obv) what did that process look like? Especially recently, how have you gone about finding trustworthy translators who won’t dump your writing into slopbots? How have you verified the quality in languages you don’t speak?

Our game Mountains & Molehills used JSON files that reference relics and cards by an English key name, then the gets the display name, flavor text, tooltip info, etc. using standard locale codes. (ie. en_us) Only problem is that there’s only one locale to choose from right now… 😅

Would you send just these JSON files to translators? Maybe make a custom tool for data entry so you can guarantee validity? I’m already planning on making an in-engine dialogue editor so you can preview mood portraits and stuff as you write, so maybe use that for cards too? Lmk!

Why tf is this slop able to reach out to me directly? They sent me 3 separate invites to this same app. Neither the associated email or the fact that I’m an apple developer is public information, so it looks like Apple just handed them this awful slop marketing opportunity directly. 🫠

Should also point out… I’ve never once entertained the idea of making an ad-funded mobile game. I don’t think it’s a good model as a whole, to be quite honest. And obviously I’ve never touched any AI nonsense.

I cannot overstate how huge of a boon this sort of thing is for young developers with dreams that are maybe bigger than their skill set. I remember as a teenager looking at the weird “costs this much if over x$ in sales (commercial)” model and thinking that it’s something I needed to consider 😅

📢 Some exciting news! 🎉 Our upcoming next-generation runtime, GMRT, will be free for commercial use and source avaliable for all non-console platforms! READ MORE gamemaker.io/en/blog/gmrt...

Obviously there’s more reasons to celebrate this change, but i think it’s important to show some compassion to your younger (and dumber) self and wish better for the next guy. Part of why I’m a bit of a FOSS’ Witness preaching the good word 😇

Massively simplified the code to get my hand-container working in Godot. Though the process I learned I was going-about it all wrong in the original iteration, in pretty much every way. This version is faster, cleaner, and acts as a margin+panel container too so the scenetree can be cleaner.

I wrote the code from scratch, but re-doing this was VERY much inspired by Christophe’s work here. Seeing how smooth and clean it looked made me realize how badly I needed to update mine for Mountains & Molehills! bsky.app/profile/qaqe...

Exploring some solutions for a potential deckbuilder page (for my free Ui guide)! I'm extending a HBoxContainer, but I think I should try with a custom container instead 🤔 #Godot #GameDev #Ui

The upside of game dev for someone with a relatively short depressive cycle is that there’s always menial tasks available for when I can’t bring myself to creativity. Making silly animations and music was a no-go this week, but codebase cleanup and bug-fixes? That’s sad-brain compatible.

Commits today totaled around 800 files touched, most of which was outdated art assets being removed and bug fixes for tons of stuff that had been plaguing the game, such as digging not properly being disabled when you only have “Transient” cards remaining, which just did… this…

Walked into my office this morning and Podunk Games HR was waiting for me… and he looks concerned. It’s been real, folks 😭✌️

One of the most fun things I did in my game jam game “Permanent Marker” a few years back was implement ideas and designs from other participants as cameos to their games. Since then, I’ve always hoped to do something like that again. Maybe as relics for fellow indies in Mountains & Molehills 🥺❤️

super duper fun day at the library! felt pretty nerdy ngl but it was a great game showcase!! today we learned that even artists (me) can make builds of the game! however (to my chagrin) it had bugs _| ̄|○ #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame

Me, Programmer: *can’t go to ONE showcase* Wife, Artist: I’ll bring the game! 😇 Artist over text: hey so the players figured out how to get negative two hundred and forty-seven turn-time… and counting. The bugs do not exist if I cannot see them 😌🫣

Jokes aside, thank you to everyone who came to check out our silly game at the Worcester Indies event today! Sorry I couldn’t be there to hotfix my equally silly code lmaooo

Shaders aren’t final (we’re pivoting to a simpler approach for those) but the enchantment system is coming along nicely! For now, relics you collect will have a 1-in-3 chance of being enchanted, and a 1-in-8 chance of getting a second enchant. It’ll end up being much rarer once NPCs can offer it 😊

Signal boost. This is just theft. Calling opt-out-by-default “consensual” doesn’t magically make it NOT blatant theft.

got this email from unity just now, enabling one of my asset pack to be scrapped by their unity spark by default @unity.com , don't do this????? should be opt in not opt out

This looks awesome and gives more artists an escape from both the AI and Adobe nightmares. ❤️ love to see it.

Kala Paint@kalapaint.bsky.social

Kala Paint is out! I'm @olawson.bsky.social , professional artist for 15 years, then game dev, now wrote the painting software I wish I'd been using all this time. GPU-run creamy brushes, no subscription, no gen AI crap, hand-coded with ideas from artists in our Discord, and more added weekly!

That’s a wrap! 🥰♥️ Mole (pictured here) had a great time playing Mountains & Molehills at @bostonfig.bsky.social! In fact, Mole wishlisted the game on Steam and now we’re up to 94 wishlists!!! Thank you to the Boston FIG volunteers for a fun convention. #indiegame #roguelike #gamedev

We’re going to the Boston Festival of Indie Games tomorrow! Come play our silly game where you throw rocks and dirt at your enemies!!!! #indiegame #indiedev @bostonfig.bsky.social I totally 100% did not accidentally upload the wrong year haha

Extremely ambitious feature-list we chased for our #BFIG2026 build of Mountains & Molehills. Since we initially applied, there’s near-zero assets untouched, including ALL NPCs getting full puppet-animated redesigns. With BFIG now only one more day away, I can’t believe how much we got done. 😭❤️

There's even more video games to play! Check out all of these games at the Digital Showcase at BostonFIG on Saturday! Mimic Meadows Monsterpiece! Mountains & Molehills nudge Perilous Pairs Stitchlings WaxHeart #BostonFIG #indiegames #gamedev #indiegamedev #videogames

Another “proud of myself” update from today: Art team asked for a way to produce high quality, transparent images of characters mid-animation. So now if dev-cheats are enabled, there’s a menu on the pause screen to make them! Supports zoom, pan, & mirror. Great for button making. ~200 lines of code.

Know before you go: BostonFIG is THIS SATURDAY at 10am! At the @bostonarts.org Cyclorama, 539 Tremont St. Nearest T stops: Back Bay (Orange) and Tufts Medical Center (Orange), plus Silver Line along Washington St. (Parking is available but limited!) Tickets at the door or at bostonfig.com.

Pretty proud of the way I built the new settings menu for Mountains & Molehills. The way the settings page saves and updates makes it pretty easy for the rest of the game to alter itself around the settings. I’m using it now to implement a “reduced motion” mode for accessibility

You’d think that FREQUENTLY mentioning that we are an ZERO-AI studio would be a big enough hint, but never underestimate how dense tech grifters can be. 🙄 Silly me missing out on $5000 in slop store credit though

I truly love the ambitious push to better your game when you have a live showcase coming up, but I gotta say I never realized how difficult it is to regularly market online during that crunch period for a small studio. I want to make videos and posts but I also have 10,000 lines of code to write 🫨

Suggestion for fellow game devs: If you plan on making your own sounds, consider getting a Zoom H1 handy recorder. It’s probably the best possible quality-to-price ratio mic you can get for sound effects. #NotSponsored lol

As our project gets bigger and bigger, we’ve added custom icons and tooling! Here’s a mini tutorial on how to add custom editor icons to nodes in #Godot! #gamedev #gamedesign #indiegame #indiedev
