the whole thing: systems naturally trend toward certain outcomes, outcomes benefit certain people, and the quadrant of "not naturally trended toward" and "benefits those with less power" requires intention and attention to resolve. the world is sprinting from this sole value, and that's abhorrent.
I really think everyone needs to pay attention to this coordinated campaign to delegitimize Muslim Americans - not just as citizens but as humans.
These increasingly hysterical attacks are a prelude to Republicans bringing us to a very, very dark place after the election.
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

This supercut is likely to make Trump VERY upset. The difference between Trump and Obama is on full display, and the contrast is absolutely devastating. Watch until the end...
this is unforgivable psychological warfare that is seriously taking a toll on so many. he makes up boogeymen, and people legitimately truly believe him and will ruin relationships rather than be corrected. committing murder of the otherwise sane identities of millions.
Trump: "In Washington, all the restaurants were closing. People were being held up. They'd walk into a restaurant. Like Jesse James. 'Stand up! Give us all your money.' They're eating dinner at a fancy restaurant. All the restaurants were closing."
“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

this is the post that had zitron subtweet about how his dissenters don't have morals and then block me. he's the most followed anti-AI voice we've got, and it's hurting the credibility of legitimate AI related concern.
this is exactly the point I'm trying to make. it's one thing to argue "it's abhorrent these highly valued entities are consuming electronics to the detriment of the world", and it's another to say "these highly valued entities are making a strategic self-error". /
it's sad how many people merely needed an example and once they got one were willing to walk this far down the path of abject racism. that willingness was a sickness that's always been present. but it's also a deep tragedy that the sickness was enabled and actualized. this was all so optional.
Trump on El-Sayed: "We can't him in the United States-- we can't have him in the United States Senate. I look so forward to Michigan. I think it's gonna be wild. Because he's a total phony. He's a little phony. He's a jihadist. He's a vicious, violent jihadist."

Diabolical — Republicans appear to be sending fake pro-trans/LGBTQ mailers from Wyoming directly to kids in Texas (not their parents!) to piss off voters
Someone needs to ask him why, if he doesn’t believe the polls showing Repubs getting trounced, the campaign arm of his caucus is spending almost all off its money to protect Republicans in districts that voted for Trump, some by as much as 20 points.
Elon Musk boosted the lie that James Talarico stayed at a mental hospital.
Meta suspended No Kings’ Instagram account during nationwide actions.
Staff at the Ellison-owned CBS News were reportedly told to tie Abdul El-Sayed to the Muslim Brotherhood and 9/11.
Democracy dies in billionaire hands.
Please stop with the "reports of voting machines switching results" scare mongering. that's like saying there are reports of poll workers wearing "I'm going to shred the ballots" T-shirts. a plan to hack the machines or shred the ballots is scary; if it were real it would not be visible.
In any other admin, this would probably be the most outrageous official statement ever made by a sitting FCC director: Strongly implying that the government forbids broadcast networks from reporting on the president's falling poll numbers. (Sorry to paste from twitter but that's where he posts.)
"Bike Shedding" is something that needs to enter the political lexicon. The idea is: it's easier to get a committee to approve a nuclear reactor than it is to get them to approve a bike shed: everyone feels confident "contributing to the debate" about the bike shed (color? size? style? materials?) /
Trump is comfortable asserting himself in building a ballroom, renovating a golf course. His supporters are comfortable backing him on these things. Behind the scenes, oligarchs are implementing fascism, and everyone feels like they've done an honest day's "oversight".
This Black MAGA creator says she “cannot believe the disrespect” after being removed from a San Antonio rally hosted by Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton!?!?! Why would they treat her this way???
this is the opposite of a good take. when execs' justification for ushering in the terribleness of the modern world is ALWAYS "the incentives made me do it", then there is no remedy but to alter the incentives. it is the role of democracy to hold systems to account where free market fails.
Yes, it sucks that the No Kings insta was suspended (though I still think it was likely an automated tripwire, rather than deliberate). But falling back into "well we have to politically punish media execs to get better results" doesn't fix anything.
Ten years ago today.
In just the last few days: Trump made a deal for the U.S. to buy Russian diesel, an economic lifeline for Putin; he and Elon Musk blamed each other for an order that slowed down Starlink satellite connectivity over Ukraine...
Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas calls to investigate Republican President Trump's Aid and Comfort to Russia/Putin.
Zelensky confirmed Starlink continues to disconnect above 161km/h - Ukraine can't intercept Russian drones, and tests outside Ukraine border show the sabotage is willful.
Hearing from my sources that this "over the top" tweet from Jan Crawford is being discussed internally at CBS. At the same time, as those same sources noted, "Jan is protected by Bari" and has been a very vocal acolyte of Weiss.
"She just can't help herself," one network insider said.
I think we are failing as a society to grapple with how deeply so many have no idea what’s going on. Some choose to disconnect from the news, but others who watch for hours don’t understand how a microwave works and so live out life in desperate confusion, cling to whatever feels stabilizing.
When Haidt talks about an elephant and rider (representing the challenging to direct human subconscious), is there a chance that all that’s really happening here is that people don’t have mature systems of understanding that accommodate changes of understanding?
That is, people don’t change their behavior under new information, because what is driving their behavior is not connected to that information. I don’t “go to church because god exists and demands it”, I go to church because I have no idea what’s happening and it’s on my schedule.
I think we are failing as a society to grapple with how deeply so many have no idea what’s going on. Some choose to disconnect from the news, but others who watch for hours don’t understand how a microwave works and so live out life in desperate confusion, cling to whatever feels stabilizing.
(Not that microwaves particularly represent meaningful understanding, but we’re surrounded by inscrutable boxes that “just work” and if you don’t bring a disciplined curiosity to the world, it’s probably alienating to be so deeply embedded in “magic”. iPhones, grocery stores, cars…)
I think we don’t acknowledge how long that tail of individuals is, and it includes professionals, up to and including elites of society. You can get extremely far along only comprehending your most locally relevant systems.
Ossoff: "Tech titans dig bunkers while warning us the AI they're creating risks human extinction. Meanwhile, our Congress debates youth sports and the president builds a ballroom ... I refuse to leave my girls a world as dark and dangerous and cruel as this one threatens to become"
Will any reporter ask the President of the United States to name the five specific states where he alleges that public school teachers are deciding -- all on their own initiative, over the objections of the parents -- to force their children into gender-affirming surgeries?
Seems like a big story?
Trump: "We have 5 states where your child goes off to school as Tim and comes back as Tammy 3 or 4 days later. It's true. And teachers make a decision. 'Goodbye Timmy I love you so much, I'll see you later.' And you say, 'Where's my son? My son is in the hospital.' Can you imagine?"
yes: no impunity. if your ilk won't act pro-socially without motivation, then the current crop of executives' role in history needs to be illustrating the consequences for the benefit of the next. I disagree with the "bubble popping" prediction, but this is applicable for all future reckonings.
When the AI bubble pops, we can’t repeat past corporate bail outs. We need to be ready with policies that protect ordinary people and hold tech execs accountable. We also need to talk about nationalizing AI companies — or maybe even abolishing them altogether…

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads
principles were exchanged for power, and that's shameful.
also: a movement so primed to make that exchange, on such obviously twisted grounds, on behalf of a reality tv embodiment of cruelty and incompetence, is a movement with fundamental problems. do not mourn the old GOP, identify what was broke.
Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night.
Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.
