It's really lovely that they laid Bob Uecker to rest within earshot of the Milwaukee Brewers' first two World Series games. Fans left him flowers and a pumpkin!

Look at this poster, LOOK AT IT!!! Isn't this the most 1971 thing you ever saw?? As I remember it, it was a minor cultural moment. I should rewatch this one of these days it's been a few decades

Name an animated film you grew up with.

First time I went to Manhattan was 2003 or 2004. Took a long walk from midtown to the ferry dock downtown. I saw a FDNY pumper slowly cruising down a street, about 7 or 8 guys in fire gear riding on the outside, slowing down and catcalling whenever they approached a sufficiently young pretty woman.

Now, FDNY's fame and adulation in the early 00s was completely earned. But there was already a cultural thing going on where lots of nice ladies were really publicly horny for firemen. And after a year or two of that it all just went to their heads and heroes turned into attention whores.

one of my kid's bands that is to say one of the multiple bands that one of my multiple kids is in. That's them on the floor

What do you mean it's bandcamp Friday??? That means it's the perfect day to check out Sorry For Your Loss the debut album from Milwaukee indie outfit Breakup Tour breakuptour.bandcamp.com/album/sorry-...

Make your favorite film sound as boring as possible without giving away the title: A man's ex shows up in his bar and convinces him to take on some work with her current boo.

I will yell "Mambo!" from the audience every time I see West Side Story. No apologies forthcoming. Incidentally, West Allis community theater's current production punches above its weight. You can still go see it tonight 7pm, Sunday 2pm at the Liberace auditorium @ 50th & Greenfield

I guess a photo of someone holding a loaded weapon and pointing it in their mouth is goddamned funny to a certain kind of mind. To me it just provokes feelings of deep sadness. I hate it. I didn't expect it to show up on my feed. I don't expect I'll miss reading their comments.

One great-grandfather, a former Secretary of State of Wisconsin, was kicked out of the banking industry for using a bank's assets to make (and lose) stupid bets on financial shenanigans. One of his sons was on the State Banking Commission at the time, this must have been extremely embarrassing

Citation needed on "most", bub. Raw milk cheeses younger than 60 days exist in Europe. Canada, too. But most cheese is commodity cheese, everywhere, and that's all going to be made from pasteurized milk for quality control reasons.

Christian Laurin@slashinvestor.bsky.social

Ehhh you know most European cheeses are made from non-pasteurized milk right? Ok we don't drink raw milk, it is all pasteurized.

It was 1977, and the sleazebag who ran Champion Chicken on 87th & Lisbon paid me $1.76/hr to wash dishes and bus tables and get yelled at. That was the special wage for tipped employees but I was not actually a tipped employee. Worked all summer, came away with pocket change.

Infinite 8@handle.invalid

Hey how make much did you make an hr on your first job and what was the job? I made $5.25 at Hollister in 2008

So I recently learned something about the commercial beef tallow process that I didn't know before, and I think it's a really interesting bit of chemical engineering. Me, I'm an occasional soapmaker. (Those occasions are basically my ADHD brain's random dicta. Anyway, years ago when I needed 1/

From a business perspective, it's kinda brilliant. If you want the hard fat like you'd get from suet, you *get* that, and the yield per cow is higher. The remainder -- it's semiliquid, like pan drippings -- you can sell that as frying oil to the people terrified of seeds. 6/

We tested a semi-soft 50% stearin blend, too. It didn't package well in a paper wrapper, but sold in buckets it's probably perfect for certain uses. Downside is I'll probably never buy $1.99/lb suet anymore, but it's fascinating how the meat packers are using everything but the moo. 7/7

So fast-forward to today, and the demand for beef tallow's through the roof, both for culinary and cosmetic purposes. My employer's going to supply packaging equipment to some clever businesses who hope to capitalize on this demand. (My free fat came from machine testing at our shop. Yay! Anyway) 4/

So I learned that today's meat processors don't use only the hard kidney fat -- they render the fat from the entire cow, and then fractionate it. That's just a separation process using freezing and thawing. "Fractional crystallization". I did that in high school chem lab, though not with fat. 5/

beef tallow, I'd find a big chunk of suet somewhere. Hard fat from near the kidneys. The local fancy grocery chain could get it for me, or maybe one of the butcher shops. It was ridiculously cheap, less than US$2/lb., and most of it was sold to people stocking bird feeders. I'd render it myself 2/

and was rewarded with a few pounds of hard, white, clean, basically odorless fat. That stuff is high in stearic acid and, as a part of a soap recipe, contributes to a hard, white mild bar that's more 'conditioning' than stripping the oils from your skin, and resistant to "dreaded orange spots". 3/

Other lives I might have led happily: - Great Lakes freighter 2nd mate - symphony orchestra 3rd horn - pastry chef - violin maker - cartographer - furniture maker - cheesemaker - dilettante with a generous trust fund

Some (Saxony, Pomerania) were "Old Lutherans", who didn't want to join the official half-Lutheran half-Calvinist state Frankenchurch. Others (Mecklenburg, more Pomeranians) were draft dodgers. I usually get a chuckle from South Germans when I tell them my ancestors were sick of being Prussians

I believe this is an op. He's neither popular or likeable, but legacy media outlets discussing the possibility of a presidential run is sure to get Democrat-haters on the left yelling at Emanuel-dislikers online and vice versa. Voilá, Dems in disarray again.

how does these assholes think Rahm will win South Carolina in a democratic primary

I was reading an online archive copy of the Summer 1976 issue of CoEvolution Quarterly, as one does, and found this improved version of the crappy, cheesy Spencer Gifts poster half the people my age seemed to have on their walls:

And upon investigating my that-name-sounds-familiar feeling, I see this is possibly the first published bit by writer Anne Lamott. I've never read anything by her. I'll have to change that.

Remembering that VZ had this weird beauty pageant mania some years ago before their financial collapses, in the same era that Trump had his own beauty pageant fetish, makes me wonder how long it'll take before Trump publicly gets involved in Venezuelan pageants after this latest caper
