Rhodochrosite from the Sweet Home Mine in Park County, Colorado, from a find in the early 2000s. A classic cleaved crystal from a classic USA locale! #rhodochrosite #sweethomemine #colorado #crystals #usa #mineralspecimens

Fluorite from Big Cottonwood Canyon, Salt Lake Co., Utah. As far as I can tell, this is the only specimen to have ever come out of this specific locale. #rockhounding #utah #bigcottonwoodcanyon #fluorite #mineralspecimens

Sand calcite from Rattlesnake Butte, South Dakota. This is an old stock specimen, as collecting has been restricted due to the area being named a National Natural Landmark (NNL). #oldstock #crystalspecimens #calcite #sandcalcite #rattlesnakebutte #southdakota #usa

A hematite after ammonite pseudomorph from Morocco! This ammonite essentially died, became calcified, & was then subjected to a change in environment, that added iron and turned the calcite to hematite. #pseudomorph #fossils #hematite #ammonite #morocco

Secondary copper minerals (azurite & an unidentifiable one) with a brachiopod imprint . Collected from the Apex Mine in Southern Utah before it was closed off to the public. #apexmine #coppermine #southern #utah #mineralspecimens #fossils

A clam fossil that formed pyrolusite and kerchenite crystals within. This specimen comes from the Kerch Peninsula in Ukraine, for which the latter mineral gets its name. #fossils #clam #fossil #pyrolusite #kerchenite #ukraine #mineralspecimens

“Kiwi” calcite on petrified wood from Garfield Co., UT. This specimen is from the original 1970s discovery, & has been on my bucket list for quite some time. I’m thrilled to finally have an example in my collection. #kiwicalcite #oldstock #crystals #garfield #utah #mineralspecimens

Amethyst from Elko Co., NV. The xls from this pocket are a very pale shade of lilac, with a brighter, more purple core. I collected this last year with my good friend on our last opportunity to rockhound together before he moved away, hence the name “Last Chance Pocket”. #amethyst #rockhound #nevada

So called beta quartz in matrix. Beta quartz forms at specific temperatures and pressures in the Earth that result in these perfectly symmetrical, hexagonal crystals. Despite this, they essentially paramorphs back into regular quartz. #quartz #betaquartz #crystals #mineralspecimens

One boulder of many covered in petroglyphs. Little Black Mountain in Littlefield, AZ. I was very grateful to have been able to see these beautiful works of art created by multiple nations roughly 6,000 years ago. #littleblackmountainpetroglyphs #nativeamerican #art #petroglyphs #arizona

3) only sign of vandalism I witnessed were around 8-10 spots where bullets had struck; however, it appeared that they did not damage any of the petroglyphs. The Arizona BLM that is in charge of this site maintains it very well.

2) natural pigment made of clay. This specific site has over 500 petroglyphs in total from many tribes including cultures pertaining to the Great Basin, Western Anasazi, and Lower Colorado River. I was very humbled to be able to visit this site and was grateful that it was preserved so well. The

1) Fun fact: a petroglyph is a symbol that has been pecked, rubbed, chiseled, or scraped, thus removing a layer from the stone (in this instance desert varnish from sandstone) whereas a pictograph is an image that has been drawn on using various methods, one of the more prominent being ochre, a

A goethite after pyrite pseudomorph from Pelican Point in Utah County, Utah. The material from this world famous locale has been analyzed, and is confirmed to be goethite, rather than limonite. #utah #usa #crystals #minerals #goethite #pyrite #pseudomorph
