• The feature is quite reliable in AppKit text editors such as TextEdit, Notes, and Calendar. • It works in Catalyst apps like Messages and Books, but there’s a refresh bug. Press an arrow key after typing a few letters to make suggestions appear.

• It doesn’t have a WebKit implementation, so this new command will not work when drafting emails or reminders. Emoji suggestions appear in search fields. Restore to defaults with: sudo defaults delete /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/Stickers InlineEmojiSearch

Apple’s “second-party” LG accessories will debut another Home feature: Proximity Control. As with HomePod, tapping or bringing iPhone near the accessory shows a hint in the Dynamic Island. An “Open Controls” button opens the accessory’s controls. Cameras and doorbells show a camera viewer.

In the current implementation, the enabled state is equivalent to Ask to Launch. Home’s helper text reads: “Show controls when you bring your iPhone near your [accessory].” The feature is still in active development across beta releases, so the final behavior may change.

The Dynamic Island proximity control code in iOS 27.2 was first reported by Aaron Perris.

The feature appears in code since iOS 27.0. In earlier versions, Apple showed three presentation options instead of the on/off toggle in iOS 27.2:

• Never: Suppresses proximity controls. • Ask to Launch: Shows Dynamic Island hint or notification, which deep links the control card. • Launch Automatically: Shows control card.

An iPhone without a Dynamic Island or an iPad will show a 30-second notification instead. You can disable this behavior in the Home app after setup. You’ll also see feedback in the Dynamic Island as iPhone launches setup when you first tap the accessory to pair it.

Behind the scenes, the accessory writes an “apple-deviceid” in the Matter payload stored on its NFC tag that helps iOS identify it when tapped. It also broadcasts a Bluetooth Low Energy advert for Apple Proximity Control.

• Apple’s HomeKit-over-NFC implementation is separate from Matter NFC Commissioning. • Firmware for the LG lock and thermostat identifies an NXP SE051H Secure Element.

• While iOS 27 supports standard Matter NFC commissioning, LG’s firmware replaces NXP’s Matter NFC applet in the secure element with a HomeKit applet. This suggests that NFC provisioning will be a HomeKit exclusive. You can still pair the accessories over Matter once they’re powered on.

When you tap your iPhone on the accessory, HomeKit pairing happens over NFC. Your iPhone’s pairing identity and network credentials are stored in the accessory’s NFC secure element. Once powered on, the accessory joins your Wi‑Fi or Thread network, and your home hub completes the Matter setup.

Quick Look on iPhone Duo has a new two-page layout in the open book position.

Four-HomePod surround is almost here, and Apple is adding more capabilities to its Home software. Highlights from audioOS 27.2 beta 3: • Siri can match a speaker to its surround system: “Accessory [X] is a speaker in surround system [Y].” Relies on HomeKit exposing the surroundSystem interface.

• When HomePod is part of a Home Theater group for an eligible Apple TV, it can now use a new proxy-activation path to pass Siri requests to Apple TV. A separate, older path still forwards microphone audio to Apple TV. (AFSiriActivationOdeonProxyVoiceTrigger)

• There’s a new light animation for rejecting touch events on HomePod. As an example, here’s a demo of HomePod rejecting touch events while Siri AI is in thinking mode. It’s not clear yet when the new touch rejection may activate. (ShakeCircleAnimation)

Apple is working on granular controls for Suggested Actions in Messages, based on iOS 27.2 beta 3 code.

You’ll soon be able to choose characters from the Apple TV catalog as profile pictures for local Apple TV profiles. “Choose a character from Apple TV or an emoji.” The server endpoint continues to serve only emojis, as in previous releases.

Safari on iPhone Duo already supports the Device Posture and Viewport Segments APIs. In the simulator, you can enable both under Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Feature Flags.

You can control which poses will enter StandBy on iPhone Duo. You can also have iPhone enter Standby only while charging.

New on iPhone Duo: redesigned Focus controls on the Lock Screen. When a Focus mode is active, a button above the bottom controls lets you turn Focus off and back on until you leave the Lock Screen. When unlocked, the active Focus appears in the status bar above the clock.

Apple’s Home device may come in four finishes: Silver, Space Gray, Starlight, and Rose Pink. The Photo Face setup screen picks its preview art based on the hardware color the device reports. The device’s housing may also show in setup screens once device assets are available.

Setting up Apple’s upcoming Home device includes a new step: creating a Photo Face. It’s the same Photo Face coming to StandBy on iPhone Duo. That might explain why Apple hasn’t officially made StandBy available in the simulator.

Photo Face requires iCloud Photos. During setup, iPhone sends a few full-resolution “cold-start” photos so the face can display immediately. The device then downloads the rest from iCloud. (“Apple device” is a fallback because CoreTypes doesn’t know the new device’s name.)

iPhone Duo supports Tap to Pay on both screens, featuring an adaptive interface.

Here’s a deep dive into StandBy mode on iPhone Duo. Rushmore, the app meant to host the redesigned faces, is missing from the iOS 27.1 simulator. But its localization strings reveal unreported faces, and I got some new faces running in the current renderer. 🧵

2. Digital Clock Options for font, color, and three widget slots. The code defines 5 layouts: StandBy, Stacked, Top, Middle, and Bottom. The last four may be intended for the two-page “Book” configuration in the new Rushmore renderer.

3. Calendar Options for style, font, and color. One widget slot in the Date style.

Here’s the new face editor. Its design closely matches the Apple Watch face editor. You can swipe between settings, then scroll through available options. Next, a closer look at three faces I managed to get running:

1. Analog Clock Options for style, color, and two widget slots. Across these faces, the Duo simulator has no widget registry, so I couldn’t explore alternative widgets. You can also customize numerals: Arabic, Western / Arabic, Eastern / Devanagari.

Code reveals five more StandBy faces supported by the new renderer: • Home Camera: Single camera view or a grid of up to nine. • Home Modular: Perhaps a Home accessory-focused Modular. • Flow (ResponsiveArt): Possibly an animated, abstract face. • Fade: No design details. • Snoopy

Apple is working on bringing Call Context to the Dynamic Island. Currently hidden behind a feature flag in iOS 27.2 (ConversationKit / CallContextCardExpansion).

Good things are about to unfold. Apple is preparing an “Opened or Closed” automation in Shortcuts for iPhone Duo. Here it is switching between the Light and Night Dunes wallpapers.

Apple is preparing sound effects for the Snoopy screen saver on Apple TV. Hidden controls in tvOS 27 will let you turn screen-saver audio on or off, with a third “Reduced” option. None of the Snoopy content packages include audio yet.

A new screenshot experience is coming to Apple Watch, inspired by iPhone. Hidden behind a defaults preference in watchOS 27.2, it lets you preview, share, or delete a screenshot right after taking it. It’s controlled by ScreenshotSharingEnabled in the com.apple.Carousel preferences domain.

Siri AI is coming to HomePod. audioOS 27 includes Linwood, the system behind Siri AI, plus a new look and sound for Siri on HomePod. May require new hardware. The new status lights emphasize white, blue and orange, matching Siri AI’s palette on other devices. 🔊 Sound on
