Writing, drawing, and coloring the adventures of Solomon Kane -- living Sword of Vengeance who wanders a fantastical 16th century. I am also writing stories for The Savage Sword of Conan magazine, published by Heroic and Titan comics. I love making these stories. Thank you for looking.

Saw some post about big, fat reads. Here are my biggest, increasing in size: Vanity Fair Middlemarch Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell Water Margin Gargantua & Pantagruel Gormenghast Trilogy Don Quixote Tom Jones Le Morte d' Arthur American Tragedy Reformations Ulysses Golden Bough Bleak House (cont)

Didn't list series beyond trilogies but Fleming's Bond books and short stories would fit between Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire & The Holy Bible. The Barsoom series (the 10 Burroughs wrote) would fit between The Holy Bible & Lord of the Rings. Series readers take in very large books (in a way).

All of Robert E. Howard's Conan stories is, in size, between Les Miserables and the Elric Saga 1 & 2. There is a third Elric Saga (which I'm mid-reading) that makes Moorcock's series a longer work (but Moorcock had 50 years). Astonishing how much Robert E. Howard wrote.

Rest in peace, Walter Koenig. I had the honor of sitting beside Walter during a banquet celebrating Star Trek's 30th anniversary. Inside Space Camp of all places. He was wry, darkly funny, not quick to laugh or smile but it lit you up when it happened. An unforgettable evening.

Watched Clayface (2026); don't fuss over the comics connection and just think of it as a mainstream horror movie. Tonally--not that different from Cronenberg's The Fly. Thumbs up.

My wife crossed the room naked, except for a coat. The coat means: just stay in your seat Patrick and get some work done.

Guess it could have meant the room is cold but that wasn't my first thought. 💗

Whatever may be said of the relation of the sexes there is no man who loves a woman that does not desire to come to her for the renewal of his courage, for the cutting asunder of his difficulties. Drove up to Fairmont today (closest comic store, and the biggest store in WV from what I hear). Hoped to pick up issues 2-4 of Solomon Kane: The Lion Errant. Good news for @patrickzircher.bsky.social --the guy in the store let me know that he hasn't been able to keep the book in stock.

You have to take the time to excise unnecessary words in your scripts. Change: When was the moment when it all began? To: When was the moment it all began? Or: When did it all begin? The last may be best as present tense creates immediacy.

First 5 RPGs: 1. D&D (white box w/Men & Magic, Monsters & Treasure, Underground & Wilderness) 2. Metamorphosis Alpha (GammaWorld but on a vast starship in space) 3. Tunnels and Trolls 4. John Carter, Warlord of Mars 5. Arduin (we just mashed it together with D&D as an expansion)

Avram Grumer@avramg.bsky.social

My first five RPGs played (I think): 1. White box D&D 2. Holmes Basic D&D 3. AD&D (1st ed) 4. Villains & Vigilantes 5. Champions

I must have had an amazing local station when I was 9 to 12 years old because I saw La Jetee, Woman in the Dunes, The Face of Another, Seconds, Alphaville-- all this cerebral sf-- on TV: before TCM, Criterion, cable.

It's a weird thing, talking about artists. What do interviews really tell us. Wives and children know artists' personalities better than anyone-- and yet, even they only see a side and often the work itself is as much a mystery to them.

Watched the horror/sf classic The Face of Another (1966); a surgeon develops a life-like mask for a horribly disfigured man that allows him to become a responsibility-free stranger. An existential (ie. characters sometimes speak philosophically) study in morality and identity. #FilmSky

Really recommend this one as it works on a lot of levels. There's a lot to unpack. You'll think about social media. About loneliness. You'll think about marriage and how hard it is not to grow apart. And on another level it's a thriller. It's a heady brew. Based on the book by Kobo Abe.

Eisner interviewed Joe Kubert, and Joe is so gracious about the obstacles in comics publishing. It's just one interview but Eisner usually got through to the real personality of the artist-- and Joe didn't kvetch. At the same time, he Did listen. He acted on things Eisner said, after that interview.

Drew@drewcompton.bsky.social

Joe Kubert was one of those artists, as in “I can’t mess with your stuff, you’re Joe Kubert.” Although I have no clue what editorial headaches he had to deal with.

Eisner kind of challenges Joe to create some mature stories and after that interview, a few years later, Joe does.

When I think about it, I know a lot of very independent people. We all kind of admire each other for it but don't stay in contact much-- because 'independent' :)

My buddy from Alaska contacted me! He really went off the grid. Built a cabin. He turned me on to the Kurt Russell -John Carpenter movies and, in his prime, was a Kurt Russell type himself. We went rock climbing, played Call of Cthulhu, he modeled for some of my comics (as Capt. Pike in Star Trek).

He has an old, old, old drawing I did framed on his wall :)

I think we were 'brothers with different mothers'-- a lot alike. We both wanted independence, liked the manly things-- but also had some nerd in us. He's living the life he always wanted up there.

I was 13 and he was 15 when we met. We drew Marvel comic characters in art class, played the earliest version of D&D in the school library. Real kick to have him find me.
