Neither of the people in this photograph are qualified for an academic job (see also "Professor" Bill Shorten). I like Ardern a lot, and creating a role using her experience for mentoring is great, but hospitals don't say "we've hired Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman to do heart surgeries this month."

"But Mark Scott is an administrator, so it's appropriate for him to be VC" - ok: make him Chief of Army then. I'm sure he'll do a great job. Oh what's that? You can't just plunk a civilian with no military training at the head of an ADF branch? That's something you have to earn?

Coturnix Quail chicks Edam, Jarlsberg and Raclette at two hours old vs just over one week. (We are all very upset that little Cheddar didn't make it, despite our best efforts). Growing at a frankly alarming rate.

The laughter is the privilege! Our political "debates" are shallow horse shit. We are globally mocked for what we think are our 'problems'. Australia is a very large place filled with very small minded people. And nothing highlights it more than our domestic political discourse..... /n

The Australian newspaper has been claiming a "forensic audit report" shows BoM's temperature data has "widespread error". For 15 years climate sceptics have been claiming a conspiracy around the data. Is anything different this time?

Among the many things climate change deniers don’t understand is significance. They spend years looking for errors in climate data but don’t understand that what they find is almost always insignificant. It’s also why they’ll never be satisfied by any rigorous report on climate data.

MITCHELLS ADVENTURE CEO: Did you order all that new stock I asked you to? NEW EMPLOYEE WHOSE ONLY KNOWLEDGE OF CAMPING COMES FROM RDR2: Sure did, boss,

GABRIEL BYRNE: This is a tent! How am I supposed to wear a tent?! JOEL COEN: In fact, this box is *all* camping equipment! And there’s an invoice to something called Mitchell’s Adventures! ETHAN COEN: But if this stuff is here, where did the costumes for Miller’s Crossing go - oh no

Every time I am approached by a potential MA or PhD student I take it as part of my responsibility to tell them there is no functioning academic job market in Australian philosophy and there hasn’t been one in more than a decade.

our institutions have stopped hiring, we've been telling students not to pursue advanced study, and to the extent that humanists have mounted a defence, it's been by pleading our utility as an adjunct of STEM disciplines and professional schools in short, it all worked

Faintly obsessed with these ads I keep getting on Facebook. It's AI, but you have to watch a lot of the ad to be *convinced* it's AI - not just because it's visually convincing, but because the effort here is so out of proportion to the product it's hard to believe anyone would bother

There's a lot of obvious scam craft in these ads, sure, from the sad story to the appeal to save bees (who apparently drown in puddles of water?!) to the fake artisan angle. But it feels like an awfully long way to go for moving some crappy ceramic flowers you could get at the Reject Shop for $4.

Now, none of that is surprising in itself. What I do find bewildering is going to this much trouble just to sell some crappy ceramic flowers. At some point the economics has all gone to hell if producing AI ads this long and this elaborate is actually profitable.

Somebody has written a whole script about things being bad for bee colonies and a sad backstory ("Bev" could not save her husband "Col's" bees) and generated alarmingly lifelike scenes. You can just about believe it's real - until 'Bev' suddenly starts randomly speaking in an American accent.

@davidjroth.bsky.social the county Republican party (in Ohio) is in the same building that I work in, and I taped up part of your column to their door today, because you express your disgust much more civilly and coherently than I do, much thanks.

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.
