The problem with reporting "$5 billion" is many readers will think the matter is a serious one. It's not. Trump might as well have declared "a bazillion dollars," like an 8 year old. The "threat" is just a way the old man showing his cranky pants. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/21/u...

nytimes.comTrump Threatens Defamation Suit Over National Guard Report, Aiming to Intimidate a CriticIt was the latest example of President Trump’s bid to use the legal system against those who voice unflattering facts and opinions generally protected by the First Amendment.

8 children shot dead in Louisiana is lead story in the Guardian's U.S. edition at this moment. The NYT stashes the story a long scroll down under "More news" and leads with more "Trump sez." They just can't quit this bad boyfriend.

Joke/no joke. .. “If it doesn’t happen, I’m blaming JD Vance,” Mr. Trump said to laughter of Mr. Vance trying to secure a deal at an Easter lunch earlier this month. “If it does happen, I’m taking full credit.”

One political lesson from the Iran debacle: The character and abilities of our leaders matter more than the "positions" they adopt during an election campaign. Trump is obsessed with revenge and dominance, and lack empathy -- character flaws. He lacks analytical ability. These lead to bad outcomes.

For too long we have elevated leaders who have been ends oriented by making money or acquiring notoriety. Instead, we should elect people who are fundamentally good and have reasoning ability. Instead of pols who "get things done," we should emphasize those with moral clarity.

Shocking!

🚨 In Nov., Trump's Labor Dept. lowered the minimum wage for foreign farmworkers. A month later, Trump's winery filed to hire 36 foreign, temporary workers. The rate? Almost $2/hour less than in 2025. 1/ me, for @forbes.com

It's easy for news outlets to adopt the catchphrases of political actors, but doing so normalizes them without critique. To think that there is an overarching philosophy or doctrine behind Trump's actions is absurd. He's little more than a baby crying to be fed.

President Goodbrain can't remember what he said five days ago.

Q: “You said you would have no problem with releasing the full video of that strike on September 2nd.” Trump: “I didn’t say that. You said that. I didn’t say that. This is ABC fake news.” Trump on Dec. 3: “Whatever they have, we’d certainly release. No problem.”

This frames the issue as political strategy -- a game to win or lose --- but it's really about power and whether Trump sending National Guard is legal. Headline writers take note.

Whether you support DEI or not, the caving of private companies is among the greatest collective acts of cowardice in recent times. Especially galling when media companies, like Gannett, which should defend free speech, self-censor out of self-interest. www.niemanlab.org/2025/04/gann...

niemanlab.orgGannett will stop publishing diversity information, citing Trump’s executive orderThe company also removed mentions of "diversity" from its corporate site.

What if a social media platform were owned by a billionaire head of a country who was using his platform to propagandize the platform's users in support of his plan to use military force to invade other countries. Would we also make a law to force divestment?

You are up to date.
