I am of fairly average height for a male adult. Last Friday I was almost run over by a truck turning and ignoring pedestrians on the crosswalk—my head was only slightly peeking over the top of the grille. Motorists routinely break traffic laws at Franklin x Roberson. @chapelhillgov.bsky.social
This will completely ruin the courses of the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, DC Half, and the Marine Corps Marathon—the nation’s largest amateur-only marathon—specifically the Blue Mile part of the course that honors military members who have given their lives in service.
This design appears to completely eliminate the much-beloved loop road and public park at Hains Point, and cut down the cherry trees which line the road. The park is a public space used by tens of thousands of Washingtonians and heavily visited by tourists. /photos not my own.
My review of Thant Myint-U's Peacemaker: U Thant and the Forgotten Quest for a Just World is now out in @globalsixties.bsky.social. Big thanks to @skmiles.bsky.social for inviting me to review such an important book. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

The written version of my Bernath Lecture is now available! Read on to learn more about the intersection of war, human rights, humanitarianism, NGOs, and moral authority! You'll also get sneak peak of the subject of my current in-progress biography, Ginetta Sagan. academic.oup.com/dh/advance-a...
Thought provoking piece and definitely makes me want to read the book. I might quibble though on the claim here that architects of the postwar order were not visionaries—they were very much aware of the contradictions in advocating for internationalism while reifying these territorial nation-states.
The historian Jon Wilson is on the @ippr.org Progressive Review substack today, talking about the apparent crisis of the nation state, bad history, and fragmented politics: progressivereview.substack.com/p/bad-histor...
Gave my favorite lecture today: Death of Stalin to Khrushchev Secret Speech to the Kitchen Debate. Students found Nikita Sergeyevich most entertaining even with the competing aura of Nixon in this era of renewed Nixon-Maxxing. They really do not make statesmen like Khrushchev anymore.
okay Croatia's up but I really do have to go now, please tell me if someone jumps up on that rostrum and starts pounding it with a shoe
Apropos nothing, definitely not a threat made by a head of state at the UNGA today, but here is the first line of the UN Charter: "we the people of the United Nations determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind."

Konrad Jarausch passed earlier this month. He was an extraordinary scholar of mod. Germany. I was on many diss. committees with him, and I greatly respected his intellect and his keen insight into helping students progress. UNC is lesser without him. obits.endswellfuneralhome.com/konrad-jarau...
When I decided to come to Carolina first wanting to do something related to German history, one of the reasons I chose to do so was Konrad Jarausch. He was the ideal example of a great scholar and an even better man. He will be missed—may his memory be a blessing. dailytarheel.com/480137/unive...
As baffling and enraging as this absurd war on bike lanes is, it is always worth remembering that this is not just a US story. The transnational right has an obsession with eliminating bike lanes and endangering as many cyclists (and pedestrians) as possible. See also: Berlin CDU, Ontario Tories...
This is why we have to take seriously the liberal part of liberal empire and liberal internationalism. If you hate liberalism then you would also hate this version of empire and internationalism. Many people who study this often refuse to take liberalism seriously (or hate it themselves.)
I am finding the weird Republicans/The American Right Don't Actually Care About Empire arc bizarre. I really really would have put being a great imperial power as something that wasn't fake to them, a value they actually held where it being sacrificed would cause very significant discontent.
Proof that SHAFR Summer Institute alumni are very cool: Holly Harris (SMU) in the @inquirer.com on the many levers of diplomacy and pressure—short of war—that the US has historically used with Iran to much more effective results. @shafrhistorians.bsky.social www.inquirer.com/news/nation-...
To do an AI production of Wagner in Bayreuth of all places… there really are no limits to the arrogance/ignorance/sheer disrespect of AI evangelists. From the stalls to the balcony, we are going to win.
An experiment with artificial intelligence at the annual Richard Wagner festival in the German town of Bayreuth has drawn boos from the audience after producing a staging that appeared to leave some spectators confused.

The IOC pretending that this was over the Russian NOC operating in occupied territories is absurd. If that was the case then Russia would have been banned since 2014. We all know where the international community drew the line and the IOC followed. Now the IOC is bowing to powerful reactionaries.
The International Olympic Committee announces that it has provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee which had been in effect since October 2023.
