hot tip - recently discovered if you are used to appending "reddit" to your google search, there's a better way. Just add "&udm=18" to the URL. This will trigger the Google "Forum" search, which finds many lesser known goldmines of real people talking about stuff.

did a self guided walking tour in Saigon using The Quiet American by Graham Greene as the basis here are some pictures of then vs now 1-2. Hotel Continental. Popular hang out spot for politicians/journalists. Right next to the Opera House. 3-4. Saigon Palace (renamed to Hotel Grand)

Another interesting bit — the Dong Khoi street used to be known as “Rue Catinat”. I keep noticing the coffee chain “Katinat” around Vietnam. Maybe it’s named after this street? (Which in turn is named after a French general) Anyway, here’s a Katinat branch on the former Rue Catinat!

in the last 6 months, I: - started strength training - traveled to Europe twice - lived on the Canary Islands for a month - made friends who completely changed how I interact with the world - learned to embrace & appreciate my body; confidence went up, & it’s a self fulfilling cycle (1/n)

- started wearing contacts (thought I never would) - as a result bought my first pair of sunglasses - figured out a skin care routine which resulted in visible improvements to - embraced my short hair, receding hairline (after years of long hair), & the stray white hair creeping up (3/n)

- drove a car in Spain - saw a volcano - jumped off some cliffs - hiked to a cave rave - got into d&b music & finally broke out of my long rap spell (4/n)

- figured out travel with a 2-bag carry-on only setup - improved my strength from 1 pull-up to 5 (!!), 2 pushups to 10, (even after gaps) - ate well, lost a few more kilos (down from 80kg last year to 68kg now) (2/n)

If someone would’ve asked me 10 days ago, I wouldn’t have thought this was possible. I have learned that it comes down to endurance, not speed. Speed may come later, but first I need to go steady and be consistent!

Burned out after 5 years, I took a 6-month sabbatical & lived in a house on the beach, learning to cook. Worked for another startup, took another sabbatical, and now I freelance!

A bit of a background: after studying computer science for 4 years, I decided to start my career in design 🙃 Got lucky, joined an early stage startup, and ended up working on all kinds of stuff. Learned to code on the job!

I write these little “notes” on my own site Thinking out loud.. could my site just be a read-only bsky client, and then whatever I post here can just show up there as a “note”? Like a microblog with multiple frontends! 🤯

when Twitter went to crap (RIP), I was literally sad that I wouldn’t be able to build tools for it. Bluesky is full of possibilities 🤩

jobhuntin' goblin@goblinodds.bsky.social

just realized the possibility that bluesky wont be hostile to devs trying to build tools <_<

You are up to date.
