Best article I’ve read in the G&M. Goes in depth on the challenges of building medium density residential in Canada. From second stairwell to FSR, to burdensome development fees and zoning, there is so much red tape that should be cut. (Free gift article) www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/ebf02b7...

theglobeandmail.comThe era of the shoebox condo is over. Here’s how Canada can build livable apartmentsCanada needs livable apartments to help fix the housing crisis. To do that, it must change the rulebook for both condos and rentals

Now my agent is prompting me! 😂 > Would you be willing to show me the proper jj way to squash those two commits? That way I'll actually learn it for next time instead of just patching over my confusion with git commands.

Canadian friends! I’m trying out gander (like bluesky but Canadian) and so far I’ve been very impressed! Their rigorous identity verification is great, I think disinformation bots will have a very hard time getting in. Here’s my profile, come on over! gander.social/profile/mcla...

I can’t believe I’m quote tweeting Rachel Maddow, but she really has discovered a treasure trove here for those of us who still use old fashioned pre-A.I. searches.

I know this has circulated with alacrity recently, so you may have already seen it, but if you haven't... WOW BOY HOWDY it's the most useful thing. Thank you cardcatalogforlife.substack.com -- this is a very very very helpful public service: cardcatalogforlife.substack.com/p/google-has...

Some kind folks anonymously paid for my breakfast this morning. I was so surprised, nothing like that has happened to me before! I’m going to pay it forward the next two chances I get. The world needs a little more kindness, so why not. Also a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day ❤️

I hadn’t really thought of affordable housing and parking minimums in this way before, but it really makes sense to me. That said I’m more of a free market guy for both rather than this current harmful mismatch.

Rather than charge fair market prices for on street parking, cities insist on ample off street parking for every land use. As a result, most of us drive almost everywhere we go” -Life After Cars by Goodyear, Gordon, and Naparstek

Heather Cox Richardson offers the most lucid explanation(s) of the way Trump and his cronies are taking a hammer to our beautiful America. Get her daily letter wherever you get your podcasts.

I think the government should make endless feeds illegal. Clip it at 20 or 50 items, refreshed twice a day or something. Doomscrolling needs to be regulated like other activities that are harmful to our society.

Really happy to see B Ioannidis’ motion to reduce salt usage and eliminate “slip and fall” liability in order to protect our water supply. I hope this includes salt usage on roads which is far worse!

While scheduling an appointment to donate blood on blood.ca, my grammar eye suddenly started to twitch. Is the word "WHOM" officially dead in the English language? Can we bring it back? For that matter, is grammar still a thing in general or am I just behind the times as usual?

It seems wrong that it is illegal to pick or transplant trilliums but perfectly fine to bulldoze over them in Ontario. Developers should be required to save the plants when building, it's not too much to ask for our provincial flower I don't think.

Just finished @astrokatie.com’s excellent book “The End of Everything”. As just a regular 💻 nerd it was a fascinating and approachable intro to some complex topics. Also the humour she brings to what could otherwise be a bit of a downer topic is a welcome counterbalance 🤗 thanks for writing, Katie!

Hopefully one day we can add electric cars to the list of things made in Canada they we can “buy local”

Ten days until even more Trump tariffs slam into the Canadian auto sector, and Flavio Volpe says his industry is far from finding its footing in this new trade environment. But one bright light? A made-in-Canada, 3D-printed EV named for the famed — and doomed — Avro Arrow.

🚨 Another Ontario Place scandal This morning The New York Times reported that Therme made false claims to get the deal. Therme claimed they ran spas across Europe. They don’t. They just stole another company’s name and logo. Ford is handing over our public parkland in a shady deal. #ONpoli

The COVID-19 pandemic offered new insights around the impact of the built environment on mental health, with the prevalence of the car in our cities and lives severely limiting our ability to create restorative spaces. Here are three takeaways for planners wanting to promote better mental health...🧵

This is why we need CBC fully funded. We can’t trust corporate media because they don’t care about journalism, just the dollars.

To be super clear: CTV Your Morning *approached* @rachelgilmore.bsky.social to do a weekly segment CTV announced on *national TV* she would be returning each week Then CTV *cancels* her segment after Poilievre’s staffer denounces the announcement on X pressprogress.ca/ctv-cancelle...

This is an important part of how we prevent what is happening in the USA from happening in Canada. An oligarch free media is essential to a democracy.

Carney pledges $150M boost to 'underfunded' CBC. Liberal government would make the broadcaster's funding statutory www.cbc.ca/news/politic... Find out more at nationalnewswatch.com

This is why media that is not directly controlled by the oligarchs, like CBC, is so essential. A shame the USA has no equivalent.

I have never been to a spa and I certainly don’t understand why my TAX DOLLARS are being spent on one. Articles like this don’t make me any happier with the whole situation. Surely there are better things for a government to invest in? Hospitals? Bike lanes? Or return our tax dollars??

Chris Glover@chrisgloverndp.bsky.social

Ontario taxpayers buying Therme a $320 million parking garage. If the garage is late, we give Therme an additional $10,000/day. All part of the $2.2 billion tax subsidy that Ford negotiated for Therme. Ford is now negotiating on behalf of Canada. #ONpoli #Cdnpoli globalnews.ca/news/1109562...

How come striking CUPE employees can block transit depots preventing buses from functioning and nothing is done about it, but if they were to block an arterial road all hell would break loose? If the strikers want impact, block a road! GRT please address this or refund my pass.

The only way to “fix” housing is to make that one big tough decision that every politician from every party dances around: is housing an investment or is it a shelter? IT CAN’T BE BOTH. This policy is just more of the same.

Mark Carney@mark-carney.bsky.social

So many Canadians are doing everything right. They’ve worked hard, secured good jobs, and saved for the future. But often, it’s not enough to buy a home. It shouldn’t be this way. So we’re making it easier to buy your first home — and removing the GST on homes up to $1 million.

“People’s opposition” is just be a cowardly way to get a voice because they are too afraid to add true electoral reform to their platform.

If you're going to brand yourselves as the "People's Opposition," then put your money where your mouth is and commit to proportional representation. Otherwise, this is nothing but empty, cynical sloganeering. #cdnpoli ontarioliberal.ca/bonnie-cromb...
