In light of the emerging PHP vulnerabilities, I’m happy to report that I took voluntary redundancy from my web dev job 3 months ago and I don’t give a monkeys.

I grew up in the ’70s and had no childhood dreams. I became a teen in the early ‘80s and had no idea what I wanted to be or do, apart from hope to not live through a nuclear holocaust or climate catastrophe.

I would have been an astronaut

I’m now 58 and still don’t know what to be or do, except not be someone who regrets wasting their life rotting in front of a computer for most of the past 30 years. At least there’s not been a nuclear holocaust or climate catastrophe… Oh.

UNITY SPORK The game engine with two functions! 1. Create derisory derivative low-effort slop! 2. Destroy the environment and your credibility! #gamedev #indiegames #fuckAI

I’ve done little this past month except play single-player #videogames - I’ve completed twice as many in that time than I had in the previous 18 months. Focusing on my PS4 backlog helped, as did ignoring my post-employment woes and #gamedev struggles. I feel less anxious than I have in years.

The game I just completed, Dreamfall Chapters (2017), features a minor character who is a slimy nationalist bigot, who harps on about cleansing the homeland of magical people & undesirables & immigrants, and wants your vote to protect ‘our’ women & children. He looks uncannily like Nigel #Farage

In a related post to my previous one about the new Silent Hill, this #indiegame set in a depressingly awful housing estate looks like a lot of joyriding fun. I hope they keep the janky OTT car physics.

This small-scale (Bully-scale) open world indie crime sim game takes place in a rundown 90's housing estate in Northern England! THE ESTATE has no Steam page yet, but you can follow development here! linktr.ee/ctrlsway by indie dev Ctrlsway #gaming

Hey @netflix.com - it’s okay, I don’t need you to ‘deliver even more value for my membership’ and offer 85 new releases next month, as you already have more shows & films than I could watch in my entire lifetime. So there’s no need to increase my ’includes ads’ plan fee by 33%. #enshittification

I’ve been so down-in-the-dumps of late and grumpy about everything, including this little one’s annoying shenanigans, but having her curl up on me like this at the end of a crappy #caturday makes things not seem so terrible.

I've never had any interest in playing any Silent Hill game until I saw this. It looks like where I live. Getting by in a town like this is the real survival horror. #Sheffield #videogames #depression

Andy Kelly@ultrabrilliant.xyz

It's really refreshing seeing shitey normal working class life depicted like this in a game, and a Silent Hill game no less. Pebble-dashed council flats, three-bar fires, Post Office counters, concrete shopping precincts. This must be how posh people felt playing Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.

This is a good visual metaphor for #gamedev using generative AI to code… it gives the illusion of competency and creativity without an understanding of what the hell is going on.

somebody is gonna yell at me for sharing slop and i’m so sorry. but i just got this AI ad for a network install company on tiktok. flawless work, definitely the firm to hire. cc @tracketpacer.com

See this? I want the opposite of it. I would buy a Switch 2 if they offered it as a screenless brick you plug into a TV. Just a regular game console with a regular gamepad. Charge me £269 instead of £419 and I’ll buy all the games. I’m too old to be squinting at handhelds with fiddly controls.

This little shit drew blood yesterday, after I tried to close the blind to block her view of the local cow cat that bullies her for encroaching on it‘s territory. She won’t listen to me when I tell her it was here first and she should just stay out of its way and ignore it. #caturday

Tomb Raider (1996): Lara runs! Lara jumps! Lara climbs! Lara shoots! Lara pisses off dinosaurs! Lara raids tombs! Tomb Raider (2027): Lara doomscrolls recipe websites full of pointless waffle, ads, mailing list popups, erroneous AI summaries, etc etc etc. #gamedev #enshitification #indiegames

yeah sure whatever, let lara croft cook potato stew on her phone for 2m0s of damage resistance who gives a shit anymore

I’ve had to make some very difficult choices about my personal life & career this year. I turned to #gamedev again to help with a creative outlet but I just can’t decide what to do. So I’ve been distracting myself with video games, because they are fun & cool & choices really don’t matter… Oh no.

That GIF is a good depiction of me and my mental health after taking voluntary redundancy in July, thinking I might chill out for a month and do a bit of #gamedev

This post is unavailable.

I’m too tired to do it myself, so here is my cat screaming into the abyss on my behalf. #caturday

Same. Going to take up painting again, and do some mentoring and care work, I think. As for my #gamedev hobby… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Freya Holmér@freya.bsky.social

this wave of AI has legitimately killed a huge part of what I loved about seeing stuff online, what I loved about being an educator, and what I loved about sharing my own work I just don't feel like doing it anymore

I challenge anyone to watch this documentary entirely constructed of archival footage and not feel any or all of the following things: 1. sick to the stomach with anger 2. a barely controllable need to weep 3. a desire to commit an act of homicidal vengeance on behalf of the planet

netflix.comWatch The White House Effect | Netflix Official SiteWarnings about climate change divide George H.W. Bush's White House at a pivotal moment for the planet in this documentary told through archival footage.

I‘ve wanted to get on with #gamedev but I haven’t finished my online #ADHD assessment, so I spent 2 hours completing the last & longest of the 12 multi-section online forms… and the site crashed, logged me out, and I lost everything that I wrote. WHY DID IT NOT SAVE AS IT WENT? I HAVE ADHD FFS!!!

It’s one week since I left my job and I’ve already had one mental breakdown from lack of sleep and an inability to #gamedev, so I’ve decided to give up the following: - alcohol - caffeine - prescription meds - social media - society - food - water - air I might still play #indiegames though.

It’s the #caturday after I officially finished my university creative tech job of 21 years, following taking voluntary severance. I have very mixed feelings. Going to spend the summer meditating, touching grass, maybe doing a little #gamedev, and chillin’ with my Emotional/Wrist Support Cat.

Thought I’d share a post about generative AI / LLMs by the main chap from one of my fave bands. One of the best pieces I’ve read about using such tools to generate ‘art’, and questioning the world view of tech bro fascists and their creativity-devoid champions who *just don’t get it*.

patreon.comWhat is the point of art? | J. Willgoose, Esq. / Public Service BroadcastingDear Listeners, Today, before I head off for a soundcheck for James Borrer's benefit concert, I want to write about something that's been bo

Send help! Within a month I’ve gone from ”I really getting somewhere with #Defold & Lua” to “I’m totally digging #Unity again & maybe C# isn’t all that bad” to “Maybe #Godot is the way forward after all as GDscript is awesome & I wish I had stuck with it.” #gamedev is hard for my aging #ADHD brain.

Honestly, it’s like I’ve learnt nothing since 2020 when I first seriously took up game dev as a hobby and tried out so many different game engines / frameworks and never truly settled on anything in 6 years and never completed anything but the smallest crappiest games.

This makes me so sad, and so angry at the sort of gamers who continually air their grievances in the most unthinking way, no matter how justified their cause. Teeto is awesome, and such #indiegames do not deserve to be the target of this campaign.

VGC@videogameschronicle.com

An indie developer was disappointed to find their PS5 game's trailer flooded with anti-Sony comments over its decision to stop making discs. Teeto's trailer is one of many on the PlayStation YouTube channel getting downvotes and angry comments. www.videogameschronicle.com/news/indie-d...

Teeto just released, and at a great price too, even before the release discount! I’ve been so looking forward to this charming colourful old skool 3D platformer. The demo was great and played well on my Steam Deck, but it deserves the big screen experience. Congratulations to EPG! 🥳🥳🥳

EAT PANT | Shared Custody@eatpantgames.com

🚨Teeto is out now!!🚨 Grab it now on Steam, PS5 & Switch 1/2! It’s been such a crazy journey over the past 2.5 years and we can’t thank you all enough for all the love + support. Help us out by sharing this round so we can let everyone know our 3D platformer is available! #indiegame #gamedev

I don’t know what it says about me that of all the fellow #gamedev stuff I follow, the two #indiegames that I am most looking forward to are a menacing monochrome VHS-pilled shooter set in a brutalist concrete megastructure with impossible geometries and dark shapeshifting entities, and Teeto.

EAT PANT | Shared Custody@eatpantgames.com

My nephews also wanted to be in our upcoming indie game so I let them come up with their own characters and record whatever they like. Introducing the “Sensible Worms”… I have no words… #indiegame #gamedev

What’s interesting to me is that the whole ‘friendslop’ phenomenon is quite possibly spurned on by grown-up former Roblox kids making and playing such fun games in proper engines beyond that horrible janky exploitative platform of end-stage capitalist shite.

Waai Fu (Eiríni/Kaito)@kaisenso.bsky.social

The fact that more people are playing Roblox copies of Meccha Chameleon than the actual game is so emblematic of how Roblox exists primarily as a vector to rip actual creatives off instead of fostering originality. The argument of "but I can't afford the actual game" doesn't sway me.
