I live in a rural town and, like, I don't know how to tell you this, but the girls play on the boys team and vice versa all the time because otherwise we don't have enough players for a game and it's literally always fine so stop being weirdos about kids sports and just let trans kids play.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

This is one of the most heart-breaking & important articles I have ever read - from someone whose voices are so rarely heard, a teenaged girl. If you want to understand online misogyny in all its devastating impact, please read this shattering piece. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

theguardian.comI am a 15-year-old girl. Let me show you the vile misogyny that confronts me on social media every day | AnonymousObjectification, hate, rape threats: the politicians debating online abuse mean well, but to truly understand, they need to see what I see

A way I am (apparently?) weirdly wired is I can't imagine having the patience to be corresponding with some schmuck with an island. Even if I knew no details. I legit can't conceive *wanting* to trade note after note with some boring-ass fauxvocative dipshit who can't spell.

These people are depraved. But also needy in a manner truly soft. The former brings revulsion, but I find myself full of contempt for the latter as well. Not bragging. I know obliviousness gets me invited to fewer things, good things. But I suspect I deal with fewer uninteresting fuckheads, too.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.” That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

First of all, good for her for calmly standing her ground and ignoring all the empty threats -- "we're gonna put you in the car and ID you!" -- until these goons give up and slink away. Second, the irony of masked agents of the state with no name plates demanding *other* people identify themselves?

This woman is harder than goddamn steel dealing with these goddamn thugs. I want her to be my neighbor.

LOL. Got blocked for asking an LLM pusher to clarify their contention that, by any definition of consciousness, if all people are conscious so too must be every machine. Truly shameful the flimflam people will try to sell us in the course of insisting we must have moar chatbot.

The 14th Amendment was ratified today in 1868—guaranteeing equal protection under the law. 157 years later, Trump’s trying to erase it like it was a typo. No birthright citizenship. No due process. Just Trump doing what he does best—breaking the law.

Raise a glass.

Happy Hitler Shoots Himself In The Head day to all who celebrate. The 80th anniversary. May his ignominious end, with his body doused in petrol and burned by his last remaining loyalists, be a model for all tyrants.

Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses Grant at the Appomattox Court House on this day 160 years ago. I am thankful for Lee. His mediocrity as a general and arrogance as a strategist were of enormous benefit to the Union. I encourage all to shit on his grave if the opportunity is ever presented.

Our access media should reckon with the fact that the president is very suggestible, and they play an active role in creating his fixations. His behavior is on him, but his enthusiastic selling of US citizens to foreign slave prisons will be in part bc he was goaded into it by this sort of thing.

Trump says he wants to send Americans to gulags in El Salvador: "I love that. If we could take some of our 20 time wiseguys that push people into subways ... if he would take them, I would be honored to give them. I don't know what the law says on that ... I'm all for it."

Seen enough of Howard Lutnick, thank you! No more of that guy is needed at this time. If I need some more I will simply go to Oyster Bay, find the most expensive restaurant, and look for the person who is being the most obnoxious to the servers. Do not need additional exposure at this time.

Well-meaning folks ask "why" the techreich seek to destroy biomedical science and patient care. Asking commits one to hearing the answer, which is: public health impedes their rule. We are ill, but not ill enough to maximize their power over us. So we must suffer. That is the whole sum of it.

Booker is modeling a generous patriotism, condemning the indefensible, but giving offramps to those in thrall of evil. It will not change votes. But! What he is doing is essential. It is a ghostlight, stubbornly illuminating the space where civic ethics lived, and will yet live again.

one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

I'd like to say my never-Newsom position is simply a moral stance, and it is. But also: we need winners. A person whose judgement has them lighting their credibility on fire for clicks is not a winner. Failing both the moral test and the stench-of-loser-shit test? It's gonna be a no from me.

This all day. Show some spine and win, or don't and lose.

As a cishet dude, when I see a Dem ditch trans rights, it sends a message: you ain't got no fight in you, no principles, just another empty suit. Think I'm some too-online outlier? Go ask your expensive consultants why people don't bother to vote. It's because they know you're all empty suits.

No, Jim, look: I don't want Tim Curry, or even Gary Cole doing Lumbergh. Get me the dampest, smarmiest, limpest pantload of an empty suit, where the slightest glimpse of his pasty visage tells you he is terminally full of shit, and if he says it's sunny out you pack a fucking poncho and galoshes.

This is 100% bullshit. There are no algorithms. Musk and his incel clown posse are not forensic accountants and do not know how to audit. Discovering fraud is a labor-intensive project that can never be done by looking at payments alone. This is just a thinly-veiled rationale to gut Social Security.

Specific circumstances and wording aside, the thrust of this point is inarguable. It's a disaster to conceptualize one's vote as a sop to be thrown to the politician that 'earns it' most theatrically. In fact it is a duty, to be undertaken with the goal of maximizing good and minimizing suffering.
