Here are the last three #monarchs released for the year. It's pretty cold, so I hope they make it. Next year we hope to tag them!

It's supposed to get down to 2 degrees Celsius overnight so we moved the remaining caterpillars and 17 chysalids over to the small enclosure. The plan? Outside in the day time, inside at night and any days where the weather is butts. Gotta help the #monarchs. 🦋

The Monarch butterfly migration is one of the longest-known, multi-generational insect migrations on our planet. Every fourth generation lives 8 times longer than the previous generations and travels 10 times farther.

Called it! 3 new #monarch friends! 🦋 We also found this late bloomer who, if the weather gets too cold, if there's a frost warning, etc., may end up coming inside with us while they are in they're chrysalis.

Well, this was a terrible decision. 47% of my recommended daily intake of sodium in a single portion. And it tastes terrible! I'm not sure what I was expecting. I'm eating nothing but lettuce for the rest of the day and can be found sucking water directly from the tap.

Hello pretty lady or handsome fella. I'm not sure which, since I'm stuck at work and can't check your wings. Anywho, now that the first #monarch has finally said hello, we should be releasing them almost daily pretty soon. 🦋

It's butterfly eve! Maybe. On the right is a green one that isn't ready yet. On the right is a black one, which means it's just about done. If all goes well, we should say hello to the first #monarch of the year! 🦋

It just dawned on me that listening to Once Upon A Christmas with Kenny and Dolly is gonna feel different this year...

Our latest count is at least 42 monarchs in the enclosure, either as a larvae (caterpillar) or pupa (chrysalis). We won't be close to reaching the 88 butterflies we released last year, but this is more than I thought we had. Pictures to follow soon. 🦋

Finally! We were starting to get worried that something was killing our #monarch caterpillars because we couldn't find the little buggers after moving the eggs to the enclosure. There's no chance of us even coming close to last year's 88 monarchs released. It has been a weird summer here. 🦋

We moved the first caterpillar of this year from the open garden to the enclosure this morning and had another visitor come by while the enclosure was open. This dude is having a little snack so no eggs, but we're still happy they stopped by. 🦋

It was on this day last year that the first monarch butterfly of the year visited our yard and kicked off a summer that would end with 88 butterflies released. This year... I'm still waiting. 🦋 We had a new birdie visitor though - an American Redstart. Welcome to the backyard, friend!

We did the easy part. Now it's up to nature to do the heavy lifting. Our garden is ready for the year with milkweed in the back, some bee balm in the middle and a sedum in the front right. All yummy stuff for the monarchs! 🦋

Chateau Papillon is ready for the year! We've already seen three monarchs, which seems early for our neck of the woods. The only problem is that two of the largest plants inside the butterfly house didn't come up this year, so we'll need to move some from the open garden. 🦋

Let's gooooo! The milkweed plants in the butterfly house that we thought were dead have started to come up! Thank you Internet, for telling me to wait until June before panicking. Even though this will be our 4th year raising monarchs, there's always something to learn.

So perhaps it wasn't the monarchs that we saw earlier. These sneaky painted ladies look like monarchs from far away but I managed to snap one when it landed on the garage this morning. 🦋

The orange man baby is going to read scripture after bashing the Pope? Cool. 2 Chronicles 7:11-22? Cool. Verse 14 - "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face..." $5 bucks says the self aggrandizing oaf thinks someone wrote this about him.

Temps were in the double digits for the first time this year so I raked the whole back yard, prepped the butterfly house (!!!) and put out the deck furniture. We also had our first barbecue of the year after finding this fella for the garden He'll look even better once it starts to bloom again.

Canada outplayed the US in every facet of the game except for the one that utimately matters - goals. Still proud of 'em. ❤🇨🇦 ❤️

Some stand outs from this year's batch of decorated sugar cookies. Stranger Things' Steve 'The Hair' Harrington in his Scoops Ahoy! outfit. Hermes the elf from the old Rudolf Red Nosed Reindeer stop motion. Mr. Narwhal from Elf with Will Farrell. Raphael from TMNT.

#Monarch update: 86 released this year with 2 more left to hatch/eclose. I harvested this year's seed pods and... Well, it's a LOT. 10oz coffee mug for reference. Since we don't have anymore space, we're going to scatter them along a walking trail this fall so they will germinate in the spring.

Why does applying for a job online feel like posting a profile on a dating site? You tell randos about yourself and talk yourself up to make you as attractive as possible, all in the hope that they'll swipe right.

#Monarch update: 72 released so far, with 15 remaining. It got down to 2 degrees Celsius last night and after releasing 5 more this morning with a frost warning for tonight, we decided to move them inside. Will they make it to Mexico? Who knows, but we'll give them the best chance possible.

#Monarch update: 57 released as of this morning and 2 more just hatched for release tomorrow. There are still 23 chrysalids left to hatch and somehow I missed the last chonky caterpillar still munching away. Our 1st year we released 7, then 13 our 2nd year. Not a bad improvement for our 3rd year!

#Monarch update: we released 4 more butterflies this morning and 3 more hatched while we were out. Since it's late summer, some leaves are looking iffy so I plucked any with chrysalids on them and hung them up. If my math is right, that should give us 69 released this year. Nice!

#Monarch update: there is no update! This is our 2nd day without any new butterflies but a bunch should be ready to say hello soon. There are still a few chonkers that aren't quiet ready to be butterflies but should be in the next couple of days.
