K 1.144, T.-S. K21.95.T, and T.-S. K21.95. are generally thought to have been pages from the same work, the rest of which is lost. They are the same hand, the same size, and similar content — largely Hekhalot-era pseudepigraphal and magical texts. While these fragments first caught my eye due to their record of one of the earliest known Hebrew texts of the apocryphal Prayer of Manasseh (to be uploaded in the future), they also include several fascinating magical texts and apocryphal prayers which are worth studying in their own rite. This text, a short prayer attributed to Abraham, features much language in common with the Ḳaddish and the Yishtabaḥ.

It is celebrated across the United States on the second Monday in October, and is an official city and state holiday in various localities. Indigenous Peoples’ Day began as a counter-celebration to the US Columbus Day honoring the 15th century Italian explorer Christopher Columbus (1451-1506). Many rejected the premise of Columbus Day arguing that it represents “the violent history of the colonization in the Western Hemisphere” and that it sanitizes Christopher Columbus’ own actions such as enslaving the Taíno People of the Caribbean. Indigenous Peoples’ Day was first instituted in Berkeley, California, in 1992, to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Two years later, Santa Cruz, California, instituted the day in their civil calendar. Starting in 2014, many other cities and states adopted it. On Shemini Atseret, the Tefilat Geshem (prayer for rain) is offered for the fertility of all life on Earth and the resulting health of all peoples. (On the other side of the Jewish calendar, the Prayer for Dew is offered on Pesaḥ before the dry season in the northern hemisphere and Erets Yisrael.) Literally, Shemini Atseret means the “Eighth [day] of Assembly”, but given that both Shemini Atseret and the seventh final day of Pesaḥ are described as atseret in the Torah, the name is taken to mean “the closing festival” at the conclusion of each of these week long festivals. The origin of Ḥanukkah underscores the significance of these festivals. During the Seleucid Greek occupation of Jerusalem in the 160s BCE, Sukkot and Shemini Atseret could not properly be celebrated in the second Temple. As a result, when the Temple was retaken by the Maccabees after the rainy season had already begun, the festival of Ḥanukkah was born with many of Sukkot and Shemini Atseret’s rain-oriented ritual symbolism transformed to that of light. Co-incident with Shemini Atseret is the festival of the completion of the Torah, Simḥat Torah. In the Diaspora, Shemin Atseret is a two day festival and, outside the bounds of the historic land of Israel, Simḥat Torah is celebrated on the second day of the yom tov for Shemini Atseret. In many Ashkenazi communities today, these are (excepting Ma'ariv and Ne'ilah) skipped on account of time. But this has always felt like a great shame to me, because seliḥot are, in a sense, the theological and liturgical core of the Yom Kippur practice. So a while back I made a bunch of spreadsheets to compare all the attested Yom Kippur seliḥot rites as listed in Goldschmidt's maḥzor, and designed an abbreviated cycle of seliḥot for Shaḥarit, Musaf, and Minḥah. Each cycle features two regular seliḥot, one 'aqedah (a retelling of the binding of Isaac), and one pizmon (a final seliḥah with a repeated refrain, sung communally), for a total of four seliḥot and five repetitions of the thirteen attributes. This is the first result of this process, for Shaḥarit. Musaf and Minḥah selections will arrive eventually, albeit probably not this year.

Scholarly opinion about the date of its composition is divided. Adolf Jellinek thought it was likely authored during the time of the Crusades, while Heinrich Graetz thought it was likely composed in the mid-8th century. The visions described in the secrets portrays the Yishmaelites being led by a violent saviour of the Jews from the hegemony of the Byzantine Empire. It describes the events and rulers of the eighth-century Umayyad Empire, as well as eight-century battles between the Byzantines (known in the text as the Kenites or the Kingdom of Edom) and the Umayyads (known in it as the Kingdom of Yishmael).
